Sustainable Business Strategies for Local Fashion Communities (small and medium scale enterprises) in Ethiopia and Ukraine

Khurana, Karan,Ryabchykova, Kateryna The Society of Fashion and Textile Industry 2018 한국의류산업학회지 Vol.20 No.1

The aim of the research study is to carve sustainable business strategies for the fashion communities in Ethiopia and Ukraine which are suffering today due to ever-increasing share of fast fashion consumerism. Fashion houses and international brands propagandize sustainability and consumption for better consumer base, where as originally sustainable local-based craftsmen still stay in the shade. Four communities/local designers are selected from the countries through the method of purposive sampling. Qualitative analysis is the basis of the research as we performed personal interviews and in-depth analysis of the communities to diagnose the problems and subsequently devise the solutions. In this research, we have studied and analyzed the problems faced by hereditary communities and ethnic designers in small and medium scale enterprise sector from two emerging economies. After the grounding the difficulties faced we advised strategies for sustainable future growth to the companies. The current academic literature on small and medium scale enterprises highlights the problems and solutions for general industry sectors. This paper brings attention to fashion communities and designers who promote national heritage and are struggling to survive in emerging economies due to industrialization and globalization. Moreover the comparison of the two geographies is unique in nature.

      • Silencing of HSulf-2 expression in MCF10DCIS.com cells attenuate ductal carcinoma in situ progression to invasive ductal carcinoma <i>in vivo</i>

        Khurana, Ashwani,McKean, Hiedi,Kim, Hyunseok,Kim, Sung-Hoon,Mcguire, Jacie,Roberts, Lewis R,Goetz, Matthew P,Shridhar, Viji BioMed Central 2012 Breast cancer research Vol.14 No.2

<P><B>Introduction</B></P><P>Ductal carcinoma <I>in situ </I>(DCIS) of the breast is a heterogeneous group of proliferative cellular lesions that have the potential to become invasive. Very little is known about the molecular alterations involved in the progression from DCIS to invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). Heparan endosulfatase (HSulf-2) edits sulfate moieties on heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) and has been implicated in modulating heparin binding growth factor signaling, angiogenesis and tumorigenesis. However, the role of HSulf-2 in breast cancer progression is poorly understood. MCF10DCIS.com cells (referred as MCF10DCIS) express HSulf-2 and form comedo type DCIS and progress to IDC when transplanted in immune-deficient mice and, therefore, is an ideal model to study breast cancer progression. We evaluated the role of HSulf-2 in progression from DCIS to IDC using mouse fat pad mammary xenografts.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Non-target control (NTC) and HSulf-2 knockdown in MCF10DCIS breast cancer cells were achieved by NTC shRNA and two different lentiviral shRNA against HSulf-2 respectively. Xenografts were established by injecting NTC and HSulf-2 deficient MCF10DCIS cells in mouse mammary fat pads. Xenografts were subjected to H&E staining for morphological analysis, TUNEL and Propidium iodide staining (to determine the extent of apoptosis), Western blot analysis and zymography.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Using a mouse mammary fat pad derived xenograft model, we observed that compared to control treated xenografts, down-regulation of HSulf-2 was associated with significant delays in growth at Week 7 (<I>P-</I>value < 0.05). Histological examination of the tumors demonstrated substantial differences in comedo necrosis, with marked luminal apoptosis and up-regulation of apoptotic markers Bim, cleaved PARP and cleaved caspase 3 in HSulf-2 depleted xenografts. Furthermore, HSulf-2 depleted xenografts retained the basement membrane integrity with decreased activity and expression of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), an enzyme critical for degradation of extracellular matrix compared to nontargeted control.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Our data suggest that HSulf-2 expression may be critical for human breast cancer progression. Down-regulation of HSulf-2 leads to retention of comedo type DCIS and delays the progression of DCIS to IDC. Further studies are necessary to determine if therapeutic targeting of HSulf-2 expression might delay the progression of DCIS to IDC.</P>

        Lifting Idempotents and Projective Covers

Dinesh Khurana ...et al KYUNGPOOK UNIVERSITY 2001 Kyungpook mathematical journal Vol.41 No.2

A necessary and sufficient condition is given so that direct summands of a module, with projective cover, have projective covers. We characterize the rings over which direct summands of cyclic (respectively finitely generated) modules, with projective covers, have projective covers. Some sufficient conditions are given so that direct summands of arbitrary modules, with projective covers, have projective covers. Let L be a left ideal of a ring R. It is said that idempotents lift modulo L in R if for every X ∈ R with x² - x ∈ L there exists an idempotent e in R such that e - x ∈ L. It is proved that if idempotents lift modulo the Jacobson radical of a ring, then idempotents also lift modulo every one sided ideal contained in the Jacobson radical. Let I be an ideal of a ring R. We prove that if idempotents lift in R modulo every left ideal contained in I then, idempotents also lift in R modulo every right ideal contained in I. On taking I = R we get that left exchange rings are right exchange.

Effect of jet diameter on erosion of turgo impulse turbine runner

Sourabh Khurana,Varun 대한기계학회 2014 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.28 No.11

Erosion of hydro turbine components is a complex phenomenon which depends upon different parameters such as silt size, silt concentration, jet velocity, hardness of silt particles, properties of base materials, jet diameter and operating hours of turbine. Several investigationshave studied the effect of these parameters on erosive wear. In the present study an experimental investigation has been carried outon a small scale Turgo Impulse turbine to study the effect of jet diameter, silt size, silt concentration and operating hours of turbine. Samplesof silt were collected from Dehar power house, India. Based on experimental investigation, a correlation has been developed for theestimation of normalized wear of a Turgo impulse turbine runner.

      • SUSTAINABILITY AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT: A CRITICAL REVIEW OF TWO DECADES OF DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FASHION AND TEXTILE BUSINESS

Karan Khurana,Marco Ricchetti 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2015 Global Fashion Management Conference Vol.2015 No.06

Fashion industry pressure on natural resources has grown dramatically as consumption grew in emerging countries and the principle of rapid change of fashions extended to mass market in western counties, at the same time supply chains expanded globally to countries with lower labor and environmental standards creating critical sustainability challenges. Meanwhile, sustainability has become a hot topic for consumers that hold brands responsible for sustainability performances along the whole supply chain. The paper traces developments in the fashion business commitment to sustainability over two decades, with a focus on the implication for SCM. Academic literature focuses mainly on partial issues, missing the overall picture, the interaction among a complex set of factors, and to account for the role of past decisions and mistakes on current SSCM (sustainable supply chain management) strategy developments. The time span considered captures sustainability awareness in the fashion business which is in its statu nascenti (nascent state) and the trial and error process that led to progressive refinements of both means and ends. The paper provides an extensive review of academic articles, business reports, technical documents, regulations and direct information from the field and identifies five key lessons learnt in this process that influence current fashion business strategies in sustainability and SCM.

Negotiating responsibilities and relationships : Power, conflict, and decision-making in households of informal women workers

        Sakshi KHURANA 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2015 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.21 No.3

In the South Asian context, the importance of male protection and provision lead women to comply with, rather than challenge, male dominance. Yet, even as social structures constrain the actions of women more so than those of men, they allow spaces where women can fulfill their own and their families’ needs. Based on case studies of different groups of women engaged in the garment and construction sectors and those who had given up wage work, I argue in this paper that women’s ability to shift power relations at home depended on the kind of paid employment they were engaged in and its social recognition. The agency of women who had given up wage work and those in independent paid employment was shaped by different factors. The differences in their familial and kinship roles, stage-of-life identities, the class position of their households, the ability to mobilize their social networks and access to earnings impacted intra- and extra-household relations and women’s ability to shift these relations.

Effect of Sintering Process with Co3O4 on the Performance of LSCF-Based Cathodes for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Sanchit Khurana,Sean Johnson,Alireza Karimaghaloo,Min Hwan Lee 한국정밀공학회 2018 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.5 No.5

The impact of the sintering process, especially in terms of sintering temperature and sintering aid concentration, on the ohmic transport and electrode performance of (La0.80Sr0.20)0.95CoO3-δ – gadolinia-doped ceria (LSCF-GDC) cathodes is studied. The ohmic and charge-transfer kinetics exhibit a highly coupled Co3O4 concentration dependency, showing the best performances at an optimum range of 4-5 wt%. This is ascribed to small grain sizes and improved connection between particles. The addition of Co3O4 was also found to have a dominant impact on charge-transfer kinetics in the LSCF-GDC composite layer and a moderate impact on the electronic transport in the current-collecting LSCF layer. Care should be taken to avoid a formation of excessive thermal stresses between layers when adding Co3O4.

Artificial Intelligence as a Vehicle for Innovation: Literature Review and Bibliometric Study

Reema Khurana 한국경영정보학회 2022 Asia Pacific Journal of Information Systems Vol.32 No.4

Artificial Intelligence has been a conceptual area for several decades. It has been studied extensively through experiments by the Information Systems community. When Information Systems supported with Information Technology became all pervasive in business and other allied areas, gradually the advancements in Artificial Intelligence also emerged as innovations across domains. Artificial Intelligence by definition is expected to substitute Human Intelligence, thereby making a huge space for innovation. In fact, all processes effected by human intelligence are liable to be replaced by AI which in itself is a massive innovation space. This paper will study the publication’s repository (Scopus and Google Scholar from 1983 till 2021) in the area of Artificial Intelligence and innovation, then analyze the trend to gain insight into the evolution of AI as a vehicle for innovation.
