        Sorting CD4+ T Cells in Blood by Using Magnetic Nanoparticles Coated with Anti-CD4 Antibody

        We used Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) which are coated with antiCD4 monoclonal antibody to bind selectively onto membranes of CD4+ T cells (hereafter antiCD4-MNPs). The antiCD4-MNPs were prepared through direct covalent interaction between the carboxyl group of the antiCD4 antibody and the amino group of amino-modified MNPs. The antiCD4-MNPs were mixed with human blood cells, followed by bursting the red blood cells with hypotonic buffer; then, the antiCD4-MNPs coated cells were separated by using a magnet. We observed the number of cells bound with magnetite clusters and particles. When fluorescence isothiocyanate labeled antiCD4- MNPs was used to observe the CD4+ T cells, the fluorescent intensity was improved by about two times compared to that when cells were labeled with the antiCD4 antibody only. This is a potential method to sort helper CD4+ T cells for observation under conventional microscopes.         Extension of the Inhibitory Effect of Chloramphenicol on Bacteria by Incorporating It into Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanoparticles

        Magnetite Fe$_3$O$_4$ nanoparticles were prepared by using a co-precipitation method, then functionalized by double layers of surfactants (core/oleic acid (OA)/sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)). For application as a drug carrier, the double-layer-coated magnetic nanoparticles were fully loaded with the antibiotic chloramphenicol (Cm) to investigate the effect of the drug release process on the bacteria {\it Escherichia coli} (E. coli). The water-soluble Cm and Cm-coated magnetic nanoparticles (Cm-NPs) (equivalent to 50 $\mu$l of 5 -- 200 $\mu$g/ml Cm) were poured into small holes on agar plates spread with E. coli, after which the plates were incubated overnight. The diameters of the non-bacteria circles were shown to gain their maximal values after 14 h, then to gradually decrease in almost all samples. Nevertheless, the circles created by Cm-NPs were about 1.5 times larger than those for the control Cm. The speed of bacterial lawn re-grown in the case of the Cm-NPs was obviously slower than that of the controlled Cm. We conclude that the magnetic nanoparticles gradually release the antibiotic, thereby maintaining the stability and the effect of the antibiotic longer than that of the conventional water-soluble antibiotic.

        Unstructured Discrete Ordinates Method Based on Radial Basis Function Approximation

        Numerical treatment of the boundary value problem with meshfree methods has been a popular research area in recent years. In the nuclear transport field, several applications of meshfree methods are employed to develop a solution for the neutron diffusion and transport equations. Among the meshfree methods, which based on radial basis function (RBF) approximation exhibits more advantages than others. By applying the RBF approximation, a flexible technique for discretizing the spatial variable of the neutron transport equation is provided without any requirements related to the shape of the unstructured mesh or the number of spatial dimensions. However, use of the RBF approximation without specified constraints on the number of data points used for constructing the approximation function may cause instability in the discrete equation system. In addition, it decreases the accuracy of the numerical solution near the geometric boundary. In this study, a numerical method is developed to solve the discrete ordinates equation (S$_{\rm N}$) on unstructured mesh for neutron transport. Several benchmarks are implemented to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method. Results are compared with analytical and reference results from the standard S$_{\rm N}$ method. The proposed method provides a stable and accurate solution for the transport problem with curved boundaries.

        Contribution to the knowledge of Acaenitinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) from Vietnam, with descriptions of two new species

        Two new species Ishigakia curvicaudicula Pham & Long sp. nov., and Yezoceryx comaensis Pham sp. nov. are described and illustrated. An updated key to 15 known species of Ishigakia of the world fauna is also provided. The new species Yezoceryx comaensis Pham sp. nov. is inserted in a key to the Vietnamese species provided by Pham et al. (2017). In addition, Siphimedia nigriscuta Sheng and Sun, 2010 is recorded for the first time from Vietnam.

        Drynaria bonii spore culture: optimization of culture conditions and analysis of gametophyte and sporophyte development

        Drynaria bonii H. Christ is a medicinal plant that has traditionally been used for the treatment of chronic diseases and tuberculosis. However, D. bonii has not yet been cultivated or propagated. In this study, we optimized the conditions for the spore culture of D. bonii to produce sporophytes. First, we evaluated the efects of various factors, such as temperature, light intensity, potting material, and pH, on spore germination and early gametophyte development. Under optimal culture conditions, 95–99% of the spores germinated within 2 weeks of culture. Next, based on these results, we established a culture system for gametophyte development and sporophyte production. Mature gametophytes frst appeared 5 months post-germination (mpg), and at 12 mpg, the rate of production of heart-shaped gametophytes reached 56.6%. Sporophytes at the early frst-leaf stage frst appeared at 6 mpg, and at 12 mpg, the rate of formation of sporophytes reached 15.4%. Interestingly, 6.3% of all gametophytes produced multiple sporophytes. Additionally, 42–62% of the gametophytes also produced multiple secondary gametophytes, indicating a high potential of D. bonii gametophytes to generate new gametophytes and, subsequently, sporophytes. When transferred to new trays or pots, sporophytes grew well and showed 100% survival. Overall, we conclude that this spore culture system can be successfully used for the propagation of D. bonii sporophytes.

        Exploration of genetic diversity of Bacillus spp. from industrial shrimp ponds in Vietnam by multi-locus sequence typing

        Bacillus is a diverse genus consisting of more than 200 species with extensive genetic diversity. Their beneficial effects in industrial shrimp farming have been well documented. However, little is known about the biodiversity of the Bacillus spp. in this aquaculture system. Taxonomic analysis by 16S rRNA sequencing does not always allow species-level identification of Bacillus spp. In this study, 26 Bacillus isolates from two industrial Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp ponds in Bac Lieu Province, Vietnam, were analyzed for their genetic diversity by multi-locus sequence typing (MLST). A total of 22 sequence types were identified and segregated into four distinct clusters, corresponding to B. subtilis, B. velezensis, B. siamensis, and B. licheniformis. Bacillus subtilis and B. velezensis accounted for more than 73% of the Bacillus isolates. Notably, the MLST scheme exhibited high discriminatory power and might be further simplified to be a convenient method to identify species of the genus Bacillus.
