Velasques, Kelle,Michels, Luana Roberta,Colome, Leticia Marques,Haas, Sandra Elisa Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.3

Background: Excessive exposure to the sun during childhood is strongly associated with the development of skin cancer in the future. The only way to prevent the development of skin cancer is to protect against ultraviolet radiation, which can be achieved through strategic awareness during childhood and adolescence. Objective. The aim of this work was to evaluate the impact of educational activities for rural and urban students to promote the use of sunscreens and prevent skin cancer. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out with students (9-12 years) of rural (n=70) and urban (n=70) schools in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. The educational interventions were lectures and games. The impact of this strategy was evaluated through the application of a questionnaire before and after the interventions. Results: Before the intervention, it was found around 50% of rural and urban students were not aware of the damage caused by sun exposure, often exposing themselves to UV radiation without use sunscreen ( ~ 25 %) and at the most critical times of the day/year. After the lectures we observed an improvement in the behavior of the students with regard to sun exposure and knowledge about skin cancer. Conclusions: The results of this study emphasize the importance of prevention strategies for skin cancer and promoting the use of sunscreens based educational strategies. The interventions were of great value in relation to disseminating knowledge on the subject.

Oxytocin Ameliorates Remote Liver Injury Induced by Renal Ischemia-Reperfusion in Rats

Hekimoglu, Askin Tas,Toprak, Gulten,Akkoc, Hasan,Evliyaoglu, Osman,Ozekinci, Selver,Kelle, Ilker The Korean Society of Pharmacology 2013 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.17 No.2

Renal ischemia-reperfusion (IR) causes remote liver damage. Oxytocin has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the protective function of oxytocin (OT) in remote liver damage triggered by renal IR in rats. Twenty four rats were randomly divided into four different groups, each containing 8 rats. The groups were as follows: (1) Sham operated group; (2) Sham operated+OT group (3) Renal IR group; (4) Renal IR+OT group. OT ($500{\mu}g/kg$) was administered subcutaneously 12 and 24 hours before and immediately after ischemia. At the end of experimental procedure, the rats were sacrificed, and liver specimens were taken for histological assessment or determination of malondialdehyde (MDA), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), paraoxonase (PON-1) activity and nitric oxide (NO). The results showed that renal IR injury constituted a notable elevation in MDA, TOS, Oxidative stress index (OSI) and significantly decreased TAS, PON-1 actvity and NO in liver tissue (p<0.05). Additionally renal IR provoked significant augmentation in hepatic microscopic damage scores. However, alterations in these biochemical and histopathological indices due to IR injury were attenuated by OT treatment (p<0.05). These findings show that OT ameliorates remote liver damage triggered by renal ischemia-reperfusion and this preservation involves suppression of inflammation and regulation of oxidant-antioxidant status.

      • Sol-gel synthesis, computational chemistry, and applications of Cao nanoparticles for the remediation of methyl orange contaminated water

        Nnabuk Okon Eddy,Rajni Garg,Rishav Garg,Samson I. Eze,Emeka Chima Ogoko,Henrietta Ijeoma Kelle,Richard Alexis Ukpe,Raphael Ogbodo,Favour Chijoke Techno-Press 2023 Advances in nano research Vol.15 No.1

Nanoparticles are known for their outstanding properties such as particle size, surface area, optical and electrical properties. These properties have significantly boasted their applications in various surface phenomena. In this work, calcium oxide nanoparticles were synthesized from periwinkle shells as an approach towards waste management through resource recovery. The sol gel method was used for the synthesis. The nanoparticles were characterized using X-Ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier Transformed Infra-Red Spectrophotometer (FTIR), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ultra violet visible spectrophotometer (UV-visible). While DLS and SEM underestimate the particle diameter, the BET analysis reveals surface area of 138.998 m2/g, pore volume = 0.167 m3/g and pore diameter of 2.47 nm. The nanoparticles were also employed as an adsorbent for the purification of dye (methyl orange) contaminated water. The adsorbent showed excellent removal efficiency (up to 97 %) for the dye through the mechanism of physical adsorption. The adsorption of the dye fitted the Langmuir and Temkin models. Analysis of FTIR spectrum after adsorption complemented with computational chemistry modelling to reveal the imine nitrogen group as the site for the adsorption of the dye unto the nanomaterials. The synthesized nanomaterials have an average particle size of 24 nm, showed a unique XRD peak and is thermally and mechanically stable within the investigated temperature range (30 to 70 ℃).

Creating a Culturally Responsive K-3 Science Curriculum: Teachers as Cultural Brokers

Nanette S. Schonleber,Ivy K. Kelling 한국유아교육학회 2018 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Vol.24 No.1

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate and analyze the processes and initial outcomes of a K-3 Hawaiian culture-based science program created collaboratively by five Hawaiian language immersion early childhood teachers, their administrator, and a university professor. Data collection included semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with the five K-3 educators and their administrator, analysis of teacher and student work samples and reflections, and individual classroom observations. Data analysis revealed an increase in science content confidence and self- efficacy in both teaching and learning the sciences. Three emergent themes led to a grounded theory implicating both the importance of ongoing professional development and the use of place-based practices in indigenous education. Suggestions are offered for educators wishing to adapt or create culture-based science programs to increase equity and access to the sciences for diverse young children.

The Effect of Dexpanthenol on Ototoxicity Induced by Cisplatin

        Yuksel Toplu,Emrah Sapmaz,Hakan Parlakpinar,Mehmet Kelles,M. Tayyar Kalcioglu,Kevser Tanbek,Ahmet Kizilay 대한이비인후과학회 2016 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.9 No.1

Objectives. This study was aimed to investigate the protective effects of dexpanthenol (Dxp) on against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. Methods. To examine this effect, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) measurements and serum levels of oxidative and antioxidant status (including malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, total oxidant status, total antioxidant status, and oxidative stress index) were evaluated. Thirty-two adult female Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into 4 equal groups; control (K), cisplatin (C), cisplatin plus Dxp (CD), and Dxp (D). In all groups DPOAEs measurements, between 996 and 10,078 Hz as DPOAEs and input/output functions, were performed on days 0, 1th, 5th, and 12th. Prior to death, the last DPOAEs measurements and blood samples were taken. Results. In the C group, statistically significant differences were detected at all frequencies between 0 and 5 days and 0 and 12 days measurements (P<0.05). Serum level of oxidant and antioxidant status were detected statistically significantly changed in this group versus K group (P<0.05). Contrary to the C group, in the CD group hearing ability was seen largely preserved at many frequencies and serum levels of all biochemical parameters were shifted toward normal values, similar to the K group. No significant differences were detected in the either D or K group’s measurements. Conclusion. According to these results, Dxp may prevent cisplatin-induced ototoxicity.

      • Characteristics Affecting How College Basketball Coaches Advise Their Athletes to Use Imagery

        Lindsay Ross-Stewart,Sandra E. Short,Megan Kelling 한국코칭능력개발원 2014 International Journal of Coaching Science Vol.8 No.2

This study examined personal- and imagery-related characteristics that influenced the degree to which coaches advised their athletes to use imagery. Also included were coaches’ perceptions of the effectiveness and functions of images. Collegiate basketball coaches (n = 443) completed a modified Sport Imagery Questionnaire (SIQ). Results showed that coaches rarely advised their athletes to use imagery (M = 2.50, SD = 1.80, on a 0 = “not at all” to 7 “all the time” scale). However, when they did advise their athletes to use imagery, they were most likely to encourage Motivation General-Mastery imagery, followed by Cognitive Specific, Cognitive General, Motivation Specific and Motivation General-Arousal. Positive correlations were found between frequency and effectiveness ratings for all SIQ subscales. Coaches indicated that the images typically served more than one function. Of the personal characteristics (i.e., gender, age, education level, status, years coaching, win percentage), only coaching status and win percentage were significantly related to the frequency with which coaches advised their athletes to use imagery and none of these variables were related to the coaches’ perceptions of the effectiveness of the images. All of the imagery-related characteristics (i.e., past training in imagery, use of imagery as an athlete, knowledge of imagery techniques, confidence in advising athletes to use imagery) were related to how often coaches advised their athletes to use imagery and the perceived effectiveness of the images. Coaches’ interest in imagery education programs, coupled with the findings that coaches with imagery training were more likely to encourage their athletes to use imagery, suggests that future coaching education programs may benefit from including information about imagery.

      • Rhizopus suinus의 原形質體 融合에 關하여

        이영하,김무송,최영길 충남대학교 자연과학연구소 1984 忠南科學硏究誌 Vol.11 No.2

The protoplast fusion of Rhizopus suinus was studied to develope a new method for strain improvement in Rhizopus species. High yields of protoplasts from 12hr-age of germlings were obtained by using an enzyme system containing Bacillus HD 2 chitosanase and commercial Driselase with 0.5M mannitol as osmotic stabilizer. The optimum temperature for mycelium digestion was 25℃ and the optimum pH was 6.0. The reversion frequency of these protoplasts on minimal and complete agar medium was 0.39 and 0.45%, respectively. In the presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG), intraspecific hybrids were aquired by the protoplast fusion between protoplasts of UV induced auxotrophs. Thirty percent of PEG (pH 6.0) was found to be most effective and the efficiency of PEG was enhanced by the addition of 10-50 mM CaCl_2. The average fusion frequency under optimum condition was 0.42%.
