An association between the physical activity level and skeletal muscle mass index in female university students with a past exercise habituation

Kazushige Oshita,Ryota Myotsuzono 대한골다공증학회 2021 Osteoporosis and Sarcopenia Vol.7 No.4

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the association between skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and physical activity among female university students who had exercise habituation in junior and high school. Methods: The body composition of 120 Japanese female students was measured using the bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) method, and their physical activity level (PAL) was measured using a factorial method. Based on the ‘Dietary Reference Intakes for Japanese’ (DRIs-J), according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, PAL (24-h energy consumption/basal metabolic rate) classifications were defined as low-PAL (PAL < 1.6), moderate-PAL (1.6 ≤ PAL < 1.9), and high-PAL (1.9 ≤ PAL < 2.2), respectively. Results: Individuals with low-PAL had a significantly lower SMI, especially for the lower limb muscles, than individuals with moderate-PAL or higher. More than 50% of the individuals with currently low-PAL corresponded or tended to correspond to the SMI cut-off value defined by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia or the 2017 National Health and Nutrition Survey of Japan. Therefore, more than half of the female students with currently low-PAL, even those with an exercise habituation in the past, corresponded to the cut-off value for muscle loss in sarcopenia diagnosis, particularly in the lower limbs. Conclusions: These results suggest that it is important to maintain a moderate or higher level of physical activity in the DRIs-J classification, even for young women who used to exercise in the past, to maintain muscle mass accordingly.

      • Aero-Structural Optimization of a Wing Equipped with Winglets

Kazushige Sato,Hideo Iso 한국항공우주학회 2008 한국항공우주학회 학술발표회 논문집 Vol.- No.-

The purpose of this work is to develop the winglets optimization process with trading between aerodynamic benefits and structural penalties. The evaluation model of winglets has been developed using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) coupled with wing structure models. A wing aero-elastic deformation at the flight condition is estimated using a beam model and air-load obtained from CFD (Euler code). Consequently, the aerodynamic performance of a wing equipped with winglets is evaluated at the 1-G night shape including wing aero-elastic penalties. The weight impacts are evaluated by resizing wing structure models to resist critical loads with the winglets. The evaluation model has been extended to optimization process using response surface method (RSM). The optimization process has been applied to design of winglets for a small civil airplane (The MTOW is 55ton). In present work. the winglet design variables consist of a span, a cant angle and an incidence. Wing twist distribution is also considered as a design variable to optimize the load distribution of wing-winglet configuration and correct wing shape at 1-G cruise condition. As a result, optimized wing with winglets provides significant cruise drag reduction with less weight impacts.

New Technology with Porous Materials: Progress in the Development of the Diesel Vehicle Business

        Kazushige Ohno 한국세라믹학회 2008 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.45 No.9

The long time of twenty years has passed since Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) was proposed before the practical use. The main factors that DPF has been put to practical use in this time, are the same time proposal of the evaluation method of SiC porous materials linked to the performance on the vehicle, and that the nature of thermal shock required for the soot regeneration (combustion of soot) in the DPF is different from the conventional requirement for the rather rapid thermal shock. For the requirements, these include demonstrating utmost the characteristic of SiC’s high thermal conductivity, and overcoming the difficulty of thermal expansion of SiC-DPF by dividing the filter into segments binding with the cement of lower Young’s modulus, and the innovation of technology around the diesel exhaust system such as Common-Rail system. As the results of these, the cumulative shipments of SiC-DPF have reached about 5 million, and it goes at no claim in the market. Death feigning in adult diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae)

        Kazushige Okai,Shinji Sugiura 한국응용곤충학회 2023 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.26 No.2

Death feigning is an anti-predator defense mechanism that involves a state of immobility in response to external stimuli. Predaceous diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) utilize chemical substances to defend themselves against predators, while other defensive behaviors have rarely been reported. In this study, we report that adults of eight dytiscid species (Agabus conspicuus, A. japonicus, Cybister brevis, Graphoderus adamsii, Hydaticus bowringii, H. grammicus, Ilybius apicalis, and Rhantus suturalis) performed death feigning. When these species were dropped from a height of 300 mm into a plastic case without water, 30.0–85.7 % of the dropped individuals displayed death feigning (average duration: 8.6–371.4 s). In G. adamsii and H. bowringii, 13.3 % and 48.6 % of the dropped adults folded all of their legs while feigning death. When the adults of G. adamsii and H. bowringii were dropped directly into water, none of them feigned death. These results suggest that death feigning of some dytiscid species functions to avoid predators on the ground.

Effect of Myoarchitectonic Spinolaminoplasty on Concurrent Hypertension in Patients With Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy

        Kazushige Itoki,Ryu Kurokawa,Tetsuro Shingo,Phyo Kim 대한척추신경외과학회 2018 Neurospine Vol.15 No.1

Objective: When treating patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM), we often note amelioration in concomitant hypertension after surgery. To assess the effects of surgery and the mechanisms thereof, blood pressure (BP) and parasympathetic nervous activity were monitored prospectively in CSM patients undergoing surgery. Methods: Sixty-eight consecutive CSM patients who underwent surgery with myoarchitectonic spinolaminoplasty were enrolled. BP and electrocardiography were recorded preoperatively and at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. Forty-six patients completed the scheduled follow-ups and were analyzed. Preoperatively, 17 had a mean BP higher than 100 mmHg (the HT group) and 12 had hypertension despite taking medication (the HT-refractory group). To evaluate alterations in parasympathetic function, the coefficient of variation of the RR interval (CVRR) was evaluated. Results: A significant BP reduction was observed in the HT group 6 months after surgery, but not in the normotensive group (n=29). The effect was more remarkable in the HT-refractory group. A transient BP increase at 1 and 3 months after surgery was observed in all groups. Comparisons were made between groups classified by age (over 65 years or younger than 60 years) and the presence or absence of an intramedullary hyperintense T2 signal on magnetic resonance imaging, but no significant differences were detected. Measurements of CVRR did not significantly differ between the groups over the course of follow-up. Conclusion: Hypertension coexisting with CSM can be ameliorated after surgical treatment. The effect is likely to be mediated by moderation of sympathetic activity, rather than parasympathetic activation. We believe that a combination of adequate decompression of the spinal cord and relief from musculoskeletal stresses effectuate this moderation.

      • Design of a Human-Skill Based PID Controller using CMACs

        Kazushige Koiwai,Kazuo Kawada,Toru Yamamoto 제어로봇시스템학회 2008 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2008 No.10

Skilled workers decrease in these years. Then it is a problem that skilled techniques and know-how of specific work are not taken over to next generations. Therefore, a controller which is based on a human-skill is needed to design. On the other hand, in recent year, various neural networks (NNs) have been proposed. These technologies of the NNs enable us to deal with the nonlinear systems, and they play an important role in the field of control engineering. Furthermore, a cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) has been proposed as one of artificial NNs. The CMAC is highly abstracted mathematically, considering the cerebellar as a controller for the body motion system. The CMAC has the advantage for the short learning time compared with the conventional NNs. In this paper, a design of human-skill based PID controller using CMACs is proposed. According to the proposed method, PID gains are tuned by some CAMCs which have learned human-skill. Furthermore, the experiment in order to illustrate the proposed scheme was performed by using one of pilot-scaled helicopter control models.
