      • Nurse safety in home healthcare: Korean advanced practice nurses’ experiences

        Kayoung Lee,Hyejin Kim,Ji Yeon Lee,Taewha Lee 한국간호과학회 2021 한국간호과학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.10

Aim(s): The vast majority of home healthcare nurses in Korea are female and work alone when conducting home visits. While promoting patient safety, home healthcare nurses are often exposed to unpredictable risks in various environments, such as car accidents, infection, or violence. This qualitative descriptive study aimed to describe the safety of home healthcare nurses in Korea. Method(s): Data related to nurse safety were obtained from the study, which was conducted in 2019 to explore home healthcare nurses’ perceptions of patient safety. In the original study, data were collected from a total of 20 home healthcare nurses from 11 general hospitals and one primary care clinic through individual, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews, and were analyzed using a conventional content analysis approach. Result(s): Two main themes emerged regarding nurse safety in home healthcare settings: exposure to various situational risks and useful strategies for promoting nurse safety. Situational risks include verbal violence or sexual harassment from patients or formal/family caregivers, exposure to possible infection from patients with communicable diseases following their discharge from inpatient settings, car accidents, severe weather, uncontrolled pets, and in-home visits conducted alone. Useful strategies for promoting nurse safety include: conducting home environment assessments during the first visit, using personal protective equipment, maintaining the vehicles used for home visits, and developing institutional protocols or legal protection to make safer environments for nurses. Conclusion(s): Our findings highlight the importance of nurse safety in Korean home healthcare settings. Health system leaders should consider the potential risks that home healthcare nurses confront when they practice alone in various environments. More studies are needed to investigate testable interventions that can improve the working conditions for home healthcare nurses, thereby leading to the development of environment and culture characterized by safety for both patients and nurses.

      • Transport Gap in Dual-Gated Graphene Bilayers Using Oxides as Dielectrics

        Kayoung Lee,Fallahazad, B.,Hongki Min,Tutuc, E. IEEE 2013 IEEE transactions on electron devices Vol.60 No.1

<P>Graphene bilayers in Bernal stacking exhibit a transverse electric (E) field-dependent band gap, which can be used to increase the channel resistivity and enable higher on/off ratio devices. We provide a systematic investigation of transport characteristics in dual-gated graphene bilayer devices as a function of density and E field and at temperatures from room temperature down to 0.3 K. The sample conductivity shows finite threshold voltages along the electron and hole branches, which increase as the E field increases, similar to a gapped semiconductor. We extract the transport gap as a function of E field and discuss the impact of disorder. In addition, we show that beyond the threshold, the bilayer conductivity shows a highly linear dependence on density, which is largely insensitive to the applied E field and the temperature.</P>

Sex-specific relationships between alcohol consumption and vitamin D levels

Kayoung Lee 한국영양학회 2012 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.6 No.1

This study assessed the association between vitamin D sufficiency (serum 25(OH)D ≥ 30 ng/mL) and alcohol consumption using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2009. The following characteristics were obtained in 7,010 Korean participants ≥ 19-years-of-age: serum 25(OH)D level, alcohol consumption (drinking frequency, drinking number of alcoholic beverages on a typical occasion, average daily-alcohol intake), and potential confounders (age, residence, housing status, occupation, total fat and lean mass, smoking, physical activity, history of liver diseases, liver function, and daily intake of energy, protein, and calcium). After adjusting for confounders, vitamin D sufficiency in men was significantly associated with drinking frequency, number of alcoholic drinks consumed, and average daily alcohol intake; odds ratio of 1.21-1.72, 2.17-3.04, and 2.27-3.09, respectively. Increase in the three alcohol drinking-related behaviors was also linearly associated with increase in serum 25(OH)D level in men. By comparison, there was no significant association between alcohol intake and serum 25(OH)D level in women. The positive association between vitamin D sufficiency and alcohol consumption was evident only in Korean men.

Masculine or Metrosexual? The Critical Perspectives on the Media Display of Male Athletes

( Kayoung Kim ) 한국체육학회 2020 International journal of human movement science Vol.14 No.2

The critical feminist perspective provides understanding of the female-centered viewpoint to explore the media display of male athletes. By understanding the different gender perspectives on the media display, this study explores how female athletes interpret the media images of male sports celebrities in the mainstream magazines. This study further investigates the gendered sexualization in the media representation of athletes. A photo interviewing with sixteen female athletes conducted to explore the male athletes’ media display in the men’s lifestyle magazines. Findings suggest that three different men’s lifestyle magazines represent different forms of masculinities depend on the purpose and target audiences, although hegemonic masculinity is woven throughout all magazines. Female athletes immediately recognized the differences in the sexualization of male bodies by comparing with female athletes in a similar type of magazines such as Fitness and ESPN The magazine’s body issue. This study provided rich insights into how female athletes think about different types of masculinities and the gendered sexualization in a similar type of media outlet.

Showcasing the Athlete Body: A Qualitative Study for Understanding Consumers’ Expectations about Sexualized Female Images on the Leading Media Brands

( Kayoung Kim ),( Mark Jaewon Chang ) 한국체육학회 2021 International journal of human movement science Vol.15 No.3

Leading media brands present sexualized content of female athletes in order to increase their sales. Sports media decision-makers believe that sexual content can make money and meet the expectations of consumers. The main objective of the current study was to examine consumer expectations and the concerns of female athletes. The authors utilized critical feminist theory and successfully navigated how female athletics discuss sexual images. We conducted in-depth photographic interviews with sixteen student-athletes using images of sports celebrities from the ESPN Body Issue and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. The results indicated that sexualized images fail to meet the expectations of female athletes and can negatively impact media consumers and younger audiences.

Enhancement of GluN2B Subunit-Containing NMDA Receptor Underlies Serotonergic Regulation of Long-Term Potentiation after Critical Period in the Rat Visual Cortex

        Kayoung Joo,Duck-Joo Rhie,Hyun-Jong Jang 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 2015 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.19 No.6

Serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] regulates synaptic plasticity in the visual cortex. Although the effects of 5-HT on plasticity showed huge diversity depending on the ages of animals and species, it has been unclear how 5-HT can show such diverse effects. In the rat visual cortex, 5-HT suppressed long-term potentiation (LTP) at 5 weeks but enhanced LTP at 8 weeks. We speculated that this difference may originate from differential regulation of neurotransmission by 5-HT between the age groups. Thus, we investigated the effects of 5-HT on apha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR)-, γ-aminobutyric acid receptor type A (GABAAR)-, and N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptor (NMDAR)-mediated neurotransmissions and their involvement in the differential regulation of plasticity between 5 and 8 weeks. AMPAR-mediated currents were not affected by 5-HT at both 5 and 8 weeks. GABAAR-mediated currents were enhanced by 5-HT at both age groups. However, 5-HT enhanced NMDAR-mediated currents only at 8 weeks. The enhancement of NMDAR-mediated currents appeared to be mediated by the enhanced function of GluN2B subunit-containing NMDAR. The enhanced GABAAR- and NMDAR-mediated neurotransmissions were responsible for the suppression of LTP at 5 weeks and the facilitation of LTP at 8 weeks, respectively. These results indicate that the effects of 5-HT on neurotransmission change with development, and the changes may underlie the differential regulation of synaptic plasticity between different age groups. Thus, the developmental changes in 5-HT function should be carefully considered while investigating the 5-HT-mediated metaplastic control of the cortical network.

코로나바이러스 감염증(COVID-19) 회복 노인 및 신경인지장애 환자들의 잔존 신경정신과적 영향에 대한 고찰

        Kayoung Kim 대한임상노인의학회 2022 대한임상노인의학회지 Vol.23 No.1

Among COVID-19 survivors, residual fatigue, emotional symptoms, and cognitive problems have been reported persistently. These neuropsychiatric sequelae have been regarded as the main symptom of post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS), which is considered significant in the elderly and patients with cognitive decline. Among the reviewed studies, increasing age was considered a significant risk factor for PCS development. In addition, various studies have reported social isolation, persistent mourning disorder after experiencing loss, cognitive decline, and increased psychological stress in the caregivers as the COVID-19 pandemic and social measures such as social distancing prolong. These factors may be causes of the vulnerable environment of the elderly population during the long-term COVID-19 pandemic. The subjective cognitive decline that persists after recovery may not correlate with COVID-19 severity, but the severity of cognitive decline is associated with the COVID-19 severity. In addition, cognitive dysfunction may increase the likelihood of hospitalization for COVID-19. A careful evaluation of patients reporting decreased daily living function and quality of life after COVID-19 recovery and further prospective studies are needed using objective cognitive function tests.
