A Case Study of Two French Study or “Discovery” Bibles, La Bible expliquée (BEX) and ZeBible

Katie Badie 대한성서공회 2018 성경원문연구 Vol.- No.42

This article shows the growing importance of publishing Bibles with notes, commentaries and articles that aim to help the unfamiliar reader to understand, read and appreciate the relevance of the Bible. It also suggests that the material added to a translation and its presentation can change the way that particular translation is received. The two study Bibles, both published by the French Bible Society, are La Bible expliquée (“The Bible explained”), or the BEX, first published in 2004 and ZeBible for young people, first published in 2011. Both Bibles add short commentaries or notices on the outside margins. The general idea is to add non-specialist information and advice to help the reader overcome obstacles to understanding the text and to see the relevance of the Bible for everyday living in today’s world. The angle of the commentaries is cultural (for the BEX) and existential (for ZeBible) rather than academic or dogmatic. ZeBible seeks to help young readers to find their way around the Bible according to their personal interests by offering different tools for approaching the Bible text. However, in both cases, the short commentaries are respectful of the reader and of the text: they do not seek to impose an interpretation or application, but rather to encourage the reader to think about the text for him or herself. The article will also highlight the importance of developing the extra-biblical material in mixed confession working groups and, for the case of ZeBible, the concept of ongoing partnerships and the use of social media to accompany the published Bible.

Dysregulation of the EphrinB2−EphB4 ratio in pediatric cerebral arteriovenous malformations is associated with endothelial cell in vitro and functions as a novel noninvasive biomarker in patients

        Katie Pricola Fehnel,David L. Penn,Micah Duggins-Warf,Maxwell Gruber,Steven Pineda,Julie Sesen,Alexander Moses-Gardner,Nishali Shah,Jessica Driscoll,David Zurakowski,Darren B. Orbach,Edward R. Smith 생화학분자생물학회 2020 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.52 No.-

We investigated (1) EphrinB2 and EphB4 receptor expression in cerebral AVMs, (2) the impact of an altered EphrinB2: EphB4 ratio on brain endothelial cell function and (3) potential translational applications of these data. The following parameters were compared between AVM endothelial cells (AVMECs) and human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMVECs): quantified EphrinB2 and EphB4 expression, angiogenic potential, and responses to manipulation of the EphrinB2:EphB4 ratio via pharmacologic stimulation/inhibition. To investigate the clinical relevance of these in vitro data, Ephrin expression was assessed in AVM tissue (by immunohistochemistry) and urine (by ELISA) from pediatric patients with AVM (n=30), other cerebrovascular disease (n=14) and control patients (n=29), and the data were subjected to univariate and multivariate statistical analyses. Compared to HBMVECs, AVMECs demonstrated increased invasion (p=0.04) and migration (p=0.08), impaired tube formation (p=0.06) and increased EphrinB2:EphB4 ratios. Altering the EphrinB2:EphB4 ratio (by increasing EphrinB2 or blocking EphB4) in HBMVECs increased invasion (p=0.03 and p<0.05, respectively). EphrinB2 expression was increased in AVM tissue, which correlated with increased urinary EphrinB2 levels in AVM patients. Using the optimal urinary cutoff value (EphrinB2>25.7pg/μg), AVMs were detected with high accuracy (80% vs. controls) and were distinguished from other cerebrovascular disease (75% accuracy). Posttreatment urinary EphrinB2 levels normalized in an index patient. In summary, AVMECs have an EphrinB2:EphB4 ratio that is increased compared to that of normal HBMVECs. Changing this ratio in HBMVECs induces AVMEC-like behavior. EphrinB2 is clinically relevant, and its levels are increased in AVM tissue and patient urine. This work suggests that dysregulation of the EphrinB2:EphB4 signaling cascade and increases in EphrinB2 may play a role in AVM development, with potential utility as a diagnostic and therapeutic target.

Reflection on the Use of Blended Learning at a Korean University

        ( Katie Mae Klemsen ),( Myeong Hee Seong ) 범태평양응용언어학회 2012 범태평양응용언어학회지 Vol.16 No.2

The purpose of this study was to examine students`` satisfaction and investigate the potential of improved learning outcomes in smart and blended learning environments. This paper reflects on the experience of the delivery of a program at H University in Seoul, Korea using smart and blended learning. The goal was to apply the findings to current blended learning models in order to explore possible modifications that may enhance learning environments for Korean university students. The participants were 19 students enrolled in an English Language major course, Speaking 2: Presentation, which aimed to teach students to deliver oral presentations in English. Data was collected from student questionnaires, the smart/blended learning platform English 360, and an instructor reflection journal in order to address the following research questions: 1) What are the students`` perceptions of smart/blended learning environments?; 2) What are the benefits of smart/blended learning environments?; and 3) What are the drawbacks of smart/blended learning environments? The analysis of the data indicated that the overall student perception of smart and blended learning environments is positive. In addition, students`` perception of the course content influenced their interest in smart and blended learning environments. One of the primary findings was the importance of clear and transparent communication and organization of a smart and blended learning environment. Students indicated that they would be interested in additional courses that utilized smart/blended environments.

Pregnancy After Breast Cancer – Prognostic Safety and Pregnancy Outcomes According to Oestrogen Receptor Status: A Systematic Review

        Katie Nolan,Michael R. Boland,Arnold D.K. Hill 한국유방암학회 2022 Journal of breast cancer Vol.25 No.6

Purpose: Breast cancer is the primary cause of cancer-related death in women. Women diagnosed with estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer have prolonged treatment durations. Owing to the paucity of research and lack of consensus regarding conception planning and pregnancy for patients with ER-positive breast cancer, we aimed to assess pregnancy and survival outcomes in women with ER-positive breast cancer during and after treatment. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the available studies on pregnancy after ERpositive breast cancer. The assessed outcomes included overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), hormonal therapy duration, and pregnancy outcomes. Results: Ultimately, 2,669 patients from five studies were included in this study. When all breast cancer receptor subtypes were included in the analysis, pregnancy after breast cancer was associated with a time-dependent protective effect on both DFS and OS. This protective effect was not evident when examining ER-positive patients with subsequent pregnancies, and no significant differences in DFS were observed. ER-positive patients who became pregnant received significantly lower rates of hormonal therapy. Hormonal treatment at the time of pregnancy was correlated with increased rates of termination owing to concerns about teratogenic effects. Conclusions: Pregnancy after breast cancer did not significantly affect DFS in ER-positive patients over a follow-up period of 5–10 years from diagnosis, although did significantly affect hormonal treatment duration in the reviewed studies. Further analysis and in-depth studies are required to assess the effects of altered hormonal treatment times, as well as patient management related to pregnancy planning after breast cancer.

Phone-based Interaction and Development of L2 Oral Fluency

        Katie J. Kim 한국영어어문교육학회 2012 영어어문교육 Vol.18 No.4

Whereas the telephone has been employed as an alternative pedagogical device in many East Asian countries (e.g., Korea, China, the Philippines etc.), the impacts of telephone communication to development of adult second language (L2) learning have been rarely investigated (e.g., Kim, 2012 an exception) in the field of second language acquisition (SLA). Acknowledging the absence of empirical research, this paper examines benefits of phone-based interaction (PBI) to a learner’s development of L2 performance, particularly, L2 oral fluency. The study observed systematic and dynamic development of oral L2 fluency from an adult learner’s speech data, who participated in the two-month PBI exclusively in English. Oral fluency was measured by temporal variables (e.g., speech rates and pause rates) and hesitation phenomena (e.g., repetition, self-correction, and false starts) over time. The results of the study illustrated that the learner achieved faster speech rates and lower pause rates after the two-month period of PBI, which is an indication of development of L2 fluency. The learner’s development of L2 fluency was also supported by a decrease of repetition, self-correction, and false starts after two months. Therefore, the study suggests that PBI positively affects adult learners’ L2 fluency, which in tum may facilitate development of L2 proficiency.

Who is More Effective in Teaching TOEIC, Korean or Native English Teacher?

Katie Mae Klemsen,Myeong Hee Seong 한국영어어문교육학회 2012 영어어문교육 Vol.18 No.1

This study investigates Korean university students’ perception of TOEIC courses taught by Korean and native English teachers and test results in an effort to identify better methodologies to teach TOEIC. To find out the student’s perceptions of TOEIC classes, a survey was conducted. The one hundred sixty students who attended the TOEIC courses participated in a questionnaire survey at the end of the semester. Based on a survey of students’ assumptions toward TOEIC classes and teachers, this paper discusses the skills students feel important to improve their TOEIC scores and what their actual scores show. The research questions were: 1) what are some of the benefits of having a Korean or native English teacher for TOEIC courses? 2) what are some of the drawbacks of having a Korean or native English teacher for TOEIC courses? The results indicated that Korean and native English teachers have an equal chance to become successful teachers, but the methods used by the two groups are not the same in the context of teaching TOEIC courses; in the short term, direct test preparation, dictation and repetition by Korean or native teachers might be good methods for TOEIC courses, however, in the long term, conversation and discussion performed by native teachers may affect scores in a positive way.

Application of Supercharge End-to-Side (SETS) Obturator to Femoral Nerve Transfer in Electrical Injury-Induced Neuropathy to Improve Knee Extension

        Katie Pei-Hsuan Wu,Li-Ching Lin,Johnny Chuieng-Yi Lu 대한성형외과학회 2022 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.49 No.6

Femoral nerve injuries are devastating injuries that lead to paralysis of the quadriceps muscles, weakening knee extension to prohibit ambulation. We report a devastating case of electrical injury-induced femoral neuropathy, where no apparent site of nerve disruption can be identified, thus inhibiting the traditional choices of nerve reconstruction such as nerve repair, grafting, or transfer. Concomitant spinal cord injury resulted in spastic myopathy of the antagonist muscles that further restricted knee extension. Our strategy was to perform (1) supercharge end-to-side technique (SETS) to augment the function of target muscles and (2) fractional tendon lengthening to release the spastic muscles. Dramatic postoperative improvement in passive and active range of motion highlights the effectiveness of this strategy to manage partial femoral nerve injuries.

        Three-Dimensional Nitrogen-Doped Hollow Carbon Fiber with a Micro-Scale Diameter as a Binder-Free Oxygen Electrode for Li-O2 Batteries

Lim, Katie Heeyum,Kweon, Heejun,Kim, Hansung The Electrochemical Society 2019 Journal of the Electrochemical Society Vol.166 No.14

<P>A nitrogen-doped hollow carbon fiber was prepared using polydopamine and electrospun polystyrene fibers as a sacrificial template for the oxygen electrode of Li-O2 batteries. Owing to the fiber structure, a binder is not needed to fabricate the electrode, which eliminates the possibility of side reactions associated with a binder. It was demonstrated that the hollow tubular structure with a large inner diameter is highly effective for accommodating a substantial amount of discharge products without hindering the mass transfer of reactants, even under the fully discharged condition. The reversibility and rate capability were improved by optimizing the length of the fiber. The nitrogen-doped carbon reduced the overall overpotential between the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions. Therefore, the nitrogen-doped hollow carbon fiber can be used to obtain a highly effective oxygen electrode for Li-O2 batteries.</P>
