      • Books like me: An investigation of urban elementary teachers’ journey towards more culturally relevant pedagogy

Ciampa Katia,Ciampa Katia 한국다문화교육학회 2021 Multicultural Education Review Vol.13 No.2

The single-site case study described herein is part of a two-year professional development (PD) initiative aimed at helping teachers from an urban elementary (K-8) school learn how to implement explicit, transactional comprehension strategy instruction across grades using culturally relevant books. This paper describes the urban elementary teachers’ successes and challenges in their first-year implementation of providing culturally relevant literacy instruction. Three types of qualitative data were collected: (a) researchers’ anecdotal notes during the professional learning sessions; (b) teacher focus groups; (c) teachers’ blog reflection entries. The findings revealed that the professional development for culturally relevant literacy instruction resulted in teachers’ heightened awareness of how identities and social subjectivities are negotiated in and through culturally relevant discourse, the implicit and explicit bias in the school curriculum. Finally, professional development served as a catalyst for facilitating students’ and teachers’ racial and cultural identity development.

Application of Supercharge End-to-Side (SETS) Obturator to Femoral Nerve Transfer in Electrical Injury-Induced Neuropathy to Improve Knee Extension

        Katie Pei-Hsuan Wu,Li-Ching Lin,Johnny Chuieng-Yi Lu 대한성형외과학회 2022 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.49 No.6

Femoral nerve injuries are devastating injuries that lead to paralysis of the quadriceps muscles, weakening knee extension to prohibit ambulation. We report a devastating case of electrical injury-induced femoral neuropathy, where no apparent site of nerve disruption can be identified, thus inhibiting the traditional choices of nerve reconstruction such as nerve repair, grafting, or transfer. Concomitant spinal cord injury resulted in spastic myopathy of the antagonist muscles that further restricted knee extension. Our strategy was to perform (1) supercharge end-to-side technique (SETS) to augment the function of target muscles and (2) fractional tendon lengthening to release the spastic muscles. Dramatic postoperative improvement in passive and active range of motion highlights the effectiveness of this strategy to manage partial femoral nerve injuries.

Pregnancy After Breast Cancer – Prognostic Safety and Pregnancy Outcomes According to Oestrogen Receptor Status: A Systematic Review

        Katie Nolan,Michael R. Boland,Arnold D.K. Hill 한국유방암학회 2022 Journal of breast cancer Vol.25 No.6

Purpose: Breast cancer is the primary cause of cancer-related death in women. Women diagnosed with estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer have prolonged treatment durations. Owing to the paucity of research and lack of consensus regarding conception planning and pregnancy for patients with ER-positive breast cancer, we aimed to assess pregnancy and survival outcomes in women with ER-positive breast cancer during and after treatment. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the available studies on pregnancy after ERpositive breast cancer. The assessed outcomes included overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), hormonal therapy duration, and pregnancy outcomes. Results: Ultimately, 2,669 patients from five studies were included in this study. When all breast cancer receptor subtypes were included in the analysis, pregnancy after breast cancer was associated with a time-dependent protective effect on both DFS and OS. This protective effect was not evident when examining ER-positive patients with subsequent pregnancies, and no significant differences in DFS were observed. ER-positive patients who became pregnant received significantly lower rates of hormonal therapy. Hormonal treatment at the time of pregnancy was correlated with increased rates of termination owing to concerns about teratogenic effects. Conclusions: Pregnancy after breast cancer did not significantly affect DFS in ER-positive patients over a follow-up period of 5–10 years from diagnosis, although did significantly affect hormonal treatment duration in the reviewed studies. Further analysis and in-depth studies are required to assess the effects of altered hormonal treatment times, as well as patient management related to pregnancy planning after breast cancer.

External apical root resorption 6 months after initiation of orthodontic treatment: A randomized clinical trial comparing fixed appliances and orthodontic aligners

Katia Cristina Toyokawa-Sperandio,Ana Clá,udia de Castro Ferreira Conti,Thais Maria Freire Fernandes,Renata Rodrigues de Almeida-Pedrin,Marcio Rodrigues de Almeida,Paula Vanessa Pedron Oltramari 대한치과교정학회 2021 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.51 No.5

Objective: To compare the magnitude of external apical root resorption (EARR) 6 months after starting orthodontic treatment using orthodontic aligners (OAs) and fixed appliances (FAs). Methods: This parallel randomized clinical trial included 40 patients randomized into two groups: OA group (n = 20, 160 incisors) and FA group (n = 20, 160 incisors). For evaluation of the tooth length, periapical radiographs and standardized linear measurements of the maxillary and mandibular incisors were acquired before (T0) and 6 months after treatment initiation (T1). EARR was calculated through the difference in length between the two time points (T1–T0). Statistical comparisons were performed by means of using t -tests, chi-squared test and covariance analysis (a = 5%). Results: Rounding of the root apex was observed in both groups; the resorption involved 2.88% of the root length, so 97.12% of the tooth length remained intact. Intragroup comparisons between the two time points revealed a significant difference, with (T1–T0) ranging from −0.52 to −0.88 mm in the FA group and from −0.52 to −0.85 mm in the OA group. In the intergroup comparisons, only tooth #21 presented a statistically significant difference (OA: −0.52 ± 0.57 mm, FA: −0.86 ± 0.60 mm); however, the overall differences between groups were not clinically relevant, ranging from 0.03 to 0.35 mm. Conclusions: OA and FA treatment resulted in a similar degree of EARR in the maxillary and mandibular incisors at 6 months after treatment initiation. However, the amount of resorption was small and does not impair tooth longevity.

Multi-criteria retrieval of CAD assembly models

Katia Lupinetti,Franca Giannini,Marina Monti,Jean-Philippe Pernot 한국CDE학회 2018 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.5 No.1

Being able to reuse existing design knowledge is of major interest to help designers during the creation of new products. This is true at the level of the parts and even more at the level of the assemblies of multiple parts. Meaningful information and knowledge can be extracted from existing geometric models and associated data and metadata, as well as from the processes followed to define them. This paper proposes a method to characterize and structure CAD assembly models to enable the retrieving of similar models from a database. A framework has been devised for the retrieval of globally and/or partially similar assembly models according to multiple user-specified search criteria. It is based on an assembly descriptor, called the Enriched Assembly Model, which is an attributed graph that encodes all the required data automatically extracted from the geometry and structure of the CAD models. The data are organized in four layers: structural, assembly interface, shape and statistic layers. Starting from a real CAD model or from an abstract query model, the algorithm retrieves models from the database by solving a matching problem. The matching between two assembly models is translated into the problem of finding a subisomorphism between two EAMs. The layered organization of the EAM allows partially defined queries, which can be further refined. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated with results obtained from the developed software prototype.

Prebiotic Effect of Fructooligosaccharide in the Simulator of the Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME® Model)

        Katia Sivieri,Martha L. Villarreal Morales,Susana M.I. Saad,Maria A. Tallarico Adorno,Isabel Kimiko Sakamoto,Elizeu A. Rossi 한국식품영양과학회 2014 Journal of medicinal food Vol.17 No.8

Maintaining ‘‘gut health’’ is a goal for scientists throughout the world. Therefore, microbiota management models for testing probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics have been developed. The SHIME model was used to study the effect of fructooligosaccharide (FOS) on the fermentation pattern of the colon microbiota. Initially, an inoculum prepared from human feces was introduced into the reactor vessels and stabilized over 2 weeks using a culture medium. This stabilization period was followed by a 2-week control period during which the microbiota was monitored. The microbiota was then subjected to a 4-week treatment period by adding 5 g/day-1 FOS to vessel one (the ‘‘stomach’’ compartment). Plate counts, Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE), short-chain fatty acid (SCFA), and ammonium analyses were used to observe the influence of FOS treatment in simulated colon compartments. A significant increase (P < .01) in the Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. populations was observed during the treatment period. The DGGE obtained showed the overall microbial community was changed in the ascending colon compartment of the SHIME reactor. FOS induced increase of the SCFA concentration (P < .05) during the treatment period, mainly due to significant increased levels of acetic and butyric acids. However, ammonium concentrations increased during the same period (P < .01). This study indicates the usefulness of in vitro methods that simulate the colon region as part of research towards the improvement of human health.

The return of history: Museum, heritage, and national identity in Imperial Russia

Katia Dianina 한양대학교 아태지역연구센터 2010 Journal of Eurasian Studies Vol.1 No.2

History plays a major role in the formation of nations. Museums of history, as they emerged during the long 19th century, are pivotal sites for the display of national heritage and identity. The present article considers the origins of the State Historical Museum in Moscow as a “festival of public activity” and discusses its unique civic character. Although the idea of a public museum was not new, in imperial Russia it had existed only as a figment for much of the nineteenth century, until Russian National Museum (Russkii natsional’nyi muzei) was founded in 1872. The press represented the museum as an institution that should cultivate in its visitors pride for the country and “lay a foundation for national consciousness.” The museum’s vast task—to visually represent the millennial history of the Russian state—qualified the Historical Museum as a national institution. The museum was “national” in another sense, too: it came to occupy a major place in public culture. Prepared by years of open discourse that problematized and prioritized issues of national identity in the course of which Russian society also learned the basic grammar of representation, the museum assumed a prominent place in society. Years before its opening, the Historical Museum had already become the talk of the nation. Paradoxically, unlike the popular discourse built around the museum, the institution itself did not fare well. When in 1883, eleven years after its founding, the museum finally opened its doors to the public in conjunction with Alexander III’s coronation, only a fraction of the overall design was implemented. Today the newly opened State Historical Museum returns to assume the role in society that was well articulated but never realized by its progenitor: to serve as an anchor of national identity, a link between the present and the past, and a monument to a revived national tradition.

Images of agri-tourism: evidence from Germany

Katia Laura Sidali 한국마케팅과학회 2014 마케팅과학연구 Vol.24 No.1

Based on a classical approach, this paper analyses the cognitive and affective propertiesof attitude and develops a structural equation model to explain the determinants ofpreference for farm tourism. The findings of this study reveal that attitude andlarge-sized families have a positive influence on choice. Furthermore, it appears thatthe traditional image of German farm tourism has been replaced by a more dynamicone. However, this tourist form still has to cope with stereotypes as well as a perceiveddeficit of quality standards.

Dysregulation of the EphrinB2−EphB4 ratio in pediatric cerebral arteriovenous malformations is associated with endothelial cell in vitro and functions as a novel noninvasive biomarker in patients

        Katie Pricola Fehnel,David L. Penn,Micah Duggins-Warf,Maxwell Gruber,Steven Pineda,Julie Sesen,Alexander Moses-Gardner,Nishali Shah,Jessica Driscoll,David Zurakowski,Darren B. Orbach,Edward R. Smith 생화학분자생물학회 2020 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.52 No.-

We investigated (1) EphrinB2 and EphB4 receptor expression in cerebral AVMs, (2) the impact of an altered EphrinB2: EphB4 ratio on brain endothelial cell function and (3) potential translational applications of these data. The following parameters were compared between AVM endothelial cells (AVMECs) and human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMVECs): quantified EphrinB2 and EphB4 expression, angiogenic potential, and responses to manipulation of the EphrinB2:EphB4 ratio via pharmacologic stimulation/inhibition. To investigate the clinical relevance of these in vitro data, Ephrin expression was assessed in AVM tissue (by immunohistochemistry) and urine (by ELISA) from pediatric patients with AVM (n=30), other cerebrovascular disease (n=14) and control patients (n=29), and the data were subjected to univariate and multivariate statistical analyses. Compared to HBMVECs, AVMECs demonstrated increased invasion (p=0.04) and migration (p=0.08), impaired tube formation (p=0.06) and increased EphrinB2:EphB4 ratios. Altering the EphrinB2:EphB4 ratio (by increasing EphrinB2 or blocking EphB4) in HBMVECs increased invasion (p=0.03 and p<0.05, respectively). EphrinB2 expression was increased in AVM tissue, which correlated with increased urinary EphrinB2 levels in AVM patients. Using the optimal urinary cutoff value (EphrinB2>25.7pg/μg), AVMs were detected with high accuracy (80% vs. controls) and were distinguished from other cerebrovascular disease (75% accuracy). Posttreatment urinary EphrinB2 levels normalized in an index patient. In summary, AVMECs have an EphrinB2:EphB4 ratio that is increased compared to that of normal HBMVECs. Changing this ratio in HBMVECs induces AVMEC-like behavior. EphrinB2 is clinically relevant, and its levels are increased in AVM tissue and patient urine. This work suggests that dysregulation of the EphrinB2:EphB4 signaling cascade and increases in EphrinB2 may play a role in AVM development, with potential utility as a diagnostic and therapeutic target.
