Three Dimensional Bioprinting for Hepatic Tissue Engineering: From In Vitro Models to Clinical Applications

        Kasturi Meghana,Mathur Vidhi,Gadre Mrunmayi,Srinivasan Varadharajan,Vasanthan Kirthanashri S. 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2024 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.21 No.1

Fabrication of functional organs is the holy grail of tissue engineering and the possibilities of repairing a partial or complete liver to treat chronic liver disorders are discussed in this review. Liver is the largest gland in the human body and plays a responsible role in majority of metabolic function and processes. Chronic liver disease is one of the leading causes of death globally and the current treatment strategy of organ transplantation holds its own demerits. Hence there is a need to develop an in vitro liver model that mimics the native microenvironment. The developed model should be a reliable to understand the pathogenesis, screen drugs and assist to repair and replace the damaged liver. The three-dimensional bioprinting is a promising technology that recreates in vivo alike in vitro model for transplantation, which is the goal of tissue engineers. The technology has great potential due to its precise control and its ability to homogeneously distribute cells on all layers in a complex structure. This review gives an overview of liver tissue engineering with a special focus on 3D bioprinting and bioinks for liver disease modelling and drug screening.

Ultrasound assisted extraction of red cabbage and encapsulation by freeze–drying: moisture sorption isotherms and thermodynamic characteristics of encapsulate

        Kasturi Pusty,Kshirod K. Dash,Ajita Tiwari,V. M. BALASUBRAMANIAM 한국식품과학회 2023 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.32 No.14

In the present study encapsulation of ultrasound assisted red cabbage extract was carried out using four different carrier agents such as maltodextrin, gum arbic, xanthan gum, and gellan gum. Among the four hydrocolloids investigated, maltodextrin was found to have the least destructive effect on anthocyanin content (14.87 mg C3G/g dw), TPC (54.51 ± 0.09 mg GAE/g dw), TFC (19.82 Mg RE/g dw) and antioxidant activity (74.15%) upon freeze–drying. Subsequently a storage study was conducted using maltodextrin as carrier agent at 25–50 °C. The Clausius–Clapeyron equation was used to evaluate the net isosteric heat (qst) of water adsorption. The differential entropy (ΔS) and qst decreased from 82.298 to 38.628 J/mol, and 27.518 kJ/mol to 12.505 kJ/mol, respectively as the moisture content increased from 2 to 14%. The value of isokinetic energy and Gibb’s free energy were found to be 364.88 and − 1.596 kJ/mol for freeze dried red cabbage.

Empowerment or Embellishment? : The Case of All-Women Police Stations in Madras, India

Kasturi, Prema EWHA WOMANS UNIVERSITY PRESS 1995 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.1 No.-

In a male dominated society, women do not receive the same encouragement as men do in taking jobs traditionally identified as the male domain such as policing. Objectives of this study of women policing in India are to provide an insight into the organization and working of the all-women police stations, to identify the strengths and weaknesses, and to analyze whether they realistically empower women or are merely adopted as embellishments to project the myth of women's status and power. The women police, originally institutionalized on the idea and the social conditions of sexual division of labor, remains typically women's jobs: fewer in number, very few in higher level, concentration on the "women's" duties with "proper" training. On the other hand, once entered the women achieve certain degree of self-confidence. Under the circumstance, it is hard to conclude that women police promises a direction toward gender equality, but it is the author's view that women police has some value in protecting women's well-being and in enhancing the image and role of women in the society and, thus, needs improvement.

Variability in Tropical Cyclone Climatology over North Indian Ocean during the Period 1891 to 2015

        Kasturi Singh,Jagabandhu Panda,Monalisa Sahoo,M. Mohapatra 한국기상학회 2019 Asia-Pacific Journal of Atmospheric Sciences Vol.55 No.2

Tropical cyclone (TC) prediction and impact of warming environment on cyclonic activity are one of the most popular research topics. Based on sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly variation, the period 1880–2015 is divided into pre-warming (PWP; during 1880–1946) and current warming (CWP; during 1947–2015) with negative and positive anomalies respectively. Based on data availability, the period 1891–2015 is emphasized for the analysis of variability in TC climatology. The Mann-Kendall test and Sen’s slope estimation indicates a clear decreasing trend in annual TS (total storms) and CS + SCS (cyclones and severe cyclones) frequency during CWP for NIO region and particularly Bay of Bengal (BOB) at 95% confidence level. However, the TS and CS + SCS frequencies were increasing during the PWP. TC activity over southern and northern BOB is decreasing sharply during CWP. Southern sector of BOB hosts mostly severe systems and middle sector most TCs. TC activity over the eastern sector of Arabian Sea shows considerable enhancement duringCWP. An increasing SST, surface wind, mid-tropospheric relative humidity and potential evaporation factor (PEF) are helpful in the formation of intensified storms during CWP. The activities during PWP were reverse compared to that of CWP. A large temperature anomaly difference between atmosphere and Ocean also perceived to play a key role in modulating the enhanced intensity of TCs during CWP. The SST range of 27.5 °C to 29.5 °C and supportive flow field is helping to enhance the middle and upper tropospheric moisture content; eventually, resulting in increased SST, PEF and relative humidity through a possible feedback mechanism.

Greater Political Representation for Women : The Case of India

Kasturi, Leela EWHA WOMANS UNIVERSITY PRESS 1998 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.4 No.4

Women's political participation has been marginal worldwide. In some countries, state-sponsored affirmative action to increase women's representation and participation in the public sphere has been attempted with varied results. This paper traces the history of the debate on such affirmative action for women in India from the early years of this century to the present day through colonial and post-colonial contexts. Women's groups have played a vital role in pressing for or refusing to agree to special measures. The contemporary Indian women's movement (that was resurrected with full force in the 1970s) supports the entry of women in reserved seats in decision-making bodies in order to give them a head start. Although there was little opportunity for this at the local level, legislation to ensure women's entry into one-third seats in state and national bodies has been obstructed. A long struggle lies ahead for Indian women.

      • Preparation of starch-based porous carbon electrode and biopolymer electrolyte for all solid-state electric double layer capacitor

Kasturi, Palanisamy Rupa,Ramasamy, Harivignesh,Meyrick, Danielle,Sung Lee, Yun,Kalai Selvan, Ramakrishnan Elsevier 2019 JOURNAL OF COLLOID AND INTERFACE SCIENCE - Vol.554 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>An ever-increasing demand for energy coupled with environmental pollution associated with conventional energy production continues to drive the search for alternative renewable energy storage solutions. In this regard, a high surface area (1841 m2 g−1), hierarchically porous (∼1.18 cm3 g−1) and self-inherited nitrogen (2.1 at.wt%) based activated carbon are obtained from <I>Artocarpus heterophyllus</I> seed derived starch as a result of ZnCl2 chemical activation. A flexible, conductive, thermally stable and bio-degradable biopolymer electrolyte film is prepared from <I>Manihot esculenta</I> starch powder. These eco-friendly hierarchically porous architectured carbon electrode and flexible biopolymer electrolytes are employed as significant components in a coin cell-based all-solid-state supercapacitor. The resulting device delivers a high specific capacitance of 240 Fg−1 at 0.5 mA with 97% coulombic efficiency over 2000 cycles. In addition, the device provided excellent specific energy (17 Wh kg−1) and specific power (3823 W kg−1). Interestingly, the starch derived biopolymer electrolyte film, when buried under soil, shows a favourable natural rate of degradation. Therefore, this fabricated electric double layer capacitor can be used as a promising device with little to no potential environmental harm.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Improved Survival of Cervical Cancer Patients in a Screened Population in Rural India

Jayant, Kasturi,Sankaranarayanan, Rengaswamy,Thorat, Ranjit V,Muwonge, Richard,Hingmire, Sanjay J,Panse, Nandkumar S,Shastri, Surendra S,Malvi, Sylla G,Nene, Bhagwan Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.11

Objectives: To describe the survival experience of cervix cancer patients in a screened rural population in India. Methods: Included 558 cervical cancer patients diagnosed in 2000-2013 in a cohort of 100,258 women invited for screening during 2000-2003. The primary end point was death from cervical cancer. We used the Kaplan-Meier method to estimate cumulative observed survival and Cox proportional hazards regression to assess the effect of patient characteristics on survival after diagnosis. Results: Of the 558 cases included, 143 (26%) and 114 (20%) were diagnosed in stages IA and IB respectively; 252 (45.2%) were dead, and 306 (54.8%) were alive at the last follow-up. The overall 5-year observed survival was 60.5%. The 5-year survival of stage IA patients was 95.1% and 5.3% for stage IV patients. All surgically treated stage IA patients, 94.1% of stage IB patients receiving intracavitary radiotherapy, 62% of stage IIB, 49% of stage III and 25% of stage IV patients receiving radiotherapy survived for 5 years. Conclusion: Higher 5-year survival in our study than elsewhere in India is due to the high proportion of early stage cancers detected by screening combined with adequate treatment, resulting into a favourable prognosis.

      • Human fall classification system for ceiling-mounted kinect depth images

Sowmya Kasturi,Kang-Hyun Jo 제어로봇시스템학회 2017 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2017 No.10

The number of elderly people living alone has been considerably increased over the past few years. Hence the research regarding Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) systems has been given significant importance to improve the quality of life for them. Falls have become one of the major health concern among elders. Many fall detection and classifications methods are being developed to provide a reliable solution. The proposed system presents a vision based human fall classification method to discriminate falls from non-fall events. The depth images from a ceiling mounted Kinect camera are considered in the proposed system to preserve privacy, reduce the influence of occlusion and complex cluttered background. Human silhouettes are obtained after background subtraction and shape based features are extracted. A binary Support Vector Machine(SVM) classifier fed with these features is used to classify the fall events from non-fall events. The proposed method was tested on a publicly available dataset and classifies falls from other actions with an accuracy of 93.04%.

Satish Kasturi,엄윤지,Sri Ramulu Torati,김철기 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.93 No.-

Herein, we have developed a novel high-resolution electrochemical biosensor for the detection of themicroRNA-122 (miRNA-122) using gold nanoparticles dotted reduced graphene oxide (rGO/Au)nanocomposite. The natural soapnut solution was used as a reducing agent for the synthesis of thenanocomposite. The naturally reduced rGO/Au nanocomposite was confirmed through variouscharacterization techniques. When rGO/Au nanocomposite was coated on to the gold electrode andchecked the electrochemical performance, the nanocomposite shows superior analytical performance. The probe DNA was anchored onto the binding sites of rGO/Au nanocomposite through thiol linker andrecognized the target miRNA-122. The developed rGO/Au based electrochemical biosensor demonstrateda linear response for various target miRNA-122 concentrations with a range from 10 mM to 10 pM and, with a detection limit of 1.73 pM. The developed biosensor also shows good stability and reproducibility, could be used for the detection of miRNA-122 and, also can be used for the basic research and clinicalstudies. Besides, the demonstrated rGO/Au nanocomposite-based sensing strategy could be used todetect various miRNA and protein biomarkers. Furthermore, the green synthesis approach could also beuseful for the synthesis of various nanomaterials and nanocomposites for various biomedicalapplications.
