      • Phosphor-Converted Light-Emitting Diodes of Preferential Color Properties

        Akvil? Zabili?t?-Karali?n?,Henrikas Dapkus,Pranci?kus Vitta,Andrius Petrulis,Art?ras ?ukauskas 한국색채학회 2017 AIC 2017 Jeju Vol.2017 No.10

Current development and optimization of LEDs spectral power distributions (SPDs) usually are focused on achieving the highest color fidelity in terms of CIE color rendering index CRI as well as the luminous efficacy for energy-saving reasons. Therefore we report on an alternative approach and innovative color rendering paradigm, where light sources, of preference color rendering SPD are presented to be competitive and even surpassing the high fidelity light sources in terms of subjective ranking. The designed prototype PrefLED lamp of 2900 K correlated color temperature (CCT), with moderate color saturation ability was developed and psychophysically validated by a side-by-side comparison with a halogen lamp (CCT = 2912K) under quasi-identical experimental conditions. PrefLED was found to be perceived as more bright, vivid and attractive, therefore preferred for offices, grocery stores, shopping malls and restaurants as well as kitchen or bathroom. However, the halogen lamp was claimed to be more peaceful and natural and preferred for illumination of sleeping room.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Adolescents with Asthma

        Cekic Sukru,Karali Zuhal,Cicek Fatih,Canitez Yakup,Sapan Nihat 대한의학회 2021 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.36 No.49

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting people at any age and there is limited information about the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on quality of life (QoL) in adolescents with asthma. In the present study, it was aimed to assess the attitudes of adolescents with asthma toward the COVID-19 pandemic and determine the effects of the pandemic on their QoL. Methods: In total, 125 adolescents with asthma and 98 healthy adolescents participated in the present study. The questionnaire form consisted of three parts. In the first part, all the participants were asked whether they complied with the protective measures against COVID-19. The second part included questions for measuring the participants’ level of concern about COVID-19, while the third part consisted of EUROHIS-QOL 8. Results: The patient and control groups were similar in terms of the female/male ratio (55/70 and 48/50, respectively) and mean participant age (14.6 ± 2 and 15.1 ± 1.65 years, respectively) (P = 0.459 and P = 0.062, respectively). The prevalence of COVID-19 in the patients (n = 2, 1.6%) was lower than that in the controls (n = 6, 6.1%); however, the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.142). The total EUROHIS-QOL score was significantly lower in the patients (31.2 ± 6.7) than in the controls (33.7 ± 4.4) (P < 0.001). The total QoL scores of asthmatic adolescents without other allergic disease (31.4 ± 6.7) was also lower than those of the controls (33.7 ± 4.4) (P = 0.009). Treatment disruption was significantly more common in patients who received subcutaneous immunotherapy (n = 20, 48.8%) than in those who did not (n = 8, 9.5%) (P < 0.001). Moreover, the patients had lower EUROHIS-QOL scores in the overall QoL, general health, finance, and home domains. Conclusion: Our results indicate that the mean QoL score of asthmatic adolescents during COVID-19 pandemic is lower than in the healthy population. Disruption in their treatment was most common in patients with asthma who were receiving subcutaneous immunotherapy.

Estimation and validation of maxwell stress of planar dielectric elastomer actuators

        Raj Kumar Sahu,Abhishek Saini,Dilshad Ahmad,Karali Patra,Jerzy Szpunar 대한기계학회 2016 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.30 No.1

In this paper, Maxwell stress of circular planar actuator at different applied voltages was estimated and then validated with the uniaxialcompression test of three different dielectric elastomers (VHB, silicone and natural rubber). Pelrine’s equation was revisited to estimateMaxwell stress which causes the actuation in the planar direction. More precise and accurate estimation of Maxwell stress could be madein this work by considering variation of dielectric constant with respect to frequency and pre-strain. Estimated Maxwell stress was validatedthrough (i) out-of-plane strain or thickness strain obtained from measured area strain considering constant volume deformation, and(ii) out-of-plane mechanical compressive test results. The estimated Maxwell stress agrees well with the corresponding experimentalcompressive stress values for different pre-straining cases considered in this work.

Evaluation and Management of Antrochoanal Polyps

Huseyin Yaman, MD,Suleyman Yilmaz, MD,Elif Karali, MD,Ender Guclu, MD,Ozcan Ozturk, MD 대한이비인후과학회 2010 Clinical and Experimental Otorhinolaryngology Vol.3 No.2

Antrochoanal polyps (ACPs) are benign polypoid lesions arising from the maxillary antrum and they extend into the choana. They occur more commonly in children and young adults, and they are almost always unilateral. The etiopathogenesis of ACPs is not clear. Nasal obstruction and nasal drainage are the most common presenting symptoms. The differential diagnosis should include the causes of unilateral nasal obstruction. Nasal endoscopy and computed tomography scans are the main diagnostic techniques, and the treatment of ACPs is always surgical. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and powered instrumentation during FESS for complete removal of ACPs are extremely safe and effective procedures. Physicians should focus on detecting the exact origin and extent of the polyp to prevent recurrence.

Influence of Omega-3 Fatty Acid-Rich Fish Oils on Hyperlipidemia: Effect of Eel, Sardine, Trout, and Cod Oils on Hyperlipidemic Mice

        Martha Kontostathi,Sofia Isou,Dimitrios Mostratos,Vassilios Vasdekis,Nikolaos Demertzis,Angeliki Kourounakis,Andreas Vitsos,Maria Kyriazi,Dimitrios Melissos,Charilaos Tsitouris,Evangelos Karalis,Lykou 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.7

Dyslipidemia is one of the most important cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (FAs), and especially omega-3 FAs, could significantly contribute to the management of dyslipidemia and the prevention of CVD. The anti-hyperlipidemic effect of selected fish oils (eel, sardine, trout, cod liver) was comparatively evaluated in a high fat diet (HFD)-fed mouse model. At the end of 30 days on the HFD, all animals were hyperlipidemic and were switched to a diet consisting of 90% standard rodent chow plus 10% of oil from eel, sardine, cod liver, or trout. At the end of 60 days on these diets, blood glucose, total blood cholesterol, triglycerides (TGs), and high density lipoprotein (HDL) were quantitated. All diets, except sardine and standard rodent chow, showed statistically significant decreases in blood glucose from day 30 to 90. Total blood cholesterol decreased in all diets except the HFD group, which was continued on this diet until the end of the study. Eel and cod liver oil diets showed significant decreases in TGs. All dietary groups showed a decrease in HDL, but only the trout and standard chow groups exhibited statistically significant decreases. The fish oils tested here for effects on hyperlipidemia vary in per cent of omega-3 FAs and omega-6/-3 FA ratios as determined by gas chromatography Overall, smoked eel was the best source of omega-3 FA, with a balance of omega-6 FA, that ameliorated HFD-induced mixed hyperlipidemia.
