Compliant universal joint with preformed flexible segments
Raşit Karakuş,Çağıl Merve Tanık 대한기계학회 2022 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.36 No.11
This paper introduces an original, fully compliant universal joint design. Many mechanisms with different dimensions are investigated. The proposed design is a single-piece compliant mechanism. The number of flexible segments is a design parameter determined as a function of transferred torque. The mechanism can be produced by additive manufacturing from polylactic acid and polypropylene. It is possible to produce the proposed design as a single piece of polypropylene by additive manufacturing and injection molding methods; thus, it has the advantage of ease in manufacturing. The proposed design's bending and torque transmission capacities are determined by applying analytical and numerical methods. Furthermore, a prototype was manufactured, and experiments were conducted. It is verified that the results of the experiments are consistent with theoretical approaches. The proposed fully compliant universal joint design has a great potential in the industry.
Effect of Acupressure on Primary Dysmenorrhea: Review of Experimental Studies
Aslı Karakuş Selçuk,Emre Yanikkerem 사단법인약침학회 2021 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.14 No.2
Primary dysmenorrhea is defined as cramping pain in the lower abdomen with no pelvic diseases, and it has a high prevalence in many countries. Acupressure is a widely used complementary treatment method for primary dysmenorrhea. This review examined experimental studies to determine the effects of acupressure on primary dysmenorrhea using the databases PubMed, Google Scholar, and CINAHL with the keywords “Acupressure” and “Dysmenorrhea”. There were 2227 records in the databases, and 330 articles were published between 1989 and March 2020. Experimental studies in the English language were reviewed according to the PRISMA guidelines. This review included 28 published studies that were assessed using the Jadad score for quality. The studies were categorized as studies of acupressure at the LR3 point (n = 4), at the SP6 point (n = 9), at auricular points (n = 5), at multiple points (n = 8), and with devices (n = 2). Moreover, studies of self-acupressure (n = 9) were identified. The studies demonstrated that acupressure could reduce menstrual symptoms, the severity and duration of menstrual pain, distress, and anxiety. Furthermore, it helped improve the quality of life and well-being of patients and provide psychological support and self-care. Acupressure is an inexpensive, easy-to-apply, and non-pharmacological treatment and is useful for reducing primary dysmenorrhea, and women can apply this method anywhere by themselves. However, high-quality randomized controlled trials with larger samples are necessary to establish the evidence for acupressure as an effective intervention.

Determination of LULC (land use/land cover) changes in urban planning studies is very important. However, LST (land surface temperature) and UHI (urban heat island) directly associated with LU changes are the parameters that should be considered in similar studies. Therefore, Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are commonly used for obtaining this kind of information. In this study, the relationship between LULC, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and LST in Sivas city center and its surroundings was studied by using Landsat satellite images from 1989 to 2015 and UHI intensity was also demonstrated. The results clearly show that the urban built-up areas and agricultural lands increased while barren land decreased over the study period. The changes in LSTcan be monitored depending on the construction materials such as the presence of green areas, the city’s unique geographical location and topography. Urban built-up and bare lands have the highest LST and the urban built-up surface temperature showed a fluctuating trend while the rural area temperature showed a tendency to decrease. The urban built-up areas increased, a positive UHI intensity was observed and also an urban heat island formation was determined.

This mixed-method study aimed to compare the academic achievements of students to their use of argument maps and concept maps in learning environments designed for argument-based instruction (ABI). The study was conducted during the spring term of the academic year 2018–2019 with the students of three sections of grade six instructed by the same teacher at a secondary school in the province of Kastamonu. Before the study began, one of the participating sections was randomly designated as the control group, while the other two were assigned as the experimental group. The control group students undertook research interrogation-based activities during lessons and individually reported activities appropriate for the ABI student template for each activity. The experimental group students handled ABI applications. In addition, one section of the experimental group prepared concept maps, while the other section made argument maps. The 5-week study was accomplished during the instruction of the “sound and its properties” unit of the curriculum. The data were acquired via a pre- and post-administration of the unit-based success test to measure academic success. Further, semi-structured interviews were conducted to ascertain the opinions of students vis-à-vis the pedagogy. The obtained quantitative data were analyzed using the ANCOVA analysis via the SPSS software. The qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews were examined by the creation of themes, codes, and frequencies. The experimental group using argument maps or concept maps in addition to ABI applications revealed signifcant outcomes in terms of academic achievements. Further, students expressed the belief that argument and concept maps helped them learn and remember the topic.
3D virtual learning environments in education: a meta-review
I. Reisoğlu,B. Topu,R. Yılmaz,T. Karakuş Yılmaz,Y. Göktaş 서울대학교 교육연구소 2017 Asia Pacific Education Review Vol.18 No.1
The aim of this study is to investigate recent empirical research studies about 3D virtual learning environments. A total of 167 empirical studies that involve the use of 3D virtual worlds in education were examined by meta-review. Our findings show that the “Second Life” platform has been frequently used in studies. Among the reviewed papers, case study designs and quasi-experimental studies were more common. Sample sizes were below 100 for most studies. 3D virtual learning environments are mainly designed for learning support, simulation, and game. Language learning and science have been the most extensively studied topics. Collaborative and exploration-based learning strategies have been used most frequently in 3D virtual learning environments. Presence, satisfaction, communication skills, and engagement were examined as emotional and cognitive achievements.

In this study, we introduce the adjoint curves of framed curves. We examine some characterizations of adjoint curve of a framed curve. In addition, we give the conditions for framed curves and adjoint curves to be Bertrand and Mannheim curves. Then, we introduce adjoint curves of Frenet-type framed curves and give ruled surfaces related to adjoint curves. Finally, we create normal and binormal surfaces of the framed adjoint curves and obtain some characterizations of these surfaces and we support by the results with figures.
Analysis of Plant Growth and Biochemical Parameters in Amsonia orientalis after in vitro Salt Stress
Arda Acemi,Yonca Duman,Yonca Yüzügüllü Karakuş,Yasemin Özdener Kömpe,Fazıl Özen 한국원예학회 2017 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.58 No.3
This study aimed to better understand the limited natural distribution of the endangered ornamental plantAmsonia orientalis Decne. by focusing on salt stress, a common limiting factor of plant growth. Plants weresubjected to in vitro salt stress at concentrations between 25 and 150 mM. In general, shoot and root lengths, rootnumber, and total protein, chlorophyll a and carotenoid content were negatively influenced at NaCl concentrationsabove 25 mM. Hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde and proline content all gradually increased with increasing saltconcentration. Activity levels of the antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase(SOD) were all at their maximum in plants cultured in medium containing 50 mM NaCl. Compared to controlcultures, an overall upward trend in POD activity was observed with increasing salt concentration, while the activitylevels of SOD and CAT increased at lower concentrations but were limited at elevated concentrations of NaCl. These results suggest that A. orientalis prefers soils with no or very low salt but can tolerate NaCl up to aconcentration of 50 mM.

Cisplatin (CDDP), one of the most active cytotoxic agents against cancer, has adverse side effects, such as nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity. The present study was designed to investigate the potential protective effect of pomegranate seed extract (PSE) against oxidative stress caused by CDDP injury of the kidneys and liver by measuring tissue biochemical and antioxidant variables and immunohistochemically testing caspase-3–positive cells. Twenty-four Sprague–Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups: control; CDDP: injected intraperitoneally with CDDP (7 mg/kg body weight, single dose); PSE: treated for 15 consecutive days by gavage with PSE (300 mg/kg per day); and PSE+CDDP: treated by gavage with PSE 15 days after a single injection of CDDP. The degree of protection against CDDP injury afforded by PSE was evaluated by determining the levels of malondialdehyde as a measure of lipid peroxidation. The levels of glutathione and activities of glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, and superoxide dismutase were estimated from liver and kidney homogenates; the liver and kidney were also histologically examined. PSE elicited a significant protective effect toward liver and kidney by decreasing the level of lipid peroxidation; elevating the levels of glutathione S-transferase; and increasing the activities of glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, and superoxide dismutase. These biochemical observations were supported by immunohistochemical findings and suggested that PSE significantly attenuated nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity by the way of its antioxidant, radical-scavenging, and antiapoptotic effects. This PSE extract could be used as a dietary supplement in patients receiving chemotherapy medications.
