Linking and Intrusive r in English a Correspondence Account

Kang, Seok Keun 대한언어학회 1998 언어학 Vol.6 No.2

Kang, Seok-keun. 1998. Linking and Intrusive r in English: a Correspondence Account. Linguistics, 6-2, 243-262. The purpose of this paper is to reconsider linking and intrusive r in English. Accounting for the phenomenon within the framework of Correspondence Theory (McCarthy and Prince 1993, 1995), I show that linking and intrusive r can be interpreted as glide formation, and that once given this assumption, the phenomenon can be accounted for in a unified, satisfactory way in terms of a ranking of constraints. An optimality theoretic account of the status of onglides in American Engish

        Seok-Keun Kang 한국음운론학회 2001 음성·음운·형태론 연구 Vol.7 No.1

Kang, Seok-keun. 2001. An optimality theoretic account of the status of onglides in American English. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 7.1. 1-20. This paper discusses the status of the onglides /w/ and /y/ in English. Specifically focussing on the different behaviors between the two glides in postconsonantal position, I show that compared with previous rule-based analyses, a constraint-based theory can provide a better account of the phenomena. To this end, I assume that no syllable structures are present in input. Given this assumption, we can account for the distributions of the onglides /w/ and /y/ in a satisfactory way by making use of some constraints on surface representations.(Wonkwang University)

A Comparative Study on Accentual Patterns between Middle Korean and the Current Jeju Korean

        Seok-Han Kang 한국언어학회 2015 언어 Vol.40 No.1

Kang, Seok-Han. 2015. A Comparative Study on Accentual Patterns between Middle Korean and the current Jeju Korean. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 40-1, 1-18. The study reports that bi- and tri- syllabic nouns in the Jeju dialect of Korean keeps phonetic features of Middle Korean tone types, whereas no relation was found in the mono-syllabic nouns. The experimental result on 104 nouns which classified by following Middle Korean tone types implies the importance of syllable structure in the tonal change. In this study, the accentual patterns of Jeju Korean follows those of Kyungnam dialect of Korean;low tones change into high accentual patterns, high tones into low patterns, and falling tones into high patterns. But the change occurs in the phonetic level, not in the phonology, in which the H accent could be realized as higher F0 and longer duration. This means that the phonological tone patterns change into the phonetic accent in multi-syllable words. In this study, we can find some possible relationship between Jeju Korean and Middle Korean. It implies that Middle Korean was not a real tonal language. (Konkuk University)

An optimality theoretic account of phonological opacity in English

        Seok-Keun Kang 한국음운론학회 2000 음성·음운·형태론 연구 Vol.6 No.2

Kang, Seok-keun. 2000. An optimality theoretic account of phonological opacity in English. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 6.2. 307-332. Since the inception of Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993), opacity has been one of the most contentious issues in the theory. In this paper, considering palatalization and spirantization in English which show opacity effects, I claim that neither a traditional OT analysis nor a sympathy analysis can provide a satisfactory account of them. In order to account for the opacity effects, I assume that suffixes can impose phonological restrictions on the base to which they are attached. Given some morpho-phonological constraints which regulate the relationship between suffixes and the words, we can account for the opacity effects in a satisfactory way. (Wonkwang University)

Rule Ordering Revisited: An Optimality Theoretic Account

        Seok-keun Kang 한국음운론학회 1997 음성·음운·형태론 연구 Vol.3 No.-

Kang, Seok-keun. 1997. Rule Ordering Revisited: An Optimality Theoretic Account. Studies in Phonetics, Phonology and Morphology 3, 25-42. The purpose of this paper is to reconsider obstruent neutralization, nasalization, /I/-nasalization and /n/-lateralization in Korean within the framework of Optimality Theory and to explore constraints and their hierarchies in an account of the interactions among the rules. I show that the interactions can be straightforwardly accounted for in terms of some ranked, violable constraints without recourse to extrinsic rule ordering and other stipulations which were indispensable in earlier analyses (e.g., Kim-Renaud 1974 and K-H Kim 1987). Doing this, I also show that the Obligatory Contour Principle can be dispensed with in Optimality Theory. (Wonkwang University)

A Correspondence Account of the Alternations of English Nasal-Final Prefixes

Kang, Seok Keun 대한언어학회 1999 언어학 Vol.7 No.3

Seok-keun Kang. 1999. A Correspondence Account of the Alternations of English Nasal-Final Prefixes. Linguistics 7-3, 157-174. The purpose of this paper is to reconsider the phonology of English nasal-final prefixes within the framework of Optimality Theory, especially in terms of correspondence. In this paper, I show that compared with previous analyses employing rules and their extrinsic orderings, a constraint-based approach can give a better account of the phenomenon. In order to do this, following Kenstowicz(1996), I posit a constraint of Uniform Exponence. In particular I assume that the candidates for the allomorph of a prefix are evaluated so as to minimize allomorphic difference in the realization of the morpheme itself. I show that given these assumptions, we can account for assimilation of the prefix-final nasals in a unified way by appropriately ranking the Uniform Exponence constraint among the other constraints. Effects of Language, Age and English Listening Level on Voicing Perception of English Final Stops

        Seok-Han Kang 한국언어학회 2006 언어 Vol.31 No.2

Kang, Seok-Han. 2006. Effects of Language, Age and English Listening Level on Voicing Perception of English Final Stops. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 31-2, 187-205. To understand the preceptual change pattern during L2 learning, this study examined the identification correctness of word-final stops and cue robustness for the unit intervals in light of background language, age, and English listening level. The 4 groups of Native Speakers of English, Korean College Students of High Listening Achievement, Korean College Students of Low Listening Achievement, and Korean Elementary Students took part in the experiments. Tokens of /dæp, dæb, dæt, dæd, dæk, dæg/ were extracted and modified into experimental signals composed of two digits (voiced-1, voiceless-0) by following the temporal intervals. In the first experiment of identification correctness of final stops, Native Speakers of English showed almost 100% correctness rate in both environments, while those of Korean showed 70% to 95% correctness rate depending on environments. In this test, neither age nor the listening level influenced significantly the voicing correctness to Korean subjects. In the second experiment of the cue robustness, the group of Korean Elementary students, unlike Korean College students, showed the similar perceptual pattern with that of native English speakers in the released environment. This result strongly suggested that the phonological system of the native language as well as the psycho-linguistic pattern of the universal language deeply influenced L2 perceptual system. Some Phonological Phenomena in Korean : an Optimality Theoretic Account

Kang, Seok Keun 대한언어학회 1995 언어학 Vol.3 No.-

Kang, Seok-keun (1995) Some Phonological Phenomena in Korean: an Optimality Theoretic Account. Linguistics vol. 3. The purpose of this paper is to reconsider obstruent neutralization and consonant cluster simplification in Korean within the framework of Optimality Theory. Considering the interaction of the Basic Syllable Structure Constraints proposed by Prince and Smolensky (1993), first, I claim that in Korean, ONS and -COD are dominated by FILL and PARSE. Second, I consider some theoretical devices for handling obstruent neutralization and consonant cluster simplification in an Optimality Theory framework, and assert that these phonological phenomena can be accounted for in a unified way in terms of a ranking of constraints.

In content-base video data retrieval, the detection for scene change is needed. Color histogram approaches are generally used. Color histogram approaches are simple and more robust to object and camera movements but they ignore the spatial information and fail when two different frames have similar histograms. We propose a new algorithm to use color histogram and entropy to enhance the false-positive occurred by brightness variation and the miss by similar color histogram. At the experiments, it is more robust to brightness variation and have spatial information.
