Electrochemomechanical strain (ECMS) under tensile stresses up to 5 MPa in polypyrrole films doped with dodecylbenzene sulfonate (PPy/DBS) has been studied in aqueous LiCl electrolytes. The ECMS of about 2% showed cation driven behavior and decreased with increasing the tensile stress. At higher tensile stresses, a nonlinear deformation against the injected charges was observed, as well as creeping associated with conformation change, slipping and/or breaking of polymer chains. After the removal of high tensile stresses, the creeping was recovered to some extent. The results were discussed in terms of the relaxation of anisotropic strain and memory effect introduced during the creeping. The conversion efficiency from electrical to mechanical energies was 0.04 % being the maximum at around 3 MPa.

Electrical properties at the nanointerfaces of head-to-tail coupled poly(3-hexylthiophene), PHT and metals (Au, Al) in sandwichtype Al/PHT/Au diodes have been investigated using a nanomanipulator with the potential probing tip. It has been directly foundthat the highly insulating layer and the appreciable contact resistance are formed at Al/PHT with the thickness of several tensnanometer and PAT/Au, respectively. The bias dependence of the interface resistances at Al/PHT shows the origin of rectication. Ithas also been found that the interface resistance at PAT/Au is unexpectedly large, though the currentvoltage behavior is ohmic. The results indicate the contact resistances between PHT and metals at the nanometric region are important factors to determine the diode performance.

Potential profiles of an Al/poly(3-hexylthiophene), PHT film/Au diode through Al to Au electrodes have been measured directly using a micro-manipulator with a potential probe tip. A steep potential cliff is observed at the interface of Al/PHT for negative biases to Au against Al, indicating the existence of a depletion layer with higher resistance than that of the PHT bulk region. For a positive bias above +1 V to Au, the interface resistance at Al/PHT decreases markedly, resulting in a forward current in the rectification diode. It is found that the contact resistance of PHT/Au is unexpectedly large in spite of the ohmic behavior. The effect of light on the depletion layer is also studied. It is stressed that the contact resistances of PHT and metals are significantly important and determine the performance of organic electronic devices.

A conducting polymer film of N-amino substituted pyrrole monomer has been prepared for covalent immobilization of enzyme for biosensing applications, illustrated by tyrosinase (PPO).The tyrosinase enzyme retains its bioactivity when being immobilized on N-substituted pyrrole polymer film by covalent bonding. The enzyme electrode was characterized by UV.Vis and infrared spectroscopy.Phenolic compounds were quantitatively estimated by the direct electrochemical reduction of enzymatically liberated quinone species at 0.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The results of amperometric response measurements conducted on enzyme electrode show sensitivity of 57.6, 71.4 and 45.8 mAM1cm2 and a linear response range of 1.8.170.2, 1.3.110.1 and 2.1.168 lM for phenol, catechol and p-cresol, respectively. The biosensor exhibits a lowest detection limit of 0.9, 0.7 and 1.1 lM, for phenol, catechol and p-cresol, respectively and a period of stable sensitivity of 3 months at 4.5 C.

Frictional problems in superconducting magnets are related to the stability and reliability of the magnets, because frictional heating causes quench of the manger and the frictional resistance determines the limit of the shear force at the contacting sufaces. In addition to these problems, magnet structural materials are exposed with neutron and γ-ray in Deutrium- Tritum type fusion reactor, so that it is required to investigate the frictional behavior for irradiated magnet structural materials at cryogenic temperatures. In this study, we investigated the influence of γ-irradiated MoS2 coating film and GFRP AT 4.2 K 77K AND 293 K under fretting conditions.

A potential profile along the channel in a conducting polymer field effect transistor (FET) has been measured directly using micro-manipulator with potential probing tip. The FET was fabricated with a head.tail coupled poly(3-hexylthiophene) as the channel semiconductor on a SiO2/n-Si substrate. The potential profile along the channel shows almost flat potential being equal to the source until near the drain. Then the channel potential abruptly increases near the drain, which has been observed for both linear and saturation regions in the drain current.drain voltage curves. The results are discussed in terms of carrier injection at the drain electrode and pinch off characteristics.
