The impact of nutrition literacy on the food habits among young adults in Turkey

Kalkan, Indrani The Korean Nutrition Society 2019 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.13 No.4

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Youth is the crucial stage between childhood and adulthood during which an individual acquires new behavior and practices including dietary habits, that may be influenced by his peers, social circle, nutrition knowledge level and other factors. The increase in awareness of young adults is of special importance from the perspective of health and prevention of obesity related chronic diseases. To measure the nutrition literacy level of university students using the Turkish version of Adolescent Nutrition Literacy Scale (ANLS). We evaluated their food habits using the Adolescent Food Habit Checklist (AFHC) tool and analysed it, if the eating habits were affected by nutrition literacy level. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on randomly selected 276 students studying in the Faculty of Health Sciences of Istanbul Aydin University, Turkey. Data was collected by means of ANLS and AFHC tools by face to face interview method. SPSS statistical sofware (IBM SPSS Statistics 19) was used to analyse the obtained data. RESULTS: Participants comprised of 47.1% males and 52.9% females with mean age of $20.0{\pm}1.60years$. Mean body mass index (BMI) was determined as $22.4{\pm}3.76$ ($23.6{\pm}3.63$ males $21.3{\pm}3.57$ females). Functional, interactive and critical nutritional literacy scores for male participants were $22.49{\pm}5.71$, $17.45{\pm}4.84$, and $28.28{\pm}7.13$ respectively (total $64.98{\pm}10.15$). For females the values were $24.66{\pm}5.13$, $20.17{\pm}4.28$, and $32.20{\pm}5.65$ (total $69.72{\pm}8.59$) respectively. For all the three sub-categories of nutrition literacy, the scores acquired by females were significantly higher than males (P < 0.001). In the AFHC tool, the mean score acquired by males were $9.26{\pm}4.18$ whereas for females it was $10.37{\pm}3.40$ significantly higher as compared to males (P = 0.007). CONCLUSION: The food habits of female participants were better than males; in accordance with their nutrition literacy status. It may be concluded that food habits are influenced by nutrition literacy and therefore stress much be given to increase the nutrition awareness among children youth as well as adults.

Deflections of reinforced concrete beams with transverse openings of different geometries

        Ilker Kalkan,Ece Ceylan,Saruhan Kartal,Mehmet Baran 국제구조공학회 2021 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.80 No.3

The present study pertains to the in-plane bending deflections of reinforced concrete beams with multiple regular transverse openings along the beam length. The total deflections in the beam were obtained from bending deflections and the additional deflections from the Vierendeel panel action. The accuracy of the deflection estimates from the proposed formula were observed to depend on the opening geometry. Among different geometries, the presence of rectangular and parallelogram web openings resulted in the experimental deflections to deviate more considerably from the analytical values due to the stress concentrations around the corners of the openings. Consequently, a multiplier was incorporated into the deflection formula to account for the opening geometry. The new revised formula was found to generate analytical load-deflection curves in close agreement with the experimental ones and service-load deflections close to the FEA values of beams with varying amount of tension reinforcement. The diagonal reinforcement around the openings and the short stirrups in the posts and chords increased the accuracy of the analytical deflection estimates by reducing the undesired additional deformations in the beam due to the poorer integrity of the posts and chords around the openings.

Investigation of earthquake angle effect on the seismic performance of steel bridges

Ebru Kalkan,Ahmet C. Altunışık 국제구조공학회 2016 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.22 No.4

In this paper, it is aimed to evaluate the earthquake angle influence on the seismic performance of steel highway bridges. Upper-deck steel highway bridge, which has arch type load bearing system with a total length of 216 m, has been selected as an application and analyzed using finite element methods. The bridge is subjected to 1992 Erzincan earthquake ground motion components in nineteen directions whose values range between 0 to 90 degrees, with an increment of 5 degrees. The seismic weight is calculated using full dead load plus 30% of live load. The variation of maximum displacements in each directions and internal forces such as axial forces, shear forces and bending moments for bridge arch and deck are attained to determine the earthquake angle influence on the seismic performance. The results show that angle of seismic input motion considerably influences the response of the bridge. It is seen that maximum arch displacements are obtained at X, Y and Z direction for 0°, 65° and 5°, respectively. The results are changed considerably with the different earthquake angle. The maximum differences are calculated as 57.06%, 114.4% and 55.71% for X, Y and Z directions, respectively. The maximum axial forces, shear forces and bending moments are obtained for bridge arch at 90°, 5° and 0°, respectively. The maximum differences are calculated as 49.12%, 37.37% and 51.50%, respectively. The maximum shear forces and bending moments are obtained for bridge deck at 0°. The maximum differences are calculated as 49.67%, and 49.15%, respectively. It is seen from the study that the variation of earthquake angle effect the structural performance of highway bridges considerably. But, there is not any specific earthquake angle of incidence for each structures or members which increases the value of internal forces of all structural members together. Each member gets its maximum value of in a specific angle of incidence.

Effect of Shrinkage Restraint on Deflections of Reinforced Self-compacting Concrete Beams

Ilker Kalkan,이종한 대한토목학회 2013 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.17 No.7

This paper presents the results of a study aimed at investigating the effects of restrained shrinkage on the in-plane deflection behavior of reinforced beams cast with self-compacting concrete. The load-deflection data from the tests on two sets of heavilyreinforced concrete beams were analyzed. The first set of beams was made with self-compacting concrete while conventionally vibrated concrete with shrinkage reducing admixture was used in the second set. It was found out that the first set underwent shrinkage cracking at early ages and this cracking caused the member responses of the beams to be closer to the fully-cracked response at the initial stages of loading. The second set of beams was found to have initial responses approximate to the uncracked response and the maximum shrinkage restraint stresses were calculated to be in the order of 20-40% of the modulus of rupture of concrete. The maximum shrinkage-induced restraint stress expressions of the AS 3600-2001, AS 3600-2009, EC2, and CSA A23.3-04 codes were found to underestimate the restraint stresses developed in the first set, yet the estimates from code solutions were in closer agreement with the experimental values in the second set.

Comparison of Pain between First and Second Operated Eyelids after Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Mehmet Icoz(Mehmet Icoz ),Bilge Tarım(Bilge Tarım ),Sule Gokcek Gurturk Icoz(Sule Gokcek Gurturk Icoz ),Emine Kalkan Akcay(Emine Kalkan Akcay ) 대한안과학회 2023 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.37 No.3

Purpose: To evaluate and compare intraoperative pain during upper eyelid blepharoplasty (UEB) between on first and second operated eyelids. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, the patients were divided into two groups, with group 1 representing 40 patients whose surgery was first started on the right and group 2 representing the other 40 patients who started surgery on the left first. UEB was performed to all patients by the same surgeon under the same and equal amount of local anesthesia. Degree of pain felt during surgery on first and second operated eyelid was evaluated with the visual analoge scale (VAS) and Wong-Baker Facial Pain Expression Scale (WBFPES) of all patients immediately after surgery and was compared using paired t-test. Results: There were 20 female and 20 male patients in both groups. In group 1, the VAS value was 2.8 ± 1.5 and WBFPES value was 2.7 ± 1.6 UEB in the first operated eyelid; the VAS value was 4.1 ± 1.8 and WBFPES value was 3.9 ± 1.8 UEB in the second operated eyelid. A significant difference was found between pains felt during first and second operated eyelid UEB regarding VAS and WBFPES values in group 1 (p = 0.003 and p = 0.002, respectively). In group 2, the VAS value was 1.9 ± 1.0 and WBFPES value was 2.0 ± 1.0 UEB in the first operated eyelid; the VAS value was 3.0 ± 1.5 and WBFPES value was 2.8 ± 1.6 UEB in the second operated eyelid. A significant difference was found between pains felt during first operated and second operated eyelid UEB regarding VAS and WBFPES values in group 2 (p = 0.009 and p = 0.005, respectively). Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to evaluate which eyelid is more painful during surgery in UEB. Patients tend to feel more pain during surgery on the second operated eyelid. Therefore, surgeons should consider using local anesthetics with more volume or longer duration in the second operating eyelid in light of this information and patients should be given detailed information about pain.

Strengthening of reinforced concrete beams with epoxy-bonded perforated steel plates

        Aykac, Sabahattin,Kalkan, Ilker,Uysal, Ali Techno-Press 2012 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.44 No.6

Although being one of the most popular strengthening techniques in reinforced concrete beams, the use of steel plates bonded to the soffit raises problems of ductility. This study aims at investigating the influence of the use of perforated steel plates instead of solid steel plates on the ductility of reinforced concrete beams. A total of nine reinforced concrete beams were tested. In addition to an unplated beam, eight beams with perforated steel plates of two different thicknesses (3 mm and 6 mm) were subjected to monotonic loading. Effect of bonding the plates to the beams with anchor bolts and with additional side plates bonded to the sides of the beam with and without anchors is also investigated. The use of bolts in addition to epoxy was found to greatly contribute to the ductility and energy absorption capacity of the beams, particularly in specimens with thick plates (6 mm) and the use side plates in addition to the bottom plate was found to be ineffective in increasing the ductility of a concrete beam unless the side plates are attached to the beam with anchors bolts. The thickness of the plate was found to have little effect on the bending rigidity of the beam.

The Surgical Management of Traumatic C6-C7 Spondyloptosis

Keskin, Fatih,Kalkan, Erdal,Erdi, Fatih The Korean Neurosurgical Society 2013 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.53 No.1

A case of traumatic spondyloptosis of the cervical spine at the C6-C7 level is reported. The patient was treated succesfully with a anterior-posterior combined approach and decompression. The patient had good neurological outcome after surgery. A-51-year-old female patient was transported to our hospital's emergency department after a vehicle accident. The patient was quadriparetic (Asia D, MRC power 4/5) with severe neck pain. Plain radiographs, computerize tomography and spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed C6-7 spondyloptosis and C5, C6 posterior element fractures. Gardner-Wells skeleton traction was applied. Spinal alignment was reachived by traction and dislocation was decreased to a grade 1 spondylolisthesis. Then the patient was firstly operated by anterior approach. Anterior stabilization and fusion was firstly achieved. Seven days after first operation the patient was operated by a posterior approach. The posterior stabilization and fusion was achieved. Postoperative lateral X-rays and three-dimensional computed tomography showed the physiological realignment and the correct screw placements. The patient's quadriparesis was improved significantly. Subaxial cervical spondyloptosis is a relatively rare clinical entity. In this report we present a summary of the clinical presentation, the surgical technique and outcome of this rarely seen spinal disorder.
