Phytochemical and pharmacological evaluation of the flowers of Sarcostemma brevistigma Wight

Shade-dried flowers of Sarcostemma brevistigma Wight Syn (SBF) belonging to Asclepiadaceae yielded a rare flavonol glycoside viz., Quercetin 5a prenyl, 3-O-glucosyl, 7-O-(4c-p-coumaroyl) neohesperidoside which were characterized based on chemical and spectral (including 2D NMR) studies. The ethyl acetate fraction of alcoholic concentrate (test sample) of flowers of this plant (SBF) was evaluated for its hepatoprotective and inhibition of lipid peroxidation activities to investigate the scientific basis of the traditional uses. The oral administration in varying doses viz., 125 and 250 mg/kg of aqueous suspension of SBF to rats for 7 days produced significant (P < 0.01) hepatoprotective effect comparable to that of standard drug silymarin. The SBF afforded good hepatoprotection against CCl4 induced elevation levels of serum marker enzymes, serum bilirubin and liver weight. The free radical scavenging effects of SBF and flavonol glycoside (SA) were assigned by Fe2+/ascorbate induction method (in vitro), which revealed the inhibition of lipid peroxidation. The SBF and SA showed prominent anti-lipid peroxidation activity (IC50 about ~ 180 mg/ml and 11.0 mg/ml respectively), which was comparable to standard drug curcumin (IC50 about ~ 8.25 mg/ml). Thus the hepatoprotective activity of SB could be correlated to the free radical scavenging property of the flavonol glycoside. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of chloroform extract of S. trilobatum (CST) on 7,12-dimethyl benz (a)anthracene (DMBA) induced skin carcinogenesis and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells (EAC) induced solid tumor in mice. CST was obtained by exhaustive extraction with chloroform. Skin carcinogenesis was induced in Swiss albino mice by applying DMBA, while solid tumor was induced by intramuscular injection of EAC cells. For preventing skin carcinogenesis, animals were treated with CST (5 mg/kg body weight/100 μl acetone) before and after DMBA application for 15 days. Solid tumor was treated with CST (400 mg/kg body weight) prophylatically and post inoculation. After the experimental period, several anti tumor parameters and antioxidant status of skin of treated and control animals were determined. Solid tumor progression was determined by measuring the tumor diameter for 36 days. CST was sub-fractionated with different solvents and each fraction was subjected to HPLC-MS. HPLC-MS analysis showed the presence of two components with possible anti-cancer activity viz. 3,5,7 trimethoxy flavone and vitexin per-O-acetyl. The biochemical results showed that CST treatment reduced the number of skin papillomas, tumor incidence as well as modulated the antioxidant status of the skin in a beneficial way. CST reduced the solid tumor volume induced by EAC significantly. In conclusion, CST with its biologically active components may be used as a part of cancer treatment.

In this paper, author describe the simulation results concerning the period doubling bifurcation route to chaos of DC/DC boost converter under current mode control to show that it is common phenomena on switching regulator when parameters are improperly chosen or continuously varied beyond the ensured region by system designer. Bifurcation diagrams of periodic orbits of inductor current and capacitor voltage of DC/DC boost converter are plotted with sampled data at moment of each clock pulse causing switching on DC/DC boost converter studied on this paper is modelled by its state space equations as per switching condition under continuous conduction mode. Current reference signal and capacitance are chosen as the bifurcation parameters and those are vaned in step for iterative calculation to find bifurcation points of periodic orbits of state variables.

Off-vertical axis rotator was developed to differentiate each function of the canal and otolith in the vestibular system and evaluate subjective symptoms during postural change. Eye movement induced by various types of rotation was measured in normal subjects. Nystagmus with fast component corresponding to direction of rotation was occurred by sinusoidal earth vertical axis rotation, and the gain of eye movement in vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) was lower than in visual vestibuloocular reflex (VVOR) and higher than in visual fixed vestibuloocular reflex (VFX). Degree of dizziness was proportioned to degree of gain. Off-vertical axis rotation was produced severe dizziness than earth vertical axis rotation. These results suggest stimulation of the otolith should be minimized to make a stable and pleasant condition in work and travel.

Steroid receptors have been sugessted to play an important role in the synthesis of DNA and the growth of cells. Authors have estimated the concentrations of estrogen and progesteron receptors using the ELISA method, and the proliferative potential using immunohistochemical stain with the monoclonal antibody to bromodeoxyuridine(BUdR) in 46 human brain tumors(21 meningiomas, 12 astrocytomas, 7 schwannoma. 4 medullobastomas, and 2 pituitary tumors). In our studies, the concentration of receptors had no relationship with age and sex of patients, and tumor type, and the proliferative potential of the individual tumors.

Percutaneous radiofrequency rhizotomy of the gasserian ganglion was performed in 150 patients. The average age of group was 55 years, and woman made up 61.1 percent of the patients. The pain was localized on the right in 58.7%. The most common divisions of the trigeminal nerve involved was the maxillary and mandibular divisions. The results of radiofrequency rhizotomy has been very satisfactory in 80.7%. Recurrant rate has been observed in 14.7%. Postoperative complications was noticed in 30%, but most were subsided within 2 weeks. Our results indicate that the radiofrequency rhizotomy is an excellant method of the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia in the selected cases Therefore we suggest that the rediofrequency rhizotomy is initially the procedure of choice for the trigeminal neuralgia but in recur or no response cases to radiofrequency rhizotomy, microvascular decompression is the second choice of treatment of the tngeminal neuralgia.
