<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The Human Genome Project has generated nucleotide sequences from an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 genes, only a small fraction of which have a known role. Nucleotide sequence information alone is insufficient to predict gene function. One of the most powerful ways of revealing gene function, as demonstrated in bacteria, worms, yeast, and flies, is to generate mutations and characterize them at both the phenotypic and the molecular levels. Given the physiological and anatomical parallels between mouse and human, genotype–phenotype relationships established in mice can be extrapolated to human syndromes. A new method is described for functional genetic analyses in the mouse that uses loxP/Cre engineering to generate coat color-tagged large deletions. The haploid regions can then be dissected by mutagenesis with<I>N</I>-ethyl-<I>N</I>-nitrosourea in phenotype-driven screens to obtain functional information on genes in any desired region of the mouse genome.</P>
Abnormal returns around mergers and acquisitions for US firms
( Justice Kyei-mensah ) 한양대학교 경제연구소 2021 JOURNAL OF ECONOMIC RESEARCH Vol.26 No.1
We examine the cumulative abnormal returns (CARs) surrounding merger announcements for NYSE, NASDAQ and AMEX-listed firms. We estimate the Fama-French-Carhart four-factor CAPM under both the standard OLS method and the asymmetric GARCH(1,1)-in-mean, hereafter GJR-GARCH-M. The statistical significance of the CARs is determined using the adjusted Boehmer et al. (1991) t-statistics modified by Kolari and Pynnonen (2010). The GJR-GARCH-M method provides stronger support for the view that shareholders of both acquirers and targets gain around merger announcements. To illustrate, at the announcement date, the CAR of 0.233% is insignificant under the OLS for acquirers, whereas, the CAR of 0.386% is significant under the GJR-GARCH-M method. The gain of 0.386% is sizable supporting the neoclassic theory of M&A. Small and low liquidity acquirers and targets exhibit larger CARs than their medium counterparts. Cash and mixed payments are associated with significant CARs but not stock payments.

Background: Emergency workers such as firefighters are cataloged within the most demanding and injurious professions globally. Considering the health and safety implications in firefighting, a lot of research needs to be conducted to examine how firefighters’ task characteristics and their work demand influence the development of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). This study therefore examines how the task characteristics of firefighters moderates the relationship between their work demand and the development of WMSDs. Methods: Convenient sampling was employed to select 320 firefighters in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression. Results: The findings revealed that work demand and task characteristics have significant positive effects on WMSDs. Again, the task characteristics of firefighters moderates the relationship between their work demand and WMSDs. Conclusion: Since the study shows that task characteristics influences the relationship between work demand and WMSDs, it is vital for managers to constantly modify the nature of tasks performed by and work demand of emergency workers to minimize the development of WMSDs and other industrial health complications.

<P>Manganese dioxide (MnO2)-vulcan carbon (VC)@silver (Ag) (core@shell) nanocomposites were synthesized through a simple wet chemical method without using hazardous organic reagents, polymeric micelles, templates or catalysts. The synthesized MnO2-VC@Ag exhibited a MnO2-VC core and Ag shell, and the thickness of shell was found to be 23 nm. The obtained diffraction patterns confirmed that the prepared nanocomposite consists of tetragonal and face-centred cubic structures of MnO2 and Ag nanostructures, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry and amperometric techniques were adopted to electrochemically characterize the MnO2-VC@Ag nanospheres for hydrazine oxidation in phosphate buffer solution. Under the optimized conditions, the fabricated sensor exhibited a good electrochemical performance toward hydrazine oxidation, offering a broad linearity of 0.1 to 350 mM, with a relatively low detection limit of 100 nM and a high sensitivity of 0.33 mA mM(-1) cm(-2). In addition, anti-interference properties, good reproducibility, long term performance, good repeatability and real sample analysis were achieved for the constructed sensor, owing to the synergetic effects of the Ag and MnO2-VC nanostructures. The aforesaid attractive analytical performance and facile preparation of the MnO2-VC@Ag core-shell nanospheres are new features for electrocatalytic materials and may hold promise for the design and development of effective hydrazine sensors.</P>
