Laser Acupuncture at HT7 Improves the Cerebellar Disorders in Valproic Acid-Rat Model of Autism

Jurairat Khongrum,Jintanaporn Wattanathorn 사단법인약침학회 2017 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.10 No.4

The novel therapeutic strategy against autism is essential due to the limited therapeutic efficacy. Based on the benefit of laser acupuncture at HT7 acupoint on the neurological disorders related with oxidative stress and inflammation, its benefit on oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and GABAergic/glutamatergic imbalance in cerebellum of autism have been considered. To elucidate this issue, male rat pups were induced autistic-like conditions by valproic acid (VPA) and treated with laser acupuncture at HT7 acupoint once daily between postnatal Day 14 and Day 40. At the end of study, the changes of oxidative stress markers, the expressions of cytokines interleukin 6 (IL-6) and glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) proteins (65 kDa and 67 kDa) together with gammaaminobutyric acid transaminase (GABA-T) activity and density of Purkinje cell in the cerebellum were assessed. The results showed that laser acupuncture HT7 decreased oxidative stress, IL-6 expression, and GABA-T activity but increased the expressions of GAD 65 kDa together with the density of Purkinje cells in the cerebellum. Therefore, laser acupuncture at HT7 is the potential strategy to improve the cerebellar disorders in VPA-rat model of autism. The mechanism may occur partly via the decrease of oxidative stress status, inflammation, and the improved GABAergic function.

Exploring incentive mechanisms for mobile crowdsourcing: sense of safety in a Thai city

        Jurairat Phuttharak,Seng Loke 서울시립대학교 도시과학연구원 2020 도시과학국제저널 Vol.24 No.1

The rapid adoption of mobile devices enables capture and transmission of a variety of sensor and user-contributed data, creating a new data collection paradigm and a wide range of services, often termed as mobile crowdsourcing. However, we are still investigating factors contributing towards the effectiveness of such systems. One key factor to succeed in mobile crowdsourcing applications is the incentive mechanism, which motivates people to contribute to a crowdsourcing effort. In this research, we conducted field experiments that compared the effectiveness of non-monetary and monetary incentive mechanisms, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The focus was on an exploration of how these mechanisms motivate users’ performance in a mobile crowdsourcing environment. In the experiment, we developed a smart zoning application that allows users to share areas of the cities they perceived as safe or unsafe. The results from this study contribute to research in mobile crowdsourcing for urban understanding. Taken together, these results suggest that payment-related incentives can not only engage people’s interest in project participation but also help improve their work performance in terms of productivity and quality. Notably, a fixed-price financial reward mechanism is best suited for short period data collection and achieving data quality. Also, referral incentive mechanisms, if properly designed, have the potential to extend user coverage, both spatially and temporally. These results can be helpful with regard to the formulation of guidelines on how to create and organize effective payment-based incentives for crowd involvement in cities.

Laser Acupuncture Improves Behavioral Disorders and Brain Oxidative Stress Status in the Valproic Acid Rat Model of Autism

Jintanaporn Wattanathorn,Jurairat Khongrum 사단법인약침학회 2015 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.8 No.4

The therapeutic strategy against autism, a severe neurological development disorder, is one of the challenges of this decade. Recent findings show that oxidative stress plays a crucial role on the pathophysiology of autism, and laser acupuncture at Shenmen (HT7) can improve oxidative status in many neurological disorders. Therefore, we aimed to assess the effect of laser acupuncture at HT7 on behavior disorders and oxidative stress status in the cortex, striatum, and hippocampus of the valproic acid rat model of autism. Laser acupuncture was performed once daily during postnatal day (PND) 14–PND 40. Behavioral tests including rotarod, open-field, learning and memory, and social behavior tests were performed during PND 14–PND 40. At the end of study, brain oxidative status including malondialdehyde levels and the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase were determined in the cortex, striatum, and hippocampus. Laser acupuncture at HT7 significantly improved autistic-like behaviors. Decreased malondialdehyde levels were observed in all areas mentioned above, however, increased glutathione peroxidase activity was observed only in the striatum and hippocampus. No changes in superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were observed in any investigated area of the brain. Therefore, our study suggests that laser acupuncture at HT7 partly mitigates autistic-like symptoms via improved oxidative status.

Potential of different salt forming agents on the formation of chitosan nanoparticles as carriers for protein drug delivery systems

        Manee Luangtana‑anan,Jurairat Nunthanid,Sontaya Limmatvapirat 한국약제학회 2019 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.49 No.1

The effects of salt forming agents for chitosan on the potential for nanoparticle formation was investigated. The salt forms were prepared from the amino acid group, including glutamic and aspartic acids, and the alpha hydroxyl acid group, including lactic and glycolic acids. All types of chitosan salt could be used to prepare bovine serum albumin (BSA) loaded nanoparticles. The chitosan salts prepared from the amino acid group showed a higher salt formation ability as demonstrated using FTIR, hence a higher %encapsulation efficiency (%EE) and a reduction in zeta potential were obtained. The difference was due to the different organic acids used giving different polymer conformations and pH values in solution. Chitosan glutamate gave the highest salt formation ability and hence the highest %EE was obtained. The release of protein from all types of chitosan was similar and chitosan glutamate exhibited the highest release. Chitosan salt is therefore a material of choice for protein-loaded nanoparticles and the characteristics of nanoparticles can be readily modulated by different types of salt form.
