        Progressive achievements in English

Jungmee Lee 한국영어학회 2023 영어학 Vol.23 No.-

This paper explores the preliminary process reading that arises from achievements in the progressive. The meaning of the progressive as a partitive operator poses challenges in the formalization of its occurrence with punctual predicates like achievements. I discuss problems with prior proposals (Rothstein 2004, Bohnemeyer 2005), and argue that the preliminary process reading should be accounted for in terms of the meaning of achievements rather than the meaning of the progressive. Based on Bach’s (1981) subdivision of achievements, I propose to analyze culmination-achievements as denoting a set of complex events which consist of a preliminary process and its culmination, while analyzing happening-achievements as a set of simple events of culmination. I show how the lexical specifications of the two subtypes of achievements result in the different patterns in the progressive. Furthermore, I argue that culmination-achievements differ from accomplishments in terms of the discourse statuses of the implications which are associated with their two subevents. Building on previous studies on projective contents (e.g. Simons et al. 2011, Tonhauser et al. 2013, 2018), I take a close look at the properties of the process implication triggered by culmination-achievements, and show that it is projective content.

Reportative evidentiality from interactions between an embedded mood and a sensory evidential

        Jungmee Lee 한국언어학회 2018 언어 Vol.43 No.3

This paper examines the reportative evidential reading that arises from the so-called -ta-te-la construction in Korean. Previous authors (e.g. Kim 2001, Chung 2005) argue that the -ta-te-la construction is derived from quotation constructions by means of a syntactic deletion, or it contains a reportative evidential. I discuss empirical problems with the previous accounts, by considering various characteristics of the -ta-te-la construction. I propose that the embedded declarative mood -ta semantically encodes the meaning of an `asserting’ eventuality, and its interaction with the sensory evidential -te gives rise to the reportative evidential reading. I provide a compositional analysis of the -ta-te-la construction, and discuss its empirical advantages over the previous accounts.

Korean modal sentences and their interactions with NPIs

        Jungmee Lee(이정미) 한국언어학회 2018 언어 Vol.43 No.2

This paper examines the modal readings of Korean sentences that contain the bound noun swu and Negative Polarity Items (NPIs). While swu can give rise to both the epistemic and the root readings, its occurrence with NPIs affects the availability of each modal reading. Previous authors (Ha 2007, Chung 2007, Kim 2014) argue for two separate syntactic structures for epistemic and root modals, and account for the modal readings of swu-sentences in terms of the proposed syntactic structures. In this paper, I propose to analyze the availability of each modal reading in terms of an independently motivated constraint on the scopal interaction between modals and NPIs (e.g. Sells & Kim 2006). Building on Lee (2017), I provide the syntactic and semantic derivations of swu-sentences with NPIs within the framework of Combinatory Categorial Grammar (e.g. Steedman and Baldridge 2011, Steedman 2012).

The scope ambiguity in the Korean Left-Node Raising construction

Jungmee Lee 경희대학교 언어정보연구소 2018 언어연구 Vol.35 No.1

This paper examines the ambiguity that arises from the Left-Node Raising (LNR) construction in Korean. I argue that the ambiguity is induced by the scopal relation between a coordinate phrase and a quantifier-type pivot: the quantificational meaning of a pivot can scope over the coordinate phrase, or it can take a narrow scope within each conjunct. I show that previous proposals such as the ATB-scrambling analysis (Nakao 2010) and the multi-dominance analysis (Chung 2010) have not addressed the ambiguity or have some empirical problems. I develop a compositional analysis of the scopal ambiguity within the framework of Combinatory Categorial Grammar (e.g. Steedman 1996; Steedman 2000; Baldridge 2002; Steedman and Baldridge 2011; Steedman 2012), and propose that it can be extended to the English and Korean RNR sentences with a quantificational pivot.

Epistemic vs. Root Modality in Interactions with Tense

        Jungmee Lee(이정미) 한국언어학회 2017 언어 Vol.42 No.4

This paper examines the modal reading of a Korean sentence that contains the bound noun swu. It yields both epistemic and root readings, but its co-occurrence with an overt tense morpheme affects the modal reading. Previous researchers (Ha 2007, Chung 2007, Kim 2010, Kim 2014) accounted for the modal readings in terms of two separate structures for epistemic and root modals. This paper presents an alternative analysis within the framework of Combinatory Categorial Grammar (Steedman 1996, 2000, 2012, Baldridge 2002). Following previous work on English modals (e.g. Perlmutter 1971, Jackendoff 1972, Ross 1985), I propose different lexical entries for the epistemic swu and the root swu, and develop a compositional analysis of the interaction between tense and the two variants of swu.

        Turner syndrome with primary hyperparathyroidism

        Jungmee Park,김유미,최진호,이범희,윤종호,Woon-Young Jeong,유한욱 대한소아내분비학회 2013 Annals of Pediatirc Endocrinology & Metabolism Vol.18 No.2

Turner syndrome has multiple comorbidities such as osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes, hypothyroidism, and hypertension. As they are treatable conditions, when there is early recognition and proper treatment is given. We report on a 23-year-old woman with Turner syndrome who presented with severe osteoporosis and hypercalcemia. Laboratory tests showed elevated levels of serum calcium and parathyroid hormone. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry showed severe osteopo-rosis (z score, -3.5). Ultrasound and 99mTc scintigraphy of parathyroid glands showed an adenoma in the right inferior gland. She was diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism due to an adenoma of the parathyroid gland. After excision of the adenoma, the patient’s serum calcium and parathyroid hormone levels returned to normal. Although only a few cases of Turners syndrome with primary hyperparathyroidism have been reported, hyperparathyroidism should be considered in cases of Turner syndrome with severe osteoporosis and hypercalcemia.

An Analysis of Trends in Christian Bibliotherapy in Korea: With a Focus on the Papers Published in 2003-2022

        Jungmee Heo J-INSTITUTE 2022 Protection Convergence Vol.7 No.1

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the research trends of the Christian bibliotherapy related papers published in Korea over the past two decades. Method: This study was conducted with the papers extracted with the topic of Christian bibliotherapy from among the papers published in Korea from 2003 to 2022 and the papers published in specialized academic journals. The papers to be analyzed were searched and collected with the topic of ’Christian bibliotherapy‘ for the pa-pers published in academic journals as well as the dissertations for master’s and doctoral degrees, which were published from 2003 until 2022 via the database within the search site of the Korea Education and Research Information Service (http://www.riss.co.kr). They were also included in the cases where bibliotherapy was performed with the Bible in addition to the Christian bibliotherapy. Results: As a result of this study, future research on Christian bibliotherapy needs to increase the studies on clinical bibliotherapy targeting various age groups, clarify the specific process of bibliotherapy, and needs to be supplemented with the studies on the process of training Christian bibliotherapy experts. Conclusion: This study will provide the basic data for the Christian bibliotherapy related studies, and will further present future research directions for the Christian bibliotherapy researchers.

A Stativizing Operator in Korean Relative Clauses

        Jungmee Lee(이정미) 사단법인 한국언어학회 2014 언어학 Vol.0 No.70

This paper examines the temporal interpretation of Korean relative clauses which are realized with the expression -nu, and their incompatibility with stative predicates. I analyze -nu as a kind of stativizing operator which lexically encodes the imperfective meaning. I account for the distributional restriction and the temporal interpretation in terms of the semantic function of-nu and independently motivated discourse principle about the reference time update.
