Last Poems에 나타난 Yeats의 정치적 주제

When we say that the poems of Yeats’s are political, they are concerned mainly in literary politics. The political themes in his poems are based on his belief in the creative leading roles of literature and arts, that refined cultivation of literature and arts and their support will surely prevent spiritual corruption of a nation or an age. Just as in the earlier and later poems of his, literature and love are contrasted with politics in his “Last Poems”. Viewed in political terms, his poems are reflection of his discontent with the political reality of Ireland, his disillusionment to the political leaders and Government of Ireland that could not accept his ideals of literary politics, and his recognition that political activity makes life poor and miserable. So, main currents of his political poems are related to dissuasion of political activity. Though Yeats often insists that life and poetry should not have anything to do with both politics and ideology, that is to say that both politics and ideology should be excluded out of the domains of poetry as well as life, we can easily recognize his poetry is, ironically, very political. For his poems imply or contain his discontent with real politics, his hatred of democracy and materialism, his deep interest in aristocracy and eugenics, and his emphasis on the political leadership of Anglo-Irish Protestants. Yeats consistently reveals his political concerns through his poems and especially in his last poems expresses his attraction toward the politics of conservative and heroic powers. In conclusion, it can be said that as revealed in his “Last Poems”, Yeats’s political and literary ideals became fixed respectively as aristocracy and the longing toward a heroic and epical world, because of his firm belief that, in the modem society which respects democracy and materialism but ignores the idealism of literature and arts, man cannot overcome his commonness, impotence, and spiritual corruption.

I always have been much interested to know how it works to translate an idea, a concept, or an experience into another language. What if people speaking the other language don't have the same thought, experience or background? Are we destined to be confined within the prisons of our own experiences and languages? The problem exists not only between people using different languages, but also among the people who speak the same language, because even siblings within a family cannot always have the same experiences as background.

A comparative study on differential item functioning detection of three approaches to measurement equivalence

This article compares three approaches for testing measurement equivalence in terms of detecting differential item functioning. These approaches include mean and covariance structure (MACS), confirmatory factor analysis with ordered categorical variables (ordinal CFA), and item response theory (IRT) model. With the growing interest in measurement invariance in latent variable models, several studies have been mainly conducted to compare the factor analytic approach with the item response theory approach. However, these studies have practical limitations due to unrealistic assumptions about observed variables and parameter nonequivalence. For a meaningful comparison between the factor analytic and item response methods, ordinal CFA is considered another alternative approach to measurement invariance in the present study. The results of the simulation study validate that the ordinal CFA approach presented inflated Type I error rates compared with the MACS and IRT methods in overall conditions, while the statistical power of ordinal CFA were not higher than those of MACS but much higher than those of the IRT model throughout most conditions.

Indeterminate Feature of Parameter Estimation in Multilevel Categorical Latent Variable

본 논문에서는 다층 잠재계층모형에서 모수의 구조적인 비확정성에 대해서 다룬다. 먼저 다층 잠재계층에서 non-full-rank, independent, permutation indeterminacy의 세 가지 경우에 대해 소개하고 각각의 경우에 발생할 수 있는 모수의 비확정성에 대해서 설명한다. 또한 모수의 비확정성에 대한 이해를 높이기 위해 수리적인 예시를 제시한다. 논의에서는다층 잠재계층모형을 이용해서 자료를 분석할 때 구조적 불확정성에 대한 인식이 중요하다는 점을 강조한다. 덧붙여, 연구자가 선택한 최종모형이 적절한 잠재 구조를 가졌는지를 점검하기 위한 지침을 제공한다. Structural indeterminacy among the multilevel discrete latent variables in the multilevel latent class model (MLCM) is discussed in this paper. Three scenarios - non-full-rank, independent, and permutation indeterminacy - are presented with theoretical explanations and proofs of each structural indeterminate case. Numerical examples are also included to provide intuitive and conceptual understanding of structural indeterminacy. The awareness of the structural indeterminacy in applying the MLCM to data is highlighted in the discussions. Researchers are giving examples and directions to check for problematic structures to ensure their final model has a theoretically sound latent structure when modeling data with multilevel discrete latent variables.

Assessment of water quality in an artificial urban canal: A case study of Songdo City in South Korea

Currently, the waterfront facility was constructed in New Songdo City, South Korea. It has the various water leisure areas and especially an artificial urban canal with filtered seawater by re-circulating flow system. However, due to excessive amount of nutrients from seawater combined with complicated geometry, it is highly vulnerable to deterioration of water quality. In this study, flow characteristics and pollutant transport were analyzed with comprehensive numerical models, MIKE 3 FM and ECO-lab. Based on these numerical results, notable sampling points were selected for field measurements and comparison between modeling and measured results were conducted. In addition, the integrated water quality evaluation index, Water Quality Index was applied to analyze various water quality issues. We also set up scenarios to control the two kinds of water quality factors, dissolved oxygen (DO), and total phosphorus (TP). As a result, the effect of 20% reduction of TP was less than 10% and it was almost ineffective for a year but it was reduced by up to 40% in case of scenario which DO is increased by 20%. Therefore, it was recommended to control the DO concentration, usually by applying re-aeration facility, rather than TP in artificial urban canal with seawater.

Hydraulic Analysis on the Hydrodynamic Pattern Change with Weir Removal Using HEC RAS model: A Case Study in Geum River, South Korea

In general, the purpose of installing the river structure is to secure the water depth through the structure. This ultimately increases the usability of agriculture and domestic water, and increases flood water reserves to reduce downstream flood damage. We tried to compare the water depth with respect to the weir removal and operation. And we chose the Geum among 4 major Rivers. The Geum River is located at 58.75 km (Baekjae weir), 81.72 km (Gongju weir), and 100.66 km (Sejong Weir) from the downstream. We will explain the structural features of the three weir of the Geum River and explain the hydraulic theory for analyzing the results. It also describes the role of each weir and the side effects of installing weirs. The experimental method is as follows. After obtaining the data of Geum River, the structure of Geum River is grasped through HEC-RAS model. Configure weir before and after installation via inlet structure data in geometric data. After that can analyze the results through compute and view the water depth and cross-sectional velocity change before and after the installation of the weir through the water flow and graph through the profile view.

Latent Class Modeling for Nested Data : Introduction to Multilevel Latent Class Model

잠재변수를 포함한 통계모형의 기본적인 가정은 개인의 응답이 서로 독립적이라는 것이다. 그러나 관찰치가 상위 수준의 집단에 속한 다층 구조에서 수집된 자료의 경우에는 동일한 집단에 속한 관찰치의 응답 간 상관이 발생하므로 독립성 가정이 충족되지 않는다. 비모수 다층잠재계층 모형은 집단수준의 범주형 잠재변인을 가정하여 동일한 집단에 속하여 발생하는 응답 간 상관을 설명하는 모형이다. 본 논문은 잠재계층분석 모형과 무선효과 모형을 통합한 비모수적 다층잠재계층 모형을 소개하고 실제 자료를 바탕으로 개인과 집단수준에서 최적의 잠재계층의 수를 결정하는 과정에 대해서 논의한다. The fundamental assumption in any latent variable model is that observations are independent of one another, given the latent status. However, this assumption is often inadequate when observations are nested within higher-level units because such nested data structures induce dependencies in data. The nonparametric version of the multilevel latent class model (MLCM) is an extension of latent class model (LCM) in which the dependencies in data are accounted for by discrete latent variables. This paper aims to review models with discrete latent variables and introduce the MLCM which integrates LCM and random effect model. The model selection issue in the MLCM is also discussed with an empirical example.
