Recent trends of mean and extreme precipitation in Korea

Jung, Il‐,Won,Bae, Deg‐,Hyo,Kim, Gwangseob John Wiley Sons, Ltd. 2011 International journal of climatology Vol.31 No.3

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The spatial and temporal variability of precipitation in Korea were investigated using 183 weather station data for 1973–2005. A set of 16 indices that represent mean and extreme values of precipitation data were estimated using daily precipitation data, linear and spatial trend relationships of the indices were analysed using the Mann–Kendall test and Moran's <I>I</I> test statistic, respectively. Results demonstrate that annual precipitation data have a significant positive trend and there is a strong spatial relationship in their variability. The increase of annual precipitation is mainly associated with the increase of frequency and intensity of heavy precipitation during summer season. However, precipitation during spring and winter seasons had a decreasing trend. This variation of precipitation is likely to increase flood and drought risk. It means that the increase of annual precipitation should not be helpful for water resources management but could be a burden to river management and dam operation in Korea. Pulsed Radiofrequency Treatment in Patient with Lumbar Radiculopathy Due to Bertolotti's Syndrome: A Case Report

        Jungil Bae,Heo Gang,Hangaram Kim,Hyung Sang Row,Yongjae Yoo 대한통증연구학회 2023 International Journal of Pain Vol.14 No.2

Bertolotti's syndrome (BS) is a condition that causes lower back pain due to the presence of a lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LSTV). A spectrum of therapeutic modalities, ranging from conservative management to surgical intervention, has been endeavored in its management. It has been reported that LSTV may subsequently lead to conditions such as scoliosis, facet joint arthritis, strains of the quadratus lumborum and iliopsoas muscles, and herniated discs. Moreover, BS commonly manifests with lower back pain; however, it is rarely associated with radiation-induced leg pain. In this case report, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of pulsed radiofrequency treatment in patients who underwent diagnostic nerve blocks for radicular pain suspected to be induced by BS and demonstrated temporary pain relief.

Accessory auricle: Classification according to location, protrusion pattern and body shape

Jungil Hwang,Jae Young Cho,Jin Sik Burm 대한성형외과학회 2018 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.45 No.5

Background Accessory auricles (AAs) are common congenital anomalies. We present a new classification according to location and shape, and propose a system for coding the classifications. Methods This study was conducted by reviewing the records of 502 patients who underwent surgery for AA. AAs were classified into three anatomical types: intraauricular, preauricular, and buccal. Intraauricular AAs were divided into three subtypes: intracrural, intratragal, and intralobal. Preauricular AAs were divided into five subtypes: precrural, superior pretragal, middle pretragal, inferior pretragal, and prelobal. Buccal AAs were divided into two subtypes: anterior buccal and posterior buccal. AAs were also classified according to their protrusion pattern above the surrounding surface: pedunculated, sessile, areolar, remnant, and depressed. Pedunculated and sessile AAs were subclassified as spherical, ovoid, lobed, and nodular, according to their body shape. Cartilage root presence and family history of AA were reviewed. A coding system for these classifications was also proposed. Results The total number of AAs in the 502 patients was 1,003. Among the locations, the superior pretragal subtype (27.6%) was the most common. Among the protrusion patterns and shapes, pedunculated ovoid AAs were the most common in the preauricular (27.8%) and buccal areas (28.0%), and sessile lobed AAs were the most common in the intraauricular area (48.7%). The proportion of AAs with a cartilage root was 78.4%, and 11% of patients had a family history. The most common type of preauricular AA was the superior pretragal pedunculated ovoid AA (13.2%) with a cartilage root. Conclusions This new system will serve as a guideline for classifying and coding AAs.

Curcumin-induced Growth Inhibitory Effects on HeLa Cells Altered by Antioxidant Modulators

Jungil Hong 한국식품과학회 2007 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.16 No.6

Curcumin (diferuloyl methane), originated rhizomes of Curcuma longa L. has been suggested as an antiinflammatory and anti-carcinogenic agent. In the present study, modulation of cytotoxic effects of curcumin on HeLa cells by different types of antioxidants was investigated. Cytotoxic effects of curcumin were significantly enhanced in the presence of superoxide dismutase (SOD) by decreasing IC50 to 15.4 from 26.0 μM after 24 hr incubation; the activity was not altered by catalase. The effect of curcumin was significantly less pronounced in the presence of 4 mM N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Low concentration (<1 mM) of NAC, however, increased the efficacy of curcumin. Cysteine and β-mercaptoethanol that have a thiol group, showed the similar biphasic patterns as NAC for modulating curcumin cytotoxicity, which was, however, constantly enhanced by ascorbic acid, a non-thiol antioxidant. In the presence of SOD, ascorbic acid, and 0.5 mM NAC, cellular levels of curcumin were significantly increased by 31-66%, whereas 4 mM NAC decreased the level. The present results indicate that thiol reducing agents showed a biphasic effect in modulating cytotoxicity of curcumin; it is likely that their thiol group is reactive with curcumin especially at high concentrations.

A Biomechanical Analysis of the CLOSED CHANGE STEP Motion in Waltz by Pre-Taping and Post-Taping

        Jungil Seo,Jeongki Lee,Boseob Heo J-INSTITUTE 2021 Kinesiology Vol.6 No.2

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to quantitatively identify the characteristics of lower extremity movements before and after taping during the closed change step motion in waltz for dance sports experts by using the functional taping, which is widely known for the prevention and treatment of the sports injuries, and also provide coaches and athletes with the appropriate posture and injury prevention by offering the basic data for the technical performance. Method: As for the subjects of this study, 8 female experts with 5 or more years of experience in dance sports in the metropolitan city of B were selected and experimented. Prior to entering the experiment, a consent was secured from each subject, and the method of the experiment was explained, while the kinematic data were collected by using 5 digital cameras. As for the statistical processing of this study, the joint angle data were calculated before and after taping during the closed change step motion by using the SPSS 24.0. First, the mean and standard deviation were obtained, and in order to analyze the difference before and after taping, and time and phase, a corresponding sample t-test was conducted. The level of significance was set to α=.05. Results: As a result of the experiment, it turned out that taping did stabilize the joint balance rather than causing problems for the mobility of the lower extremity joints via a biomechanical analysis of the lower extremities during the closed change step in motion waltz, and it is determined that it may have significance in that it provided the basic data required for the injury prevention as well as for the efficient performance of movements. Conclusion: Gathering the conclusions as such, it is determined that taping may have significance in that it stabilizes the joint balance during the closed change step motion in waltz and provides the basic data required for the efficient performance of movement and the injury prevention.

Inhibition of Oral Epithelial Cell Growth in vitro by Epigallocatechin-3-gallate

Jungil Hong,Mi-Ri Kim,Na Hyun Lee,Bo Hyun Lee 한국식품과학회 2009 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.18 No.4

The most abundant tea catechin, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), has been reported to inhibit cell proliferation and induce apoptosis in many types of cancer cells. In the present study, effects of EGCG on the growth of oral epithelial cells including CAL-27 oral squamous carcinoma cells and dysplastic oral keratinocytes (DOK) were investigated. EGCG inhibited growth of CAL-27 cells and DOK with IC?? of 14.4-21.0 and 5.8-14.2 μM after 24 and 48 hr incubation, respectively. EGCG was significantly less effective in inhibiting DOK growth. The effects of EGCG, however, were dramatically less pronounced in the presence of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. Inhibitory effects of EGCG on CAL-27 cell growth were also much less pronounced in the presence of fetal bovine serum (FBS). EGCG induced caspase-3 activation in both CAL-27 and DOK cells in a serum free condition without SOD/catalase; in the presence of 10% FBS and SOD/catalase, EGCG, even at 100 μM, did not affect cell growth. The present results indicate that EGCG inhibited oral cell growth with higher potency to more malignant CAL-27 cells than DOK, and the effects were markedly altered by SOD/catalase and serum content in media.

One-Loop Master Integral for Order-v2n Relativistic Corrections Γ[J/ψ→e+e-]

Jungil Lee,Chaehyun Yu,Hyeon-Kyun Noh 한국물리학회 2007 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.50 No.2

We show that one-loop scalar integrals contributing to the order-$v^{2n}$ relativistic corrections to the QCD vertex corrections to the spin-triplet $S$-wave heavy-quark-antiquark pair annihilation into a virtual photon can be expressed in terms of a single master integral. With an algebraic reduction combined with the tensor-integral reduction method, we first simplify the scalar integrals as linear combinations of two-point functions. The two-point functions are reduced into a single master integral by using the recurrence relations derived from integration by parts. Order-$v^2$ formulas are explicitly derived, and a strategy to calculate the higher-order relativistic corrections at order $\alpha_s$ is also given. The result may be very useful in calculating the order-$v^{2n}$ relativistic corrections to the leptonic decay width of the spin-triplet $S$-wave heavy quarkonium at order $\alpha_s$.
