Background: Ginseng (Panax ginseng Meyer) is an important medicinal herbs in Asia. However, ginsengvarieties are less developed. Method: To developed ginseng varieties, a pure line selection method was applied in this study. Results: Gumpoong was testing of 4-yr-old specimens in 2002, the proportions of the below-groundroots that were rusty colored for Gumpoong was 1.29 in Daejeon and 1.45 in Eumseong, whereas theproportions for its yellow berry variant were 2.60 and 2.45 in the two regions, respectively. Thus theGumpoong was resistant to root rust. Sunpoong has a high yielding property. Its average root weight is70.6 g for 6-yr-old roots. Its yield is 2.9 kg/1.62m2 and the rate of heaven- and earth-grade product is20.9%, which is very high compared to 9.4% for Yunpoong. Sunone is resistance to root rot and thesurvival rate of 4-yr-old roots was 44.4% in 1997, whereas that of the violet-stem variant landrace was21.7%. Sunhyang has content of arginyl-fructosyl-glucose (AFG), which produces the unique scent of redginseng, is 95.1 mmol/g and greater than the 30.8 mmol/g of Chunpoong in 6-yr-old plants. Sunun andCheongsun are being nurtured to protect genetic resources. Conclusion: Developed ginsneg varieties will be used as the basis for the protection of genetic resourcesand breeding. Jang-Ho Lee

The object of this study is to survey water quality of reservoirsin in Asan city. We also suggest some countmeasures for environmental preservation toward sustainable urban development of Asan city. We analyze water qualities (pH, DO, COD, SS, T-P, T-N and Chlorophyll-a) of reservoirs. The level of water quality of small reservoirs is in the range of level Ⅳ-Ⅴ higher than the level Ⅲ established by the Ministry of Environment. Especially, water quality of Sinchang, Youngin and Shinchung reservoirs is worser than that of other reservoirs. Water quality of Asan and Sapkyo lake is the range of level Ⅳ-Ⅴ. As the levels of T-P and T-N are level Ⅳ and level Ⅴ, respectively, eutrophication might be progressed. Reservoirs in Asan city were already serious polluted by inflow of wastewater from residents, animal husbandries and industries. Recently, Metropolitan Area Development Planning(MADP) for Asan bay-area was suggested by the Ministry of Construction. According to this plan, industrialization and urbanization of Asan area will rapidly progress. If sewage and wastewater treatment facilitiesare not provided, water quality of reservoirs in Asan city will be worse. In order to prevent of environment pollution, first, the impact of industrialization and urbanization of Asan area on the environment should be considered at the beginning of MADP. Second, total effluent regulation of water pollution, air pollution and soil wastes, based on the self-purification of the Asan city environment, should be enforced.

There are many kind of diagnostic entities in submandibular or neck masses, and we can set up treatment plan and estimate treatment result, prognosis by accurate diagnosis. By reasoning medical and dental history, physical examination, anatomical consideration of masses in submandibular or neck area, location of masses, laboratory and radiographic studies, we can formulate a clinical diagnosis or differential diagnosis. Although a clinical diagnosis might suffice in some instances, a definitive(microscopic) diagnosis is frequently required for proper treatment. In order to get some information about making accurate diagnosis and setting up appropriate treatment plan, we did clinical study and histopathologic classification of 82 patients who visited and were operated for sudmandibular masses at Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Seoul National University Hospital from 1988 to 1992. The result were as follows: 1. Submandibular masses occured most frequently in forties and fifties, and there was no sex predilection. 2. Chief complaints were in order of mass, swelling, pain and consistency were sofe mass, mobile hard mass, firm mass, diffuse swelling in descending order. 3. Most frequent pathologic finding was lymphadenitis. 4. Site of submandibular masses were submandible, neck, submental, retromandible in descending order, and there was no predilection between left and right side. 5. Accuracy rate between clinical impression and result was 51.2%.

Low power consuming butane gas sensors were fabricated using mica substrate which is a thin and elastic insulator. To increase the sensitivity and the stability, various catalyst layers were formed on SnO_(2) thin layer. Among them, SnO_(2) /Pt(17Å)/Pd(30Å) and SnO_(2) /Pt(8Å )/Pd(30Å) thin layer showed good characteristics in stability and dependance of temperature and humidity. The size of fabricated sensors was 1 x 3 mm^(2) and the consumed power was lower than 100 mW at operating temperature(250℃). For 2000 ppm butane concentration, the response time and the recovery time were about 5 seconds and 15 seconds respectively. The sensitivity of the sensors was about 80 % for 5000 ppm butane concentration.

The balance of high speed spindle system with high precision rotation like grinding machine is very important. Traditionally, we use trial and error method to balance the spindle. It takes much time. So we are developing the automatic balancing equipment being used in the grinding machine. The balancing head we develop is wireless. It will be used high-speed grinding machine. We use influence coefficient method to control the automatic balancer. Experiments are based on automatic and manual balancing. We perform test of the vibration filter. It helps to remove noise. The filter and experiments with automatic balancing controller show that automatic balancing control can be successfully achieved with the quick response and good stability characteristics.

In reference to the ISO-4037 and ANSI N13.11, appropriateness of the shielding and collimating system, and suitability of the irradiation and its environmental conditions of a 20 Ci Cs-137 gamma-ray irradiator installed in Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety(KINS) were investigated. Upon the installation of the irradiator, condition of collimator alignment and virtual beam cross section were examined by use of a portable He-Ne laser. In order to evaluate the fitness of the secondary(scattered) to primary ratio of the collimated gamma-ray beam from the irradiator in light of ISO and ANSI requirement, the measurements of the secondary to primary ratio were performed by use of a cavity type ion chamber which had been calibrated in a calibration laboratory that maintains reliable traceability. For the theoretical assessment of the gamma-ray field the collimated beam were divided into fifteen sectors and for each sector the secondary to primary ratio and the gamma-ray spectrum was simulated by means of Monte Carlo method. The outcomes were compared with the experimental results, and cause of scattering and the existence of alleged modifying factors in the irradiator were examined.

The study purports to analyse and measure the quantity of minerals in the blood of the players after soccer match(the first half and latter half, ninety minutes) in order to investigate how it has changed. The subjects used for this study are twenty-two members belonging to the In-Ha University soccer team. Important finding are presented as follows: 1. The quantity of sodium(Na) in the blood was 138.98 1.898 in normal condition, but it became 139.91 2,248 after match increasing by 0.936. 2. The Quantity of postassium(K) in the blood was 8.39 1.49, but no change happened. It stayed as 8.28 1.461. 3. The quantity of chloride(Cl) in the blood was 99.4 1.869 in normal condition, but it became 100.72 1.667 after match increasing by 1.318. 4. The quantity of calcium(Ca) in the blood was 9.25 0.323 in normal condition, but it became 9.54 0.345 after match increasing by 0.28. 5. The quantity of phosphorus(P) in the blood was 2.99 0.533 in normal condition, but it became 4.18 0.62 after match increasing by 1.195.

Comparison between the Flexiblade Laryngoscope and the Macintosh Blade Laryngoscope in Endortracheal Indubation Sun-Young Jand, M.D., Sang-Kyi Lee, M.D., and Jun-Rae Lee, M.D. Department of Anesthesiology, Chonbuk National University Medical School, Jeonju, Korea Background: The Flexiblade laryngoscope has a unique structure that is composed of a blade and a handle with a trigger. When the trigger of the Flexiblade laryngoscope is squeezed, the hyoepiglottic ligament is depressed, the epiglottis is moved anteriorly, and then the laryngoscopic grade is improved. This study was designed to compare the Flexiblade laryngoscope with the conventional Machintosh blade laryngoscope in the laryngoscopic view in endotracheal intubation. Methods: Following induction of general anesthesia, the laryngoscopic grades of 110 patients were evaluated while five different blade positions of the Flexiblade laryngoscope and a laryngoscopy with the Macintosh blade were performed. The laryngoscopic grades which were described by Cormack and Lehane were classified from 1 to 4. Results: With the Macintosh blade laryngoscope, 98.2% of the patients were grade one and two, and 98.2% of the patients was laryngoscopic grade one and two with partial depression of the trigger of the Flexiblade laryngoscope. The laryngoscopic grade of maximal depression of the Flexiblade trigger had similar results to partial depression of the trigger. However, the partial depression of the Flexiblade laryngoscope showed better laryngoscopic views than the maximal depression of the Flexiblade laryngoscope or the Macintosh blade laryngoscope, respectively. In the overall success rate of endo-tracheal intubation and using the adjusting maneuvers, the Flexiblade laryngoscope was superior to the Macintosh blade laryngoscope. Conclusions: The Flexiblade laryngoscope is comparable to the Macintosh blade laryngoscope for endotracheal intubation, therefore, the Flexiblade laryngoscope can be recommended as the first choice for endotracheal intubation.
