Delineating Forgotten Figures in Taiwan’s Dance History - The Life of Lee HuiMei -

Lee HuiMei (Emiko Suzuki, 1918-2021), a Japanese emigre who opened a dance school in Taiwan after WWII, is a little-known though significant figure in Taiwan’s dance history. In 2018, a dance drama highlighting her life story was created to depict her dance training and experiences. This dance drama is based on Lee’s biography, as well as a collection of dance artifacts donated to National Museum of Taiwan History and interviews with some participants in this project. The study contained here is conceived of as a/r/tography, where the research methodology, creative practice and performative pedagogy are conducted by the researchers. The ongoing project has now presented one informal showing at the campus of Tainan University of Technology and a semi-formal showing at the National Museum of Taiwan History. Studies like this one are important in order to understand the lived experiences and trajectory of dance educators and performers in Taiwan.

Dance development in Taiwan has gone through several stages in the twentieth century. This study examines the major social changes that have affected dance development in Taiwan in the early decades of the post-martial law period. It focuses on the multi-directional development of dance due to the social transformation after the abolition of martial law. Special attention is placed on changes derived from foreign influence and government policies that have affected the function of dance afterwards. The discussions demonstrates how the habitus has changed in the dance field and why dance artists and educators exercised their agency to adjust to these changes. The purpose of this study is to illuminate ow certain aspects of dance development in Taiwan have been affected by the changes.

2002년부터 문화·창조 산업을 위한 발전 계획은 대만 문화정책의 중요한 부분이었다. 이 정책은 많은 예술가들이 개인의 수익성과 단체의 혁신을 추구를 장려하여 왔다. 본 논문에 포함된 연구들은 정부의 문화 정책이 어떻게 개념화 되고 무용 공연과 대학무용교육관련 정책이 영향력을 갖게 되는가에 대하여 집중한다. 본 연구는 민족지학적인 연구로서 대만의 무용 발전의 발자취를 설명한다. 또한, 심층 인터뷰 분석, 참여 관찰, 그리고 신문, 잡지, 블로그, 그리고 온라인 상의 소셜 네트워크와 같은 다양한 문헌을 통해 예술적 가치와 이윤을 남기는 것 사이에서 균형을 잡는데 어려움을 겪는 대만의 예술가와 교육자들에 대하여 살펴본다. 본 연구는 대만의 무용과 무용교육계에 외국의 영향력과 정부의 간섭이 지속되는 주기적인 패턴의 양상을 발견한다.

지난 20년 동안, 대만 고등교육의 국제화는 정부 혹은 인구학적 압박이건, 떠오르는 산재된 자원들의 성장이건 간에 다양한 이유를 가지고 가속화 되었다. 본 연구는 대만 고등교육의 무용에 관하여 집중적으로 기술하였다. van Leeuwen의 합법화 이론을 방법론적 기틀로 사용하여, 본 논문은 국제화의 가치의 명료성을 대만 무용 고등교육계의 주요 인물들의 음성과 문자 텍스트를 가지고 조사하였다. 정부담화와 공식 연설문, 그리고 학계 주요학자들의 인터뷰 검토를 통해, 본 연구는 국제화의 저항하는 담론이 존재하는 반면, 문화 창조적 산업과 관련한 질적 확신과 부조화된 감정들 가운데 ‘최상의 해결책’의 중요성이라는 이름하에 대만 고등 교육 안에 무용의 가치 가정들이 매우 긍정적임을 발견하였다. 본 연구의 결과들은 고등교육계의 대문 무용의 국제화의 지속된 성장을 시사하고 있다.
