Vol.14 No.1

Analysis of John Steinbeck’s Group-Men Theory in Light of Thomas Seeley’s Honeybee Democracy Kim, Joseph-Yosup (Kunsan National University) John Steinbeck introduces and deals with a biological concept of “group-men” in his In Dubious Battle. There has been a number of research or related research on exploring Steinbeck’s group-men theory with fish’s collective intelligence (or stupidity) since the 1940s even before the publication of The Log from the Sea of Cortez. However, no one has attempted to analyze such theory with honeybee’s collective intelligence. This study aims to examine group-men theory portrayed in the novel with Thomas Seeley’s Honeybee Democracy. Embodying the group-men theory allows Steinbeck observe the working people as the subject of communal life rather than that of good and evil through Doc Burton’s eyes. Doc Burton is a representative figure of Steinbeck’s non-teleological thinking through whom Steinbeck examines the problems of the existence of humankind and the (im)possibility of reconciliation. Even though Mac takes a role of a scouting bee, he and the community of the working people have failed to minimize the leaders’ influence on the group. This eventually leads to the collapse of the community unlike those so-called harmonious and “democratic” groups of honeybees.

Vol.7 No.-

The purpose of this study is to propose a new theory for the English teaching based on the Simplified Conditions Method (SCM) from the field of Education Engineering. SCM is a method that's used to analyze a task, simplify its conditions, accomplish the goal(S), and provides a practical prescription. In this study, an attempt was made to adopt the theory of SCM to the English education which cultivates the learners competency in communicative ability in English by simplifying the conditions of learning. This new theory suggests that intonation, pronunciation, and repetition should be the main elements of the epitome of this new English teaching method. The study further suggests that the theory should employee effective strategies to motivate the leasers and teach practical and survival English first, instead of teaching bonny grammar first. Further study is warranted to analyze the effectiveness of this new theory.

Vol.5 No.-

The purpose of this research is to examine the effectiveness of new English teaching methods though an Immerison program. The Korean Ministry of Education has been funding many universities in Korea for these programs, but most of the programs have been reported not successful. Despite this discouraging fact, Pusan National University decided to organize an English Immerison Program in the winter of 1998 designedparticularly for students preparing for international business. It was scheduled for two weeks, withand enrollment of 36 students This program introduced many challenging teaching methods and strategies that had not been introduced in the other programs. The students who participated in the program showed significant improvement in their speaking competence in English. This paper introduces the methods and the strategies that were used in the program and analyzes the results. Although it is very premature to conclude that the methods and strategies used in this program will benefit every immersion program or teaching setting, it offers a positive approach in an area where many other methods and strategies have failed. Further research is warranted for more effective methods and strategies.

Single-insertion technique for anesthetizing the inferior alveolar nerve, lingual nerve, and long buccal nerve for extraction of mandibular first and second molars: a prospective study

        Joseph Benny,Kumar Nithin,Vyloppilli Suresh,Sayd Shermil,Manojkumar KP,Vijaykumar Depesh 대한구강악안면외과학회 2020 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.46 No.6

Objectives: Appropriate and accurate local anesthetic (LA) techniques are indispensable in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery to obtain a satisfactory outcome for both the operating surgeon and the patient. When used alone, the inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) technique requires supplemental injections like long buccal nerve block for extraction of mandibular molars leading to multiple traumatic experiences for the patient. The aim of this study was to anesthetize the inferior alveolar, lingual, and long buccal nerves with single-needle penetration requiring a minimal skillset such as administering a conventional IANB through introduction of the Benny Joseph technique for extraction of mandibular molars. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study conducted in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Kunhitharuvai Memorial Charitable Trust (KMCT) Dental College, Calicut, India. The duration of the study was 6 months, from June to November 2017, with a maximum sample size of 616 cases. The LA solution was 2% lignocaine with 1:100,000 adrenaline. The patients were selected from a population in the range of 20 to 40 years of age who reported to the outpatient department for routine dental extraction of normally positioned mandibular right or left first or second molars. Results: Of the 616 patients, 42 patients (6.8%) required re-anesthetization, a success rate of 93.2%. There were no complications such as hematoma formation, trismus, positive aspiration, and nerve injuries. None of the cases required re-anesthetization in the perioperative period. Conclusion: The Benny Joseph technique can be employed and is effective compared with conventional IANB techniques by reducing trauma to the patient and also requires less technique sensitivity.

This paper discusses designing a course for undergraduate English interpretation and Translation students focused on teaching the elements of story structure using elements of the novel Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien and the film trilogy of the same name directed by Peter Jackson. Story structure will be taught using the theory of the monomyth by Joseph Campbell and drawing from other concepts such as archetypes and shadow as developed by Carl G. Jung and Maria von Franz. Additional relevant aspects of cultural literacy will be introduced using various materials related to the story, its creators, scholars and its context within contemporary culture. Following discussion of story structure and cultural context, course design will be considered and examples of assignments and class content will be provided including film and reading discussion questions.

Vol.28 No.-

This article assumes that all laws have social sources. It is argued: 1. that legal sources are reasons for action; 2. that closure rules such as `whatever is not legally prohibited is legally permitted` are logical truths; 3. that, nevertheless, legal gaps are inevitable.

Hyperplastic Autotransplanted Parathyroid Tissue Migrating into Fatty Tumor after Total Parathyroidectomy

Joseph Arturo Reza,Georg Kristof Wiese,Joseph Dominic Portoghese 대한갑상선-내분비외과학회 2018 The Koreran journal of Endocrine Surgery Vol.18 No.4

Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPTH) occurs commonly in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Uncontrolled SHPTH is associated with complications of calcium deposition including calciphylaxis and elevated rates of cardiovascular morbidity. Current treatment recommendations for medically refractory disease include total parathyroidectomy, often with autotransplantation (TPTH+AT) of minced parathyroid gland. Surgical intervention is associated with a reduction in cardiovascular mortality. We report a case of a 56-year-old man with ESRD who developed SHPTH and underwent TPTH+AT of parathyroid tissue into the right brachioradialis muscle. Over the course of 7 years he developed a mass at the site of the autotransplanted gland as well as recurrent refractory hyperparathyroidism with increased forearm uptake noted on sestamibi scan. After excision of this mass, pathology demonstrated hyperplasia of the minced gland fragments which were embedded within a mass of fibroadipose tissue rather than the muscle tissue it was originally transplanted in.

Reduction, Enrichment, and Gaps in Explaining Qualitative Mental States

Vol.0 No.34

The issue of the explanatory gap has frustrated numerous attempts to reductively explain conscious mental states. Joseph Levine, who first coined the term, has argued that the gap is implied by the conceivability arguments against type-identity theorists that were originally presented by Saul Kripke. However, Levine believes that these arguments show that the gap is only epistemic, and so do not warrant dualist conclusions. Block and Stalnaker have criticized Levine’s argument by focusing on his conception of reductive explanation as requiring a priori conceptual analysis. According to Block and Stalnaker, a posteriori identities can satisfy the conditions needed for reductive explanation of mental properties. Hence, contrary to Levine, Block and Stalnaker argue a priori conceptual analyses of the kind Levine envisions are not required to close the explanatory gap. In this paper, I argue, first, that Levine’s argument cannot accommodate such identities without compromising his epistemic take on the explanatory gap, and second, that while a posteriori identities satisfy the deducibility condition for reduction, it is not at all obvious that they satisfy what I call the ‘enrichment condition’.
