UsingMobile-Based Slido for EffectiveManagement of a University English Reading Class
( Jongbum Ha ) 한국멀티미디어언어교육학회 2018 Multimedia Assisted Language Learning Vol.21 No.4
The potential of Slido―an online platform with which the teacher can get a voice from his or her students―for effective management of foreign language classrooms motivated this study. 110 students at a university in South Korea experienced six weeks of Slido activities in which they were asked to present questions and key words through Slido after reading authentic passages within a limited time. A survey of written questionnaires was used for data collection, which included general questions about students’ perceptions on the use of Slido in class as well as its effects on their participation, comprehension, and motivation. The results suggest that Slido was effective, leading to students’ active participation, better comprehension, and higher motivation. The anonymous and spontaneous nature of Slido enabled students to present their questions with little hesitation for instant feedback from the teacher and share their ideas with other classmates in the form of real-time word clouds. Slido was considered the most ideal form to trigger students’ questions among the given choices although it has both positive and negative aspects. Implications are suggested based on the findings of the current study, and several limitations as well as a suggestion for further study are presented.
Validity of Using Text-Based Online Chat for Error Analyses
Jongbum Ha(하종범) 한국외국어교육학회 2006 Foreign languages education Vol.13 No.4
This paper examines the use of English determiners in chat with the focus on determiner-related errors. For this, the comparisons were made in the use of determiners between chat and the grammatical judgment test, which was followed by the investigation of the role of task type on the determiner use in chat. The results show that deletions of determiners are significantly more common in the meaning-focused activity (i.e. chat), and that students commit more errors in the form-focused activity (i.e. the grammatical judgment test). It was also found that task type was a significant factor to cause the difference in the frequency of determiners, implying that the convergent task might be more appropriate to use to look at students’ competence regarding determiner use than the divergent task. However, the overall ratio of deletions was so high that it seems to be hard for researchers to obtain the precise picture of learners’ developmental state through the chat transcript.
Individual Differences in Perception Toward English Pronunciation Development with ASR Technology
( Jongbum Ha ) 한국멀티미디어언어교육학회 2021 멀티미디어 언어교육 Vol.24 No.3
This study examines students’ perception of the use of ASR technology in the self-paced development of English pronunciation. Participants were composed of 80 Korean students from two English listening classes at a university in South Korea. After practicing shadow-reading of the learnt passage, they were required to have their speeches converted into text using ASR technology and submit it as homework every two weeks. At the end of the semester, students completed a survey using written questionnaires regarding their personal information as well as their perception of using ASR technology. The results show that while no salient effects were found with the all the participants as a whole, significant differences were found between students. Specifically, English listening and speaking proficiencies and risk-taking behavior are shown to be strong predictors for successful performance in the ASR-based activity. The results also show that device satisfaction was a significant factor in explaining students’ successful performance in recognizing pronunciation errors and developing English pronunciation proficiency. Based on student responses, both positive and negative aspects of using ASR technology for developing English pronunciation are discussed. The findings suggest that ASR technology can provide pedagogical benefits insofar as its limitations are recognized.

InAs self-assembled quantum-dots (QDs) capped with InGaAs strain-reducing layers (SRLs) grown by using the molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) and the migration-enhanced epitaxy (MEE) methods were fabricated on GaAs substrates in a solid-source MBE system and their optical properties were investigated by using the temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL). The PL results for QDs capped with a SRL by using MEE showed a lower peak energy and a smaller full width at half maximum of the spectral band compared to those of QDs with a SRL grown by using MBE. The activation energies for quenching of the QD PL were obtained by fitting the temperature-dependent PL data and appeared to be comparable to the energy differences between the PL peaks of the ground states and the SRLs, indicating that the escape of electron-hole pairs from the QDs to the SRL is probably the dominant channel for quenching at high temperatures.
Enhancing Korean Students' Use of English Phrasal Verbs
Jongbum Ha(하종범) 한국중원언어학회 2009 언어학연구 Vol.0 No.14
English phrasal verbs are difficult for non-Germanic language speakers to learn; as non-Germanic languages contain no phrasal verbs. According to Smidowicz (1997), phrasal verbs are familiar, personal, and friendly to native speakers of English, whereas they are unfamiliar, impersonal, and unfriendly to non-native speakers. The current study explored a way to help Korean participants aware of the use of phrasal verbs with the help of textual enhancement. The pretest, posttest and control group design was employed with 30 Korean students. The results show that the experimental group chose phrasal verbs more in their posttest than the control group, which may suggest the positive effect of textual enhancement. However, it is possible that there was an intervening variable involved in this research. Despite the methodological limitation, this study suggests a positive pedagogical implication for Korean EFL students' ability to learn of phrasal verbs.

InAs self-assembled quantum-dot (QD) structures with In$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As strain-reducing layers were successfully grown on GaAs substrates by migration-enhanced epitaxy. At room temperature, the photoluminescence (PL) peak wavelength of QDs appeared at $\sim$1.3 ${\mu}$m, which is applicable for fiber-optic communications. After introducing two additional periods of InAs/InGaAs supperlattice layers on the dots, the PL peak showed a further redshift, as well as a sharper full-width at half maximum (FWHM). Emission at a peak wavelength of 1.45 $\mu$m with a FWHM of 30 meV was achieved for InAs QDs on GaAs.
