A Short Note on Inclusive and Exclusive Plurals in Korean

Michael Jonathan Mathew Barrie(Michael Jonathan Mathew Barrie ),Éric Mathieu(Éric Mathieu ) 한국생성문법학회 2023 생성문법연구 Vol.33 No.1

The aim of this short article is to give a comprehensive analysis of number in Korean, adding a novel observation about the interpretation of plurals in that language. Based on the new data, our proposal is that number is distributed along the nominal spine with different effects depending on the type of functional head (and semantic features) it is associated with. In particular, we propose that number in Korean is associated with two number projections, NumP1 and NumP2, (see Watanabe 2010 for Japanese, Vazquez Rojas Maldonado 2012 for Purépecha (isolate, tsz), Dali and Mathieu 2021 for Tunisian Arabic (Afro-Asiatic, aeb)). By shedding light on the distinction between inclusive and exclusive plurals in Korean and the relationship between definiteness and plurality, we contribute to the current debate related to the distribution of the Korean plural.

An Exchange on, “Diversionary Dragons, or ‘Talking Tough in Taipei’”

2011 Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.11 No.1

In “Diversionary Dragons, or ‘Talking Tough in Taipei’” (Journal of East Asian Studies 9, 3: 369–398), Yitan Li, Patrick James, and A. Cooper Drury presented a newly created data set to show that Chen Shui used independence rhetoric and confrontation with the mainland as a diversionary tactic in the face of domestic political difficulties. In the present exchange, Jonathan Sullivan challenges the authors’ understanding of how the Democratic Progressive Party used the Taiwan independence issue—and the authors’ interpretation of independence—and raises questions about the coding of press coverage as a means of identifying true preferences. The authors respond, concluding that the future use of such diversionary tactics is by no means foreclosed.

Dissecting Inchoatives and Causatives: English get constructions

Vol.22 No.3

Barrie, Michael Jonathan Mathew and Sung, Moonhyun. 2018. Dissecting Inchoatives and Causatives: English get Constructions. Language and Information, 22.3. 91-108. In this paper, we present data from English get-constructions and from Northern Iroquoian to challenge the recent consensus that in no languages are causatives built on inchoatives. Our data suggest the need for distinct functional projections for the causative and inchoative. We argue that while they are bundled in other situations, the functional heads for the causative and inchoative can be split as described in the present paper. This line of research follows recent trends in investigating the fine structure of the vP layer (Alexiadou et al. 2015, Harley 2013, Kim 2011, Marantz 2013, Pylkkänen 2008, Ramchand 2008, Legate 2014). We propose a syntactic mechanism for bundling and, in doing so, account for differences in the range of possible meanings with adverbs between canonical causatives and get-causatives. Briefly, get-causatives have unbundled causative and inchoative heads and have a wider ranger of adverbial meanings due to the projection of independent CausP and InchP. Canonical causatives have a bundled Caus-Inch head, projecting a single Caus/InchP, which leads to fewer sites for adverbs to adjoin and accordingly to a narrower range of adverbial meanings. Clinical Outcomes Following Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty: Minimum 2-Year Follow-up

        Jonathan Quinn,Peter Jones,Ray Randle 대한정형외과학회 2022 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.14 No.1

Background: The longer-term outcomes of revision total knee arthroplasty are not well described in the current literature. Managing patient expectations of revision total knee arthroplasty can be challenging for orthopedic surgeons due to a paucity of data to guide decision-making. We present outcomes of revision total knee arthroplasty performed by a single surgeon over a 12-year period from 2004 through 2015. Methods: A retrospective review of hospital and private medical records demonstrated 202 revision total knee arthroplasties performed by the senior author in 178 patients from 2004 through 2015. Of these, 153 patients were available for assessment. Patients were contacted and invited to participate in a structured telephone interview to assess Oxford Knee Score (OKS) and patient satisfaction. All patients received the PFC (Depuy) prosthesis at a single institution and were followed up for minimum 2 years postoperatively at the time of review. Retrospective chart review was used to obtain other data for analysis including patient demographics, preoperative and postoperative range of motion (ROM), and intraoperative details. Results: This cohort demonstrated a 93.5% survival rate and an 85% satisfaction rate at a mean of 6.5 years postoperatively. Mean ROM improved from 100° (range, 5°–145°) to 112° (range, 35°–135°) (p < 0.001). The mean OKS was 39.25 (range, 14–48). The factors associated with improved postoperative outcomes included male sex, fewer previous revision total knee arthroplasty procedures, increased preoperative ROM, and receiving a less constrained implant. Conclusions: This study provides a comprehensive description of outcomes following revision total knee arthroplasty in a large patient cohort with a long follow-up. Although revision total knee arthroplasty is a challenging and complex aspect of arthroplasty surgery, high patient satisfaction and good functional outcomes can be achieved for the majority of patients.

A Reliable Surgical Approach to Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty

        Jonathan Quinn,Peter Jones,Ray Randle 대한정형외과학회 2022 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.14 No.2

Background: The surgical exposure obtained in revision total knee arthroplasty should facilitate the utilisation of instrumentation and implants, including adjuncts such as stemmed prostheses, bone allograft, and artificial augments. We have previously identified within this cohort of revision total knee arthroplasty patients a high satisfaction rate of 93.5% at a mean 6.5 years of followup and a high level of postoperative function. We, therefore, seek to describe in detail the operative technique and perioperative care and report the early postoperative complications. Methods: We report on the surgical approach, closure technique, and postoperative care used by the senior author for revision total knee arthroplasty procedures. The patient demographics, intraoperative details, and postoperative outcomes are also reported. We aim to provide a clear description of the intraoperative technique and postoperative outcome, facilitating adoption or comparison with other surgeons or techniques. Patient inclusion criteria were revision total knee arthroplasty performed by the senior author using the PFC (Depuy) prosthesis at John Flynn Private Hospital with a minimum of 2-year postoperative follow-up. A retrospective chart review was combined with a structured telephone assessment questionnaire to assess outcomes. Results: A total of 202 revision total knee arthroplasties were available for follow-up in 185 patients. The mean 1-year postoperative range of motion was 110°. Key features of surgical approach include incision planning, soft-tissue plane development, parapatellar scar debridement, safe removal of implants, management of bone defects, and closure technique. The overall 90-day complication rate was 9%, including 4.4% requiring manipulation under anaesthesia and 3% superficial surgical site infections (1 patient requiring intravenous antibiotics). Conclusions: We suggest that the described technique is reproducible and reliable. It rarely requires modification and facilitates successful postoperative outcomes with a low complication rate. The adoption of this surgical technique allows surgeons to approach complex knee arthroplasty with confidence in the appropriate exposure of anatomy, facilitating subsequent steps in their arthroplasty procedures.

A new procedure for load-shortening and -elongation data for progressive collapse method

Jonathan Downes,Gökhan Tansel Tayyar,Illia Kvan,정준모 대한조선학회 2017 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.9 No.6

Progressive Collapse Method (PCM) has been broadly applied to predict moment-carrying capacity of a hull girder, however accuracy of PCM has not been much studied. Accuracy of PCM is known to be dependent on how Load-Shortening and -Elongation (LSE) curve of a structural units are well predicted. This paper presents a new procedure to determine LSE datum based on box girder Finite Element Analyses (FEAs) instead of using finite element model of stiffened panels. To verify reliability of FEA results, the simple box girder collapse test results are compared with FEA results of same box girders. It reveals one frame-based box girder model is sufficiently accurate in terms of ultimate strengths of the box girders. After extracting LSE data from the box girders, PCM-based moment-carrying capacities are compared with those from FEAs of the box girders. PCM results are found to be equivalent to FEAs in terms of moment-carrying capacity if accurate LSE data are secured. The new procedure is applied to well-known 1/3 scaled frigate full section. Very excellent moment-carrying capacity of frigate hull section is obtained from PCM with LSE data from box girder FEAs.

Vol.- No.2

Closed-form optimum tuning formulas for passive Tuned Mass Dampers under benchmark excitations

2016 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.17 No.2

This study concerns the derivation of optimum tuning formulas for a passive Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) device, for the case of benchmark ideal excitations acting on a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) damped primary structure. The free TMD parameters are tuned first through a non-linear gradient-based optimisation algorithm, for the case of harmonic or white noise excitations, acting either as force on the SDOF primary structure or as base acceleration. The achieved optimum TMD parameters are successively interpolated according to appropriate analytical fitting proposals, by non-linear least squares, in order to produce simple and effective TMD tuning formulas. In particular, two fitting models are presented. The main proposal is composed of a simple polynomial relationship, refined within the fitting process, and constitutes the optimum choice. A second model refers to proper modifications of literature formulas for the case of an undamped primary structure. The results in terms of final (interpolated) optimum TMD parameters and of device effectiveness in reducing the structural dynamic response are finally displayed and discussed in detail, showing the wide and ready-to-use validity of the proposed optimisation procedure and achieved tuning formulas. Several post-tuning trials have been carried out as well on SDOF and MDOF shear-type frame buildings, by confirming the effective benefit provided by the proposed optimum TMD.
