Foods from Mayan Communities of Yucatán as Nutritional Alternative for Diabetes Prevention

Jonatan Jafet Uuh Narvaez,Maira Rubı Segura Campos 한국식품영양과학회 2020 Journal of medicinal food Vol.23 No.4

The increase in the prevalence of diabetes has become a severe problem around the world; mainly affecting indigenous communities as the Mayan of Yucatán in Mexico. Because of the high rates of poverty and insufficient health services in this ethnic group, inexpensive and accessible treatments are necessary. Some plant foods grown in traditional Mayan agricultural systems have antidiabetic potential. Our objective was to present a review of plant foods with nutritional alternatives for diabetes prevention from traditional agricultural systems in Mayan communities of Yucatán. This review reports the hypoglycemic, antihyperglycemic, and antidiabetic activities of leaves, fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes, and tubercles grown in milpas and home gardens of Mayan communities. Some plant foods have antidiabetic effect in vitro, in vivo, and in clinical studies. Some plant foods grown in traditional Mayan agricultural systems have antidiabetic potential. The inclusion of these plant foods in the diet can serve in the treatment of diabetes.

      • A Methodological Shift in Building Design through Development of Collaborative Design Platforms

Schumacher, Jonatan,Naugle, Matthew Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat Korea 2014 International journal of high-rise buildings Vol.3 No.4

This paper introduces two platforms created by the development team at CORE studio, Thornton Tomasetti's global innovation studio. Collaborative platforms change the way that parties communicate and develop projects. Wikipedia is one of many great examples for a platform that supports collaborative development of a product - the world's largest encyclopedia. In the AEC industry, no such platform exists that can be used for collaborative development of a building project, and hence, information exchange between the parties involved, and modeling programs used in a project is slow and opaque. The platforms introduced in this paper allow for much greater transparency at all stages of the building design process, and hence improve the flow of information between parties involved in the process, both firm-internal and external. While traditionally, the use of a large number of different modeling and analysis platforms is hard to manage by a project team; this paper introduces methods that strengthen the design process by using a multitude of programs needed in the different building design phases.

Pd supported catalyst for gas-phase 1,2-dichloroethane abatement: Efficiency and high selectivity towards oxygenated products

        Zouhair Boukha,Jonatan González-Prior,Beatriz de Rivas,Juan R. González-Velasco,Rubén López-Fonseca,José I. Gutiérrez-Ortiz 한국공업화학회 2018 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.57 No.-

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) support has been synthesised and impregnated with different amounts of Pd. Theprepared Pd/HAP catalysts have been thoroughly characterised by BET, XRD, TEM, UV–visible–NIR, FTIR,XPS, CO2-TPD and NH3-TPD techniques and tested in the DCE oxidation reaction. The characterisation of the catalysts has revealed a clear evolution of the Pd species structure, byincreasing the Pd content, from highly dispersed tetrahedral coordinated Pd2+ to larger Pd2+ speciesparticles adopting square planar geometry. The latter seems to be partially encapsulated by the HAPsupport. In DCE oxidation reaction the Pd/HAP system has shown an activity comparable to that of conventionalsystem (Pd/alumina). However, the former has proved high selectivity towards the production ofoxygenated products (COx (CO2 and CO)). Notably, in contrast to Pd/alumina, the DCE oxidation does notyield vinyl chloride intermediate product over Pd/HAP. This catalytic behaviour has been related to themoderate acidity of HAP compared to that of alumina together with its interaction with the Pd activephase. This report, then, considers that Pd(x)/HAP could be presented as a good alternative to thosereported in the available literature.

Neonatal Mice Spinal Cord Interneurons Send Axons through the Dorsal Roots

        Osuna-Carrasco Laura Paulina,Dueñas-Jiménez Sergio Horacio,Toro-Castillo Carmen,De la Torre Braniff,Aguilar-García Irene,Alpirez Jonatan,Castillo Luis,Dueñas-Jiménez Judith Marcela 한국뇌신경과학회 2022 Experimental Neurobiology Vol.31 No.2

Spontaneous interneuron activity plays a critical role in developing neuronal networks. Discharges conducted antidromically along the dorsal root (DR) precede those from the ventral root’s (VR) motoneurons. This work studied whether spinal interneurons project axons into the neonate’s dorsal roots. Experiments were carried out in postnatal Swiss-Webster mice. We utilized a staining technique and found that interneurons in the spinal cord’s dorsal horn send axons through the dorsal roots. In vitro electrophysiological recordings showed antidromic action potentials (dorsal root reflex; DRR) produced by depolarizing the primary afferent terminals. These reflexes appeared by stimulating the adjacent dorsal roots. We found that bicuculline reduced the DRR evoked by L5 dorsal root stimulation when recording from the L4 dorsal root. Simultaneously, the monosynaptic reflex (MR) in the L5 ventral root was not affected; nevertheless, a long-lasting after-discharge appeared. The addition of 2-amino-5 phosphonovaleric acid (AP5), an NMDA receptor antagonist, abolished the MR without changing the after-discharge. The absence of DRR and MR facilitated single action potentials in the dorsal and ventral roots that persisted even in low Ca2+ concentrations. The results suggest that firing interneurons could send their axons through the dorsal roots. These interneurons could activate motoneurons producing individual spikes recorded in the ventral roots. Identifying these interneurons and the persistence of their neuronal connectivity in adulthood remains to be established.
