Comparison of Different Fibers for In Vitro Production of Short Chain Fatty Acids by Intestinal Microflora

        Joanne L.,Anne M. Pylkas,Lekh Raj Juneja 한국식품영양과학회 2005 Journal of medicinal food Vol.8 No.1

The fermentation of dietary fiber in the large intestine and the by-products of this fermentation are thought toprotect against colonic diseases. As it is difficult to measure the fermentation of dietary fiber in an intact animal, in vitro tech-niques have been developed to compare the fermentability of various dietary fibers. The objective of this project was to com-pare short chain fatty acid (SCFA) production with different fibers in an in vitrofermentation model. A wide range of com-mercially available dietary fiber sources was compared for SCFA production. Fibers were fermented with a fecal innoculumfor 0, 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 hours. SCFAs were measured by gas chromatography. SCFA production varied among the fibersources. Hydrolyzed guar gum and galactomannan produced the greatest amounts of total SCFAs. Butyrate production washigher with the fiber sources than the glucose control. Acetate production was less for psyllium than the other fibers. Thus, different dietary fiber sources are more readily fermented by fecal microflora. These differences most likely affect the phys-iological differences seen among dietary fiber sources.

      • Links to Prosocial Factors and Alpha Asymmetry in Adolescents during Violent and Non-Violent Video Game Play

Joann Lianekhammy,Ronald Werner Wilson 한국아동학회 2015 Child studies in Asia-Pacific context Vol.5 No.2

The present study examined electrical brain activations in participants playing three different video games. Forty-five adolescents between the ages of 13-17 (M=14.3 years, SD=1.5) were randomly assigned to play either a violent game, non-violent game, or brain training game. Electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded during video game play. Following game play, participants completed a questionnaire measuring prosocial personality. Results show an association between prosocial personality factors and differential patterns of brain activation in game groups. Adolescents with higher empathy playing the brain training game were positively correlated with frontal asymmetry scores, while empathy scores for those in non-violent and violent game groups were negatively linked to frontal asymmetric activation scores. Those with higher scores in helpfulness in the non-violent game group showed a positive association to left hemisphere activation. Implications behind these findings are discussed in the manuscript.

The CD28-B7 Family in Anti-Tumor Immunity: Emerging Concepts in Cancer Immunotherapy

        Joanne Leung,Woong-Kyung Suh 대한면역학회 2014 Immune Network Vol.14 No.6

The interactions between B7 molecules and CD28-family receptorsare crucial in the regulation of adaptive cellularimmunity. In cancer, the aberrant expression of co-inhibitoryB7 molecules has been attributed to reduced anti-tumor immunityand cancer immune evasion, prompting the developmentof cancer therapeutics that can restore T cell function. Murine tumor models have provided significant support forthe targeting of multiple immune checkpoints involvingCTLA-4, PD-1, ICOS, B7-H3 and B7-H4 during tumorgrowth, and clinical studies investigating the therapeutic effectsof CTLA-4 and PD-1 blockade have shown exceptionallypromising results in patients with advanced melanomaand other cancers. The expression pattern of co-inhibitoryB7 ligands in the tumor microenvironment has also beenlargely correlated with poor patient prognosis, and recentevidence suggests that the presence of several B7 moleculesmay predict the responsiveness of immunotherapies that relyon pre-existing tumor-associated immune responses. Whilemonotherapies blocking T cell co-inhibition have beneficialeffects in reducing tumor burden, combinatorial immunotherapytargeting multiple immune checkpoints involved invarious stages of the anti-tumor response has led to themost substantial impact on tumor reduction. In this review,we will examine the contributions of B7- and CD28-familymembers in the context of cancer development, and discussthe implications of current human findings in cancer immunotherapy.

The Symbol of “the Winding Stair” and the Style of the Later Yeats

Joanne Chia 한국예이츠학회 2017 한국예이츠 저널 Vol.53 No.-

This paper studies an intentional structure of interpretation through his symbol of “the winding stair” that reflects a form of imagination that would be read, quite literally, in Yeats’s own terms. T. S. Eliot has argued that Yeats as we know him today would be as defined by his later maturity as he had been by the promise of his early work. Perceiving Yeats’s art in this manner shows a poet at full capacity, one whose legacy might have been otherwise limited by a successful early lyrical career. It was what he did to emphasize the development of the poetic process that would allude to a romantic inspiration that allowed the later prose and poetry to gain an importance that even surpassed the promise of his early lyrical work in terms of the development of poetic themes central to his work.

Performance Modelling of Adaptive VANET with Enhanced Priority Scheme

( Joanne Mun-yee Lim ),( Yoongchoon Chang ),( Mohamadyusoff Alias ),( Jonathan Loo ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2015 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.9 No.4

In this paper, we present an analytical and simulated study on the performance of adaptive vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) priority based on Transmission Distance Reliability Range (TDRR) and data type. VANET topology changes rapidly due to its inherent nature of high mobility nodes and unpredictable environments. Therefore, nodes in VANET must be able to adapt to the ever changing environment and optimize parameters to enhance performance. However, there is a lack of adaptability in the current VANET scheme. Existing VANET IEEE802.11p`s Enhanced Distributed Channel Access; EDCA assigns priority solely based on data type. In this paper, we propose a new priority scheme which utilizes Markov model to perform TDRR prediction and assign priorities based on the proposed Markov TDRR Prediction with Enhanced Priority VANET Scheme (MarPVS). Subsequently, we performed an analytical study on MarPVS performance modeling. In particular, considering five different priority levels defined in MarPVS, we derived the probability of successful transmission, the number of low priority messages in back off process and concurrent low priority transmission. Finally, the results are used to derive the average transmission delay for data types defined in MarPVS. Numerical results are provided along with simulation results which confirm the accuracy of the proposed analysis. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MarPVS results in lower transmission latency and higher packet success rate in comparison with the default IEEE802.11p scheme and greedy scheduler scheme.

      • Analysing NOx and soot formations of an annular chamber with various types of biofuels

Joanne Zi Fen, Lim,Nurul Musfirah, Mazlan Techno-Press 2022 Advances in aircraft and spacecraft science Vol.9 No.6

The rapid decrease of fossil fuel resources and increase of environmental pollution caused by aviation industries have become a severe issue which leads to an increase in the greenhouse effect. The use of biofuel becomes an option to alleviate issues related to unrenewable resources. This study presents a computational simulation of the biofuel combustion characteristics of various alternative fuels in an annular combustion chamber designed for training aircraft. The biofuels used in this study are Sorghum Oil Methyl Ester (SOME), Spirulina Platensis Algae (SPA) and Camelina Hydrotreated Esters and Fatty Acids (CHEFA). Meanwhile, Jet-A is used as a baseline fuel. The fuel properties and combustion characteristics are being investigated and analysed. The results are presented in terms of temperature and pressure profiles in addition to the formation of NOx and soot generated from the combustion chamber. Results obtained show that CHEFA fuel is the most recommended biofuel among all four tested fuels as it is being found that it burns with 37.6% lower temperature, 15.2% lower pressure, 89.5% lower NOx emission and 8.1% lower soot emission compared with the baseline fuel in same combustion chamber geometry with same initial parameters.
