        The Crisis of Thai Democracy : Analysis and Evaluation

        Language, like culture, changes all the time. It is created, established, and eventually declines just like any cultures would. As a result of social and cultural revolution, new languages are created, i.e., academic language, language for specific purposes, etc. Among these new languages is slang, where new, colorful words and expressions are created and used for a short period of time and then gradually decline. From its unique and importance, the purpose of this article is to study the development of slang words and expression used by teenagers and the media such as radio, television, magazine, and computer during 1997-2002. These slang words and expression are then analyzed and categorized according to their types, word formation, origins, and meaning. Some of the slangs created during the political chaos in April and May 2010 are also added in this article. The slang words in this collection are divided into three different types: genuine slang, pseudo-slang, and compound slang.

      • Performance Comparison of AODV and OLSR for MANET

        In this paper present performance comparison of AODV and OLSR for mobile ad hoc network. Though mobile ad hoc network (MANET) routing protocols have been extensively studied through simulation. We perform extensive simulations using NS-2 simulator. In particular, We look at average throughput as performance parameters while varying various network parameters such as number of nodes and pause time under different area1000x1000 ㎡ and 1500x1500 ㎡. Our studies have shown that AODV better OLSR in terms of average throughput.

        A An Error Analysis of Thai Writing of Third Year Thai-major Exchange Students from Department of Asian Languages and Culture, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in 2009

        This research aimed to study errors in Thai writing of Third Year Thai-major Exchange Students from Department of Asian Languages and Culture, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, People’s Republic of China. The subjects of this study were 22 exchange students who had studied Thai at the Department of Thai and Eastern Languages, Faculty of Humanities, Srinakharinwirot University in the second semester of the academic year 2009. Data for the error analysis were gathered from 132 pieces of Thai composition and the detailed research data would be shown in descriptive analysis format. The research showed that those students have problems in the following five areas: 1. Positions of Vowels and Tone Mark. Three types of mistakes were found. Displacement of vowel position only was most often found and it was followed by the tone mark displacement. Displacement of both vowel and tone marks was least commonly found. 2. Application of Silent Mark. Five types of common mistakes found in the use of silent mark (aka Ka-Ran in Thai) were listed in order of frequency: misuse of first character, misuse of last character, vowel misusage, tone mark misusage, and silent mark misusage. 3. Word Choice. Seven types of common mistakes found in word choice were listed in order of frequency: miscellaneous misusage, verb misusage, noun misusage, adjective misusage, preposition misusage, classifier misusage and conjunction misusage. 4. Sentence Formation. Four types of mistakes often found in sentence formation were listed in order of frequency: redundant words in sentence, foreign language-influenced sentence formation, lack of important words in sentence, and words ordering 5. Space and Paragraph. Three types of mistakes in space and paragraph were listed in order of frequency: hyphen misusage, spacing misusage, and incorrect paragraphing. Researcher would apply the research result to improve students’ writing skills so that they could proficiently write their research paper when they go back to study in their Thai-Major in the Department of Asian Languages and Culture, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, People’s Republic of China.

        The Enhancement of Thai Language Usage Competencies in Accordance with Identity of Study Fields in Panyapiwat Institute of Management

        The research sample consists of 276 purposively selected third-year students from three faculties who registered for additional studies in Semester 1.2 at Panyapiwat Institute of Management (PIM), and the purposes of this research were as follows; (1) to enable the students to enhance their Thai language skills and Thai culture experience; (2) to help the students practice using Thai language for more effective communication; and (3) to enable the students to apply Thai language knowledge and skills effectively in their work performance. Research Results: It was found that the overall pre-test mean score of the whole sample group was 25.69. When pre-test mean scores of students in the three faculties were considered, it was found that students in the Faculty of Management Science had the highest pre-test mean score (28.31), followed by that of students in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (26.18), and that of students in the Faculty of Business Administration (24.75), respectively. As for the post-test mean scores, it was found that the overall post-test mean score of the research sample was 31.46. When post-test mean scores of students in the three faculties were considered, it was found that students in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology had the highest post-test mean score (37.17), followed by that of students in the Faculty of Management Science (32.36), and that of students in the Faculty of Business Administration (28.34), respectively. Regarding the results of comparison between the pre-learning and postlearning achievement scores, the overall result showed that the postlearning achievement score was higher than the pre-learning achievement score at the .01 level of statistical significance. This result indicated that the provision of learning experience to the learners achieved its predetermined goal. งานวิจัยนีมี้วัตถุประสงค์ ดังต่อไปนี ้คือ เพื่อให้นักศึกษาได้เพิ่มพูนประสบการณ์ทาง ทักษะภาษา และวัฒนธรรมไทย ฝึกทักษะการใช้ภาษาเพื่อการสื่อสารให้มีประสิทธิภาพ ยิ่งขึน้ และนำความรู้ทักษะภาษาไทยไปใช้ในการปฏิบัติงานได้อย่างเกิดประสิทธิผล ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ในภาพรวม กลุ่มตัวอย่างมีผลสัมฤทธิ์ก่อนเรียน (Pre test) มี คะแนนเฉลี่ยก่อนเรียน 25.69 คะแนน เมื่อพิจารณาแยกตามคณะ คณะวิทยาการ จัดการมีคะแนนเฉลี่ยก่อนเรียนสูงที่สุด (คะแนนเฉลี่ย 28.31) รองลงมาได้แก่ คณะ วิศวกรรมศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี (คะแนนเฉลี่ย 26.18) และคณะบริหารธุรกิจ (คะแนน เฉลี่ย 24.75) คะแนนผลสัมฤทธิ์หลังเรียนของกลุ่มตัวอย่างในภาพรวม พบว่า กลุ่ม ตัวอย่างมีคะแนนเฉลี่ยหลังเรียน 31.46 คะแนน เมื่อพิจารณาแยกตามคณะ พบว่า คณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีมีคะแนนเฉลี่ยหลังเรียนสูงที่สุด (คะแนนเฉลี่ย 37.17) รองลงมาได้แก่ คณะวิทยาการจัดการ (คะแนนเฉลี่ย 32.36) และคณะ บริหารธุรกิจ (คะแนนเฉลี่ย 28.34) สำหรับผลการวิเคราะห์คะแนนพัฒนาการพบว่า ในภาพรวมมีคะแนนพัฒนาการ เพิ่มขึน้ จากก่อนเรียนเฉลี่ยคิดเป็นร้อยละ 15.46 โดยมีคะแนนพัฒนาการต่ำสุดร้อยละ -29.17 และสูงสุดร้อยละ 95.74 ซึ่งคณะที่มีคะแนนพัฒนาการเฉลี่ยเพิ่มขึน้ มากที่สุด ได้แก่คณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี มีคะแนนพัฒนาการเพิ่มขึน้ ร้อยละ 29.89 รองลงมาได้แก่คณะวิทยาการจัดการที่มีคะแนนพัฒนาการเพิ่มขึน้ ร้อยละ 12.81 และ คณะบริหารธุรกิจที่มีคะแนนพัฒนาการเพิ่มขึน้ ร้อยละ 9.09 ส่วนผลการวิเคราะห์เปรียบเทียบคะแนนผลสัมฤทธิ์ระหว่างก่อนเรียนและหลังเรียน พบว่า ในภาพรวม ผลสัมฤทธิ์หลังเรียนสูงกว่าก่อนเรียนอย่างมีนัยสำคัญที่ระดับ .01 ซึ่ง แสดงให้เห็นว่าการจัดปร ...

        A Study of Speed Reading and Reading Comprehension Efficiency of International Students Enrolling in a Thai Language Course in the 2011 Academic Year in the Academic : Cooperation Program at the Faculty of Humanities, Srinakharinwirot University

        The purpose of “A Study of Speed Reading and Reading Comprehension Efficiency of International students Enrolling in a Thai Language Course in the 2011 Academic Year in the Academic Cooperation Program at the Faculty of Humanities, Srinakharinwirot University” is to suggest guidelines for teaching speed reading and reading comprehension efficiency skills to foreign students and for developing those skills for foreign students studying Thai Language. The sample group and population consist of 27 students from Japan, the Republic of China, and Korea. They are intended population. The result shows that the students’ average speed of reading is between 1.85 – 2.44 minutes. The reading test that takes the least time is Reading Test 5. In this test, the students are asked to identify the word that uses the same ending sound as the one in the question. The average speed is 1.85 minutes. The test that takes the longest time is the test on reading 5-digit numbers. The average speed is 2.44 minutes. By using F-test, the result of the analysis of the difference in the students’ reading speed for 6 different tests shows the statistically significant difference of .01. As for the study of the students’ reading comprehension efficiency, the test designed by a graduate student majoring in Teaching Thai as Foreign Language is used. This test has been revised and undergone the evaluation and defense process, and has passed the research criteria for its efficiency. The test consists of 6 topics: Thai family, Temple and Thai Ways of Living, Songkran Day, Nang Nak Phrakhanong, Royal Ploughing ceremony, and Krai Thong. It is found that on the Royal Ploughing ceremony topic, the student’s pre and post-class reading comprehension efficiency shows the statistically significant difference of .01. There are no statistically significant differences among other topics. When compares the students’ pre and post-class reading comprehension efficiency, it is found that the students’ pre-class reading speed is longer than their post-class speed, with the statistically significant difference of .01 on all topics.

        Comparison of 2 root surface area measurement methods: 3-dimensional laser scanning and cone-beam computed tomography

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the use of 3-dimensional (3D) laser scanning and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) as methods of root surface measurement. Materials and Methods: Thirty teeth (15 maxillary first premolars and 15 mandibular first premolars) from 8 patients who required extractions for orthodontic treatment were selected. Before extraction, pre-treatment CBCT images of all the patients were recorded. First, a CBCT image was imported into simulation software (Mimics version 15.01; Materialise, Leuven, Belgium) and the root surface area of each tooth was calculated using 3-Matic (version 7.01, Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). After extraction, all the teeth were scanned and the root surface area of each extracted tooth was calculated. The root surface areas calculated using these 2 measurement methods were analyzed using the paired t-test (P<.05). Correlations between the 2 methods were determined by calculating the Pearson correlation coefficient. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to assess intraobserver reliability. Results: The root surface area measurements (230.11±41.97 mm2) obtained using CBCT were slightly greater than those (229.31±42.46 mm2) obtained using 3D laser scanning, but not significantly (P=.425). A high Pearson correlation coefficient was found between the CBCT and the 3D laser scanner measurements. The intraobserver ICC was 1.000 for 3D laser scanning and 0.990 for CBCT. Conclusion: This study presents a novel CBCT approach for measuring the root surface area; this technique can be used for estimating the root surface area of non-extracted teeth.
