        Effects of Recasts in SLA: A Review for Research Synthesis

        L2 researchers have been investigating the role and effect of recasts as a type of negative feedback in SLA. The present study reviews sixteen empirical studies on recasts from a synthetic perspective. Since there are many moderator factors which may reduce or enhance the effect of recasts, this study examined and compared the studies in terms of 1) definition of recasts, 2) learner factors (age, proficiency, and developmental readiness), 3) language factors (morphemes or type of L2 structures), and 4) measures. Findings indicate that overall, recasts play a facilitative role in SLA and that the degree of effectiveness is dependent on the operationalization of recasts and the moderator variables. Suggestions are made for future research on recasts and their synthesis.

        Radiographic Evaluation of Limb Bone Development in Miniature Porcine

        미니돼지의 긴 뼈의 뼈끝(epiphysis) 성장에 대한 연구를 위해 상완골, 요골, 척골, 대퇴골, 경골의 근위 및 원위뼈끝 부위를 중심으로 방사선 촬영을 실시하였다. 실험에 이용된 미니돼지의 연령대는 4주, 8주, 12주, 20주, 40주, 48주, 96주, 144주령으로 총 58마리였다. 뼈 성장과정에 대한 평가는 Owada & Sutow가 제안한 11가지 기준을 토대로 하였다. 긴 뼈에서 이차뼈발생중심은 4주령에서 40주령까지 빠른 성장을 보였고, 그 이후 96주령까지는 초기보다 느린 성장을 보였다. 가장 빠른 뼈끝 유합시기는 96주령으로 근위 요골, 근위 및 원위 대퇴골에서 관찰되었다. 미니돼지의 일반적인 긴 뼈의 완전한 뼈끝 유합은 144주령에 나타났으며 근위 상완골, 근위 및 원위 척골, 원위 요골, 그리고 근위 경골에서 관찰되었다. Epiphyseal development in the long bones was studied radiographically in minipigs. Radiographs of the proximal and distal epiphyses of humerus, radius, ulna, femur and tibia were obtained at 4, 8, 12, 20, 40, 48, 96 and 144 weeks of age in total 58 minipigs. The assessment of maturity process was made in accordance with the criteria proposed by Owada and Sutow. The secondary ossification centers developed rapidly from 4 weeks of age to 40 weeks of age, and gradually thereafter until 96 weeks of age. The earliest epiphyseal fusion was apparent in the proximal radius, proximal and distal femur at 96 weeks of age. The complete fusion of the epiphyseal line in the long bones was evident on 144 weeks of age and was observed in most long bones such as the proximal humerus, the proximal and distal ulna and the distal radius, and the proximal tibia in minipigs.

        Use of Antioxidants to Prevent Cyclosporine A Toxicity

        Cyclosporine A (CsA) is a potent immunosuppressor that is widely used in transplant surgery and the treatment of several autoimmune diseases. However, major side effects of CsA such as nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, neurotoxicity and cardiovascular diseases have substantially limited its usage. Although molecular mechanisms underlying these adverse effects are not clearly understood, there is some evidence that suggests involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In parallel, protective effects of various antioxidants have been demonstrated by many research groups. Extensive studies of CsA-induced nephrotoxcity have confirmed that the antioxidants can restore the damaged function and structure of kidney. Subsequently, there have appeared numerous reports to demonstrate the positive antioxidant effects on liver and other organ damages by CsA. It may be timely to review the ideas to envisage the relationship between ROS and the CsAinduced toxicity. This review is comprised of a brief description of the immunosuppressive action and the secondary effects of CsA, and a synopsis of reports regarding the antioxidant treatments against the ROSlinked CsA toxicity. A plethora of recent reports suggest that antioxidants can help reduce many CsA’s adverse effects and therefore might help develop more effective CsA treatment regimens.

        Role of Cyclophilin A during Oncogenesis

        Cyclophilins (Cyps) are ubiquitously expressed proteins that are evolutionarily conserved. CypA is the most abundant among the Cyps and is expressed in the cytosol. With its chaperone and PPIase activities, CypA contributes to the maintenance of correct conformation of nascent or denatured proteins and also provides protection against environmental insults. Also, its expression is induced in response to a wide variety of stressors including cancer. Upregulation of CypA in small cell lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma has been reported. In some cancers a correlation between CypA overexpression and malignant transformation has been established. While molecular partners of CypA that promote cancer development are yet to be discovered, various mechanisms have been proposed to account for the cytoprotective functions of CypA during cancer development. CypA may promote the survival of cells under the stressful condition of cancer. CypA may well be essential for maintaining the conformation of oncogenic proteins,signalling proteins for cell proliferation, antiapoptotic components, transcription factors, or cell motility regulatory proteins. Antioxidant effects of CypA, which have been suggested by some researchers, may also become critical to reactive oxygen species (ROS) creating an oncogenetic environment. Developing new CypA inhibitors for therapeutics has been surmised from the cytoprotective functions of CypA and its overexpression in many cancer types. Therefore, CypA can be further investigated as a useful tool for early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of human cancers.

      • Predicting the Infectious Disease Spread Using Floating Population Data in Seoul, South Korea

        Emerging of global infectious diseases threat to worldwide induced numerous patients through person to person infection. In previous study, we investigated effects of traveling nationwide using expressway data on the spread of H1N1 influenza virus in Korea during 2009–2010. As a result, influenza epidemic patterns of the 2009 were correlated with some region traffic flow. In this study, we focused on Seoul which region is a highest density of population in Korea. Also using system dynamics-based simulation of the spread of an infectious disease in each of the 25 districts in Seoul was performed. Consequently, the decrease in the number of infected people in the district with a large floating population size was more significant than that with a high population density. This study is meaningful as it visualized the number of infected people on the map, which includes actual geographical information and the changes over time in the number of individuals that belong to S, I, and R classes of population. Also mathematical model based on Korea unique traffic and population movement information could be used. These results can be applying additional population and traffic data in the future, and support making decisions when establishing an effective infectious disease control strategy.

      • A Knowledge Integration Model for Corporate Dividend Prediction

        Dividend is one of essential factors determining the value of a firm. According to the valuation theory in finance, discounted cash flow (DCF) is the most popular and widely used method for the valuation of any asset. Since dividends play a key role in the pricing of a firm value by DCF, it is natural that the accurate prediction of future dividends should be most important work in the valuation. Although the dividend forecasting is of importance in the real world for the purpose of investment and financing decision, it is not easy for us to find good theoretical models which can predict future dividends accurately except Marsh and Merton (1987) model. Thus, if we can develop a better method than Marsh and Merton in the prediction of future dividends, it can contribute significantly to the enhancement of a firm value. Therefore, the most important goal of this study is to develop a better method than Marsh and Merton model by applying artificial intelligence techniques.

      • PKB phosphorylates p27, impairs its nuclear import and opposes p27 - mediated G1 arrest

        PKB activation may contribute to resistance to antiproliferative signals and breast cancer progression in part by impairing nuclear import and action of p27. PKB transfection caused cytoplasmic p27 accumulation and cytokine resistance. The nuclear localization region of p27 contains a PKB/Akt consensus site at threonine 157 and p27 phosphorylation by PKB impaired its nuclear import in vitro. PKB/Akt phosphorylated wild type p27 but not p27T157A. PKB activation led to cytoplasmic mislocalization of p27WT but p27T157A remained nuclear. In PKB activated cells, p27WT failed to cause G1 arrest, while the anti proliferative effect of p27T157 A was not impaired. Cytoplasmic p27 was seen in 41% (52/128) of primary human breast cancers in association with PKB activation. Thus, we show a novel mechanism whereby PKB impairs p27 function that is associated with an aggressive phenotype in human breast cancer.

        Minireview on Recent Antibody-Related NMR Studies

        In a relatively short period, monoclonal antibodies have made dramatic success as therapeutics for various diseases such as cancers and autoimmune diseases and become an important development items for many pharmaceutical companies. In order to develop antibody drug, it is important to investigate the structural characteristics of both antibody and antigen. NMR studies on antibody are extremely challenging due to big huddles such as a big size of protein and isotope labeling, nevertheless, several studies have been reported in 10 years. Here, we analyzed 95 papers dealing with antibody-related NMR studies reported in recent 10 years. We categorized papers into 3 types: 1) structural characterization of antibody, 2) structural characterization of antigen using antibody, 3) amyloidosis caused by fragment of antibody. This work would shed new light on antibody-related NMR studies.
