        Environmental Microbiology and Engineering : Microbial Community Dynamics in Batch High-Solid Anaerobic Digestion of Food Waste Under Mesophilic Conditions

        Microbial community shifts, associated with performance data, were investigated in an anaerobic batch digester treating high-solid food waste under mesophilic conditions using, a combination of molecular techniques and chemical analysis methods. The batch process was successfully operated with an organic removal efficiency of 44.5% associated with a biogas yield of 0.82 L/g VSremoval. Microbial community structures were examined by denaturing gel gradient electrophoresis. Clostridium and Symbiobacterium organisms were suggested to be mainly responsible for the organic matter catabolism in hydrolysis and acidogenesis reactions. The dynamics of archaeal and methanogenic populations were monitored using real-time PCR targeting 16S rRNA genes. Methanosarcina was the predominant methanogen, suggesting that the methanogenesis took place mainly via an aceticlastic pathway. Hydrogenotrophic methanogens were also supported in high-solid anaerobic digestion of food waste through syntrophism with syntrophic bacterium. Microbial community shifts showed good agreement with the performance parameters in anaerobic digestion, implying the possibility of diagnosing a high-solid anaerobic digestion process by monitoring microbial community shifts. On the other hand, the batch results could be relevant to the start-up period of a continuous system and could also provide useful information to set up a continuous operation.

        Materialism and purchase-evoked happiness: A moderated mediation model of purchase type and purchase’s impact on self

        Although it is suggested that materialism value leads to more purchase-evoked happiness, limited research has investigated the underlying mechanism of the relationship. The purpose of the paper is to fill the research gap, demonstrating how materialism increases purchaseevoked happiness. Two surveys with a student sample (n = 112) and an Amazon Mechanical Turk sample (n = 207) were conducted. Bootstrapping analysis was used to examine the data. The findings identify the mediating role of purchase’s impact on self plays between materialism and purchase-evoked happiness, and reveal that purchase type (material vs. experiential purchase) moderates the mediation. For material purchases, higher-materialism value leads to more perceived impact of the purchases on self, which in turn, results in more purchase-evoked happiness. For experiential purchases, there is no such mediation effect of the purchases’ impact on self between materialism and purchase-evoked happiness. This paper is the first research providing empirical support for materialists’ belief that material possessions influence them personally and identifying the mechanism under which materialism increases purchase-evoked happiness. It expands the research on materialism and purchase type by showing that materialism as a personal value interplays with purchase type in influencing how happiness is obtained from purchases.

        Experimental study on vibration characteristics of double-helical gearbox with isolators

        A power closed double-helical gear test rig with isolators was created to investigate the dynamic response characteristics of the double-helical gearbox. Experimentally, the vibration accelerations of the bearing seat, machine foot, and base were tested under various working conditions. Experiments validated the validity of the generalized finite element theorybased dynamic model of the double-helical gear system. The study found that the unloaded vibration of the gearbox is greatly caused by the shaft frequency excitation due to assembly/manufacturing errors. As the load increases, the assembly/manufacturing errors are compensated by the system deformation. In the acceleration spectrum of the bearing seat, it is found that the tooth surface modification can reduce the amplitude of the mesh frequency, but the bearing outer ring frequency components are increased. That is, the axial movement of double-helical gears is intensified. Furthermore, the closer the excitation frequency is to the natural frequency of the base, the worse the vibration isolation effect is.

        Improved Meet-in-the-Middle Attacks on Crypton and mCrypton

        Crypton is a SP-network block cipher that attracts much attention because of its excellent performance on hardware. Based on Crypton, mCrypton is designed as a lightweight block cipher suitable for Internet of Things (IoT) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). The security of Crypton and mCrypton under meet-in-the-middle attack is analyzed in this paper. By analyzing the differential properties of cell permutation, several differential characteristics are introduced to construct generalized δ-sets. With the usage of a generalized δ-set and differential enumeration technique, a 6-round meet-in-the-middle distinguisher is proposed to give the first meet-in-the-middle attack on 9-round Crypton-192 and some improvements on the cryptanalysis of 10-round Crypton-256 are given. Combined with the properties of nibble permutation and substitution, an improved meet-in-the-middle attack on 8-round mCrypton is proposed and the first complete attack on 9-round mCrypton-96 is proposed.

      • A Novel Face Recognition Algorithm Based on Improved Retinex and Sparse Representation

        In recent years, face recognition technology has been widely used as a kind of important modern biological recognition technology. As one of the main factors that affect the recognition rate, the illumination variation has attracted the attention of many researchers. In order to improve the face recognition under illumination variation condition, a novel face recognition algorithm based on improved Retinex and sparse representation is proposed in this paper. Retinex algorithm can be used to solve the problem of face illumination variation in face recognition, but it is easy to produce ‘halo’ phenomenon. In order to improve the face recognition rate under the change of illumination condition. In this paper, firstly, in order to eliminate the interference of illumination on face recognition, we apply the Retinex that is improved by partial differential equations to face image processing. Then, sparse representation is used to extract face feature vector, and the voting method is used to realize the face recognition. Finally, the performance of the algorithm is tested by 3 standard face databases. The results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the face recognition rate under different illumination conditions, and has good robustness to illumination.

      • Time-Varying Amplitude-Frequency Characteristics Analysis of VSC Internal Voltage under Grid Fault

        As the voltage source converters (VSCs) are widely used as the important interface between the new energy applications and the power systems, the transient characteristics of VSC have great influence on the operation of the modern power systems. In this paper, internal voltage concept is introduced to represent the external characteristics of VSC. The amplitude/frequency characteristics of VSC internal voltage under non-severe grid fault and severe grid fault are analyzed and compared. The results show that under non-severe grid fault, the amplitude/frequency characteristics of VSC internal voltage are periodic time-varying. And the amplitude and frequency are the linear combination of modes of the close-loop system, while in severe grid fault, the characteristics of amplitude and frequency are aperiodic time-varying and are decided by the modes and the nonlinear elements. The results and conclusion are validated in Matlab/Simulink.

      • Investigation on the Storage Method of Blurred Art Image with Retrieval and Processing

        For the Chinese ancient art, stone carving experiences the etching of the natural environment and become blurred. How to process and store their images becomes a quite important problem. In this paper, an image process and storage method have been proposed. In this method, the blurred image will be firstly pretreated. Then, relative images which have high similarity with the blurred image will be retrieved in the database. Thirdly, blurred images are processed with template matching method to improve the clarity. Finally, processed images and the original images are stored in the dataset with classification. A blurred art image is used as the example to verify the validity of the method. The blurred image contains a person and a door. The query method is proposed with higher speed and precision, which is due to the pretreatment and mixed subgraph method. The pretreatment can improve the precision of the query content, while the mixed subgraph method can provide the completeness of the query content. Both the mechanism improves the retrieval precision. The blurred images excavated in the soil are often with pitting and rust, which is corresponding to the noise in the image process. In the image process step, the image is fixed up when the blurry points are big enough. The verification confirms the validity of the method.

        The Performance Promotion of Polyphenylene Sulfide Fibers Based on the Hygroscopic and Dyeable Characteristics

        The hygroscopic and dyeable polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) composite fiber was prepared using a twin-screwextruder and a melt spinning machine. A new dyeing process was proposed and the moisture absorption and dyeingmechanism of the composite fiber was analyzed. The results show that sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) is uniformly dispersed inthe PPS matrix and is compatible with PPS at the macromolecular level. The thermal properties of the composite fibers arebasically unchanged, and the crystallinity is slightly reduced. With the increase of PAAS content, the normal moisture regainof the composite fiber reached 2.11 % from 0.21 %, and the contact angle decreased from 73.8 ° to 52.3 °. Under the newdyeing technology, the dyeing rate of the composite fiber reached 93 %, and the washing fastness was grade 5. Themechanism of hygroscopicity and dyeing of macromolecular space networks and polyelectrolyte was proposed.
