The study aimed to measure serum fatty acids (FAs) composition in HIV carrier patients and compare it with non-HIV carrier patients. The FAs composition was measured by gas chromatography as follows: four saturated FAs myristic acid (14:0), palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0), and docosanoic acid (22:0); four monounsaturated FAs 7-hexadecenoic acid (16:1 n-9), palmitoleic acid (16:1 n-7), oleic acid (18:1 n-9), and vaccenic acid (18:1 n-7); and three polyunsaturated FAs linoleic acid (18:2 n-6), dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (20:3 n-6), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n-3). We reported herein lower (P < .05) DHA concentration (by 40%) in the serum of HIV carrier patients than in non-HIV carrier patients. This FA has a pivotal role as a precursor of anti-inflammatory molecules with beneficial effects on metabolism, cardiovascular system, and immunological system. Even though most clinical studies reported beneficial effects of DHA supplementation in HIV carrier patients, this issue remains under debate. Further investigations then require to fully clarify the role of DHA in preventing or alleviating the comorbidities associated with HIV infection.

Cinnamomum cassia is a medicinal plant whose use has demonstrated benefits on body weight, blood pressure, glucose, and lipids. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of C. cassia on arterial stiffness and endothelial dysfunction (ED) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was carried out in 18 subjects aged 40–65 years, with a diagnosis of T2DM of one year or less since diagnosis and treated with Metformin 850 mg daily. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either C. cassia or a placebo in 1000 mg capsules, thrice a day, before each meal for 12 weeks. At baseline and after 12 weeks of intervention, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity and Flow Mediated Dilation were measured, as well as body weight, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (BP), fasting glucose (FG), glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol, respectively, triglycerides, creatinine, and transaminases. The Mann–Whitney U test for differences between groups and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for intragroup differences were used, and a P ≤ .05 was considered statistically significant. After C. cassia administration, statistically significant reductions in body weight (81.4 ± 10.4 kg vs. 79.9 ± 9.0 kg, P = .037), BMI (30.6 ± 4.2 kg/m2 vs. 30.1 ± 4.2 kg/m2, P = .018), and HbA1c (53 ± 5.4 mmol/mol vs. 45 ± 2.1 mmol/mol, P = .036) were observed. No changes statistically significant on arterial stiffness, ED, FG, BP, and lipids were observed. C. cassia administration decreases body weight, BMI, and HbA1c without statistically significant changes on arterial stiffness, ED, FG, BP, and lipids. CTR Number: NCT04259606

The antinociceptive activity of icariside E4, adihydrobenzofuran-type lignan isolated from Tabebuiaroseo-alba (Ridley) Sandwith (Bignoniaceae) bark, wasevaluated in mice by using chemical and thermal models ofnociception. Intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of crude T. roseo-alba bark extract and its methanol fraction inhibitedacetic acid-induced abdominal constriction in mice. Furthermore,i.p. administration of 0.1, 1, and 10 mg/kg oficariside E4 reduced the number of writhes evoked by aceticacid injection by 46.9, 82.3, and 66.6 %, respectively. Icariside E4 administration had no effect in the first phase ofthe formalin test, but it reduced nociceptive behavior in thesecond phase as indicated by a reduction in the licking time. Icariside E4 did not modify thermal nociception in the hotplatetest model, suggesting that it had a peripheral antinociceptiveaction. The antinociceptive effect of icariside E4 inthe writhing test was reversed by pre-administration ofglibenclamide, but not of naloxone, atropine, yohimbine, orhaloperidol. Together, these results indicated that theantinociceptive activity of icariside E4 from T. roseo-alba inmodels of chemical pain occurred through ATP-sensitiveK? channel-dependent mechanisms.

Antimicrobial effects of Melipona beecheiihoney have been attributed to diverse factors, in this sense, certain components such as proteins and phenolics couldexplain relevant aspects of its antimicrobial activity. Theaim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activityof phenolic and protein extracts from M. beecheii honeyagainst two bacterial pathogens: Staphylococcus aureusand Escherichia coli. With respect to phenolic content,HPLC analysis allowed the identification of phenolic acidslike chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and flavonoids likecatechin, myricetin, quercetin and apigenin. On the otherhand, seven bands with molecular weight from 7.6 to95 kDa were detected in protein extract by SDS-PAGEsystem. It was determined the antibacterial activity of bothextracts, with MICs lower than 145 lg/mL and 60 lg/mLfor the phenolic and protein extracts respectively. Theseresults indicate that phenolic and protein components of M. beecheii honey contribute significantly to the antibacterialactivity.

The purpose of this work was to confirm the effectiveness of the bacterium Klebsiella sp. 3S1 for theremoval of lead ions from aqueous solution in a fixed-bed column. The results provided evidence thatthe bacterial biofilm formation on the support clearly improved the lead biosorption capability of thesystem. FTIR, SEM and TEM techniques provided factual evidence of the role of the bacterial biofilm onlead biosorption and the different mechanisms involved, such as cell surface binding and cytoplasmicbioaccumulation. The dynamic behavior of the column in continuous mode was well-established through breakthroughcurves, with experimental data fitting using different mathematical models, especially the Yang model. Up to 70 mg of lead was retained per gram of microbial biofilm in each cycle without loss of biosorptioncapacity compared to previous work in batch mode. In addition, the bacteria maintained theireffectiveness when the cells were inactivated after acid desorption cycles. The column was reused fourtimes after biosorbent regeneration with an elution efficiency of 99% showing that it is appropriate forindustrial applications. The use of a Klebsiella sp. 3S1 biofilm immobilized on a porous support incommercial biofilters for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater could be a competitive option.

Considering the importance of the connection between languages and culture this article examines the necessity for inclusion of an intercultural perspective in the learning process to achieve better results in the foreign language classroom. It becomes even more relevant if we take into account the cultural differences between Korea and the language of study. After recognizing and assessing the relevant factors that take part in learning we chose one of them (Confucianism) as one of the key elements that will help the native teacher to understand the cultural patterns of the students and their learning styles. We stress the importance for the educator to know idiosyncratic behaviours in order to avoid misunderstandings in communication and "cultural shock". This research is oriented for practical applications. For that, we analysed the different interpretations of "the silence in the classroom", in the culture of the Spanish language teacher as compared with the culture of Korean students; that is a conclusive example that the educator should approach the teaching practice bearing in mind the cultural specifics of the students; that means, from an intercultural perspective.

Herein, we have fabricated silver (Ag) over selenium (Se) to explore its enriched electrochemical performancetowards the simultaneous detection of nitro-aromatic drugs (nitrofurantoin (NFT) and Pnitrophenol(P-NP)). Due to its synergistic effect, Ag/Se modified GCE showed excellent electrocatalyticactivity compared to other electrodes. Well-defined and divergent reduction peaks wereobtained at 0.49 V (NFT) and 0.85 V (P-NP) with a detection range of 0.9 V at Ag/Se/GCE. It withholdsan extensive linear range of 0.1 to 210 mM for NFT and 0.1 to 150 mM for P-NP with a nanomolar leveldetection limit of 23.87 nM L1 & 7.82 nM L1; an appraisable sensitivity of 1.138 mA mM1 cm2 &2.86 mA mM1 cm2 for NFT and P-NP, respectively. Interestingly, the electrode possesses a high selectivityin the presence of biomolecules, nitro drugs, and metal ions. Examination of nitro-aromatic drug contaminationon water sources shows a massive peril to human life and marine environs due to its adverse hazardouseffects. Further, the fabricated Ag/Se-based electrochemical sensor was exposed to variousenvironmental aqueous samples to detect NFT& P-NP which has demonstrated an exquisite recoveryresults in practical feasibility. Thereby confirms that Ag/Se-based electrochemical sensors have boundlesspotential for ecological investigations and sensing applications.

Importance in the precise determination of Furazolidone (FZD) on biological, food, and water sampleswere established for regulating health and nutrition, diagnosis/treatment, pharmacological research, and food/drug quality monitoring. Thus, the sensitive and accurate determination of FZD is necessary. Here, we construct facile and low-cost Metal Titanate (MTiOx, M = Mn, Fe, Cu) as an electrode modifiervia a different one-step synthesis method. By the virtue of unique properties, MnTiO3 has been successfullyemployed in the electrochemical evaluation of FZD such as high active surface area (0.1252 cm2) andhigh electron transfer kinetics with low charge transfer resistance (Rct = 374.65 X) with good electrocatalytickinetic parameters. In this regard, MnTiO3 is employed in the electrochemical evaluation ofFZD through cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Differential Pulse Voltammetry (DPV) techniques. The proposedMnTiO3/GCE sensor shows exquisite electrochemical characteristics including a wide linear range(0.05 to 1101.6 lM), nanomolar detection limit (4.05 nM), and encouraging sensitivity (68.77 lA lM1cm2). Moreover, it also exemplifies exquisite selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and storage stabilitytherefore; MnTiO3 is employed in the practical feasibility analysis in various real samples, whichshows excellent recovery results.

In this work, platinum nanoparticles (Pt) decorated on a spinel group, zinc cobalt oxide (ZnCo2O4) 3-Dflower was intended to detect caffeine electrochemical sensor. Pt particles were used to enhance the performanceof hydrothermally prepared 3-D ZnCo2O4 flower. So Pt nanoparticles were decorated on eachthin nanosheet of self-assembled 3-D flower-like ZnCo2O4. The thin transparent nanosheet of theZnCo2O4 flower will benefit electrochemical sensors by simplifying its ion exchange. Therefore,Pt@ZnCo2O4 shows an excellent electrochemical conductivity, which promotes the caffeine-based sensor’srapid electrochemical oxidation. Using amperometric i-t at an applied potential of 1.45 V,Pt@ZnCo2O4 modified electrode shows widespread of two linear ranges (0.05 to 265.55 lM and 295.55to 757.55 lM) with a low detection limit (0.0114 and 0.01657 lM) and high sensitivity (3.419 and1.862 lA lM1 cm2). Moreover, good results were obtained for the real-time detection of caffeine insugar-free cola beverage and energy drink samples. Henceforth, the developed method could be an idealway to detect caffeine in real samples.
