<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A Co–B catalyst is used to generate hydrogen from alkaline aqueous <SUB>NaBH4</SUB> solutions. This study examined the properties of a Co–B catalyst prepared using different precursors (<SUB>CoCl2</SUB> and <SUB>CoSO4</SUB>) and <SUB>NaBH4</SUB>/<SUP>Co2+</SUP> mole ratios (0.67, 1.5, 3) at calcination temperatures of 130, 250 and 450<SUP>∘</SUP>C. As the calcination temperature was increased in <SUB>N2</SUB> atmosphere mixed with 1% air, the typical amorphous structure of Co–B disappeared and the X-ray diffraction peaks corresponding to <SUB>Co3</SUB><SUB>O4</SUB> became sharper. Metallic Co was formed when a <SUB>NaBH4</SUB>/<SUP>Co2+</SUP> mole ratio of 3 was used as the reductant with a corresponding reduction in the rate of <SUB>H2</SUB> generation. The highest level of <SUB>H2</SUB> generation (2400ml/ming) was obtained with <SUB>CoCl2</SUB> as the precursor, a <SUB>NaBH4</SUB>/<SUP>CO2+</SUP> mole ratio of 1.5 as the reductant, and a calcination temperature of 250<SUP>∘</SUP>C.</P>

The objective of this paper is to investigate the axial strength of concrete specimens strengthened by section enlargement. Experimental variable in this study is the strength difference between inner and outer concretes. Static loading test have been carried out on 8 types of specimens. The results obtained from test and analysis showed that the axial strength of specimens had been greatly influenced by the effect of Poisson’s ratio and the stress-strain relation of inner and outer concretes. An approach method to predict axial strength of concrete strengthened by section enlargement was suggested.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the behavior of reinforced concrete columns strengthened by section enlargement in consideration of long-term deformation. Experimental variables considered in this study are sustained-loading and new casting materials. Long-term deformation test and static loading test have been carried out on 7 types of specimens. The test results show that outer reinforced concrete column does not greatly influence the long-term deformation of inner reinforced concrete column due to creep and the column specimen under lower sustained load has larger load bearing capacity than that under larger sustained load.
Effect of Undaria pinnatifida Extract on Insulin Secretion from the Pancreas of Diabetic Rats

We found previously that Undaria pinnatifida extract has an effect of lowering blood glucose levels in diabetic rats. Therefore, an effect of Undaria pinnatifida extract on the insulin secretion directly from the pancreas was examined in this study. Neonatal diabetes were induced by intraperitoneal injection of Streptozotocin (100 ㎎/㎏ body weight) at age of day 1. Rats were fed a rodent pellet diet until they were grown to adults (age of 7 weeks). Rats having a fasting serum glucose level over 250 ㎎/dL were used in this feeding study and they were divided into two diet groups as follows; a diet with Undaria pinnatifida extract (5%) and a diet without this extract (control group). Fasting (12 hr) blood glucose and serum insulin levels were measured before and after feeding a diet with Undaria pinnatifida extract for 4 weeks. At the last day of feeding, in vitro pancreas perfusion was performed. Pancreas was stimulated with a perfusate without glucose during a period of 0~10 minutes and with a perfusate containing 200 ㎎/dL glucose during a period of 11~40 minutes. Insulin amount was measured using a radioimmuno assay. In results, amount of the insulin secreted from the pancreas in the diabetic rats fed Undaria pinnatifida extract was significantly greater than that in the diabetic control group during the periods of the equilibration period (0~10 min) and the first phase (11~20 min) of the insulin secretion (P<0.05). It is concluded that Undaria pinnatifida extract increases insulin secretion from the pancreas in the neonatal diabetic rats. Therefore, the blood glucose lowering effect of the Undaria pinnatifida extract may be elucidated by mechanisms with promoted insulin secretion from the pancreas in diabetic rats.
Development of Scabbed Concrete Treatment Technology Using Plasma Treatment Technology

Plasma melting technology uses electrical arc phenomena such as lightning to create hightemperature sparks of about 1,600 degrees or more to meet waste disposal requirements through treatment and reduction without distinguishing radioactive waste generated during nuclear power plant operation and dismantling according to physical characteristics. Decommissioning radioactive waste scabbed concrete occurs when polishing and cutting the contaminated structure surface to a certain depth. In this study, Scabbed concrete containing paint was confirmed for volume reduction and disposal safety using plasma treatment technology, and it is planned to be verified through continuous empirical tests.

The cellular composition and metabolic compounds of Leuconostoc mesenteroides ATCC 8293 were analyzed after cultivation in an anaerobic chemostat. The macromolecular composition was 24.4% polysaccharide, 29.7% protein, 7.9% lipid, 2.9% DNA, and 7.4% RNA. Its amino acid composition included large amounts of lysine, glutamic acid, alanine, and leucine. Elements were in the order of C > O > N > H > S. The metabolites in chemostat culture were lactic acid (73.34 mM), acetic acid (7.69 mM), and mannitol (9.93 mM). These data provide a first view of the cellular composition of L. mesenteroides for use in metabolic flux analysis.

Powered exoskeletons for people with complete paraplegia are subject to repetitive large impacts due to the recurrent ground contacts. Those impact forces not only deteriorate the ride comfort but also cause a serious damage to the musculoskeletal system of the human wearing the powered exoskeleton. To address the issue, a mechanism to absorb shock for powered exoskeletons are proposed in this paper. The proposed shock absorption mechanism was integrated into the WalkON Suit, a powered exoskeleton for complete paraplegics. To obtain the desired performance of the proposed mechanism, the gait pattern of the powered exoskeleton was also designed. The mechanism and gait pattern generation algorithm were verified from experiments with a human subject.
