        《만물진원》의 간행과 17∼18세기 유교 지식인의 반응 ―제10편 창조설을 중심으로

        This article compares and examines the responses of Chinese and Joseon Confucian intellectuals to the theory of Creation in Wanwu zhenyuan. Wanwu zhenyuan is an exclamation book written by Aleni, a Jesuit in China, that proves that the ‘true origin of all things’ is God and introduces the process of Creation. It has exerted considerable influence in China since its publication in Beijing in 1628. The doctrines of Wanwu zhenyuan caused animosity among local intellectuals. The reasons were many, but one of the main ones was the aggressive and exclusive attitude of the Jesuit missionaries toward the Confucian tradition and cultural authority. In particular, the notion of the Hell that even the ancient kings, the creators of Confucian civilization and bearers of truth, can not ascend to heaven seems to reinforce the resistance of Confucian intellectuals such as Huangzhen and Xudashou. In the 18th century, Joseon intellectuals who viewed Wanwu zhenyuan showed a different aspect from Chinese intellectuals in that they criticized it academically. After the Jinsan Incident in 1791, while the problem of Seohak became publicly debated at the national level and negative perceptions about it were strengthened, Nam Geukgwan and Hong Jeongha approached it carefully and dealt with it in the context of traditional knowledge. Their attitude can be said to be different from other anti-Seohak intellectuals who exclusively rejected Seohak before and after the Jinsan incident, and it can be said that they were far from the rigid atmosphere of the 19th century intellectual circle that completely denied Seohak and reproduced crude criticism.

        한국 국회의 이념성향 변화에 대한 패턴 탐색: 자동화된 텍스트 스케일링 방법의 적용

        이 연구는 국회 상임위원회 법제사법위원회 회의록을 분석 대상으로 자동화된 텍스트 분석 방법의 WORDFISH 알고리즘을 적용해 정치엘리트의 이념성향 변화 패턴을 추정하였다. 법제사법위원회의 경우 행정부 교체 전후의 간기(間期)에서 이념성향의 변화를 겪고 있었다. 한국 국회 내 이념성향의 변화는 미국의 경우에서처럼 정당을 중심으로 동시적으로 이루어지기보다는 한 시점의 이념성향에 대한 반응 혹은 집권 정부의 교체에 대한 반응에 따라 변화되고 있다. 법제사법위원회 회의록에 나타난 이념성향의 변화는 국회 대수별, 연도별 시기적 효과가 발생하지 않을 때 국회의원 소속 정당의 이념성향, 선수(選數) 등 개인의 특성 효과가 나타나고, 개인의 특성 효과가 나타나지 않을 때 시기 자체의 효과가 나타났다. 즉, 이념성향 변화를 추동하는 거시적 효과가 발생할 때 미시적 효과가 사라지고, 거시적 효과가 사라질 경우 미시적 효과가 나타난 것이 확인되었다. This study aimed to analyze the minutes of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, one of the standing committees of the Korean National Assembly, by applying the WORDFISH algorithm of automated text analysis to estimate the pattern of changes in the ideological orientation of the members of Korea’s political elite. The results of the analysis showed that the Legislation and Judiciary Committee generally undergoes changes in ideological orientation around the time of a major administrative change, especially during the period preceding a change up to the time of its implementation. Compared with the United States, where changes in the ideological orientation of the political elite occur simultaneously based on parties, changes in that of the political elite at the Korean National Assembly tend to occur in response to a certain transitional point in time or a change in the ruling government. What is especially noteworthy in terms of the ideological orientation reflected in the minutes of the Legislative Judiciary Committee is that the microscopic effect tends to disappear when the macroscopic effect occurs and, conversely, that the microscopic effect emerges once the macroscopic effect has disappeared. In other words, changes in the ideological orientation of the political elite appear to indicate the effect of a particular legislator’s individual characteristics when no effect is observed during a given term or year of the National Assembly, whereas they revealed the effect of a given time itself when no effects related with the individual characteristics of a legislator are discerned.

        Korean Students` English Speaking Anxiety and Their Coping Strategies

        This study aims to explore Korean ESL students’ degree of English speaking anxiety and how their perceptions and experiences of this anxiety vary with respect to their speaking proficiency. In addition, the study seeks to identify the language learning circumstances which may provoke the most and the least anxiety and to describe the strategies that students use to mitigate their own anxiety. Thirty-one students completed two questionnaires, a background questionnaire and an anxiety questionnaire, and six of them voluntarily participated in the follow-up interview. Descriptive analysis indicates that the degree of anxiety decreased with respect to language proficiency level in the following order: intermediate, advanced, and low. Moreover, the interview results reveal that students who felt high anxiety tended to be highly self-conscious about speaking English, whereas students with low anxiety had an inclination to be less affected by nervous feelings. All six interviewees reported that they felt the most anxious when having an oral presentation due to the fear of negative evaluation. Speaking with less competent learners and participating in group discussions turns out to be less anxiety-provoking to some students, which implies that careful classroom management can play a positive role in reducing students’ speaking anxiety.

        Effectiveness of Teacher and Peer Feedback : Through the Lens of Korean Tertiary Writing Classroom

        This classroom-based research attempted to explore whether teacher and peer feedback can be effectively implemented in an EFL writing classroom at the tertiary level. Characteristics of teacher and peer feedback, students’ use of feedback along with perceived usefulness, and complementing effects of teacher and peer feedback were analyzed. Twenty students enrolled in an academic writing course participated in the study. Students engaged in drafting, revising, and editing stages of writing under the process approach. Data gathered were essay drafts, a survey on teacher and peer feedback, and interviews. The study found that teacher and peer feedback included various categories (e.g., identification, suggestion) and areas (e.g., thesis, organization) of feedback, yet teacher feedback was more balanced than peer feedback. Students found both teacher and peer reviews helpful and recognized the benefits of each, but they favored and incorporated more of the teacher feedback. The interviews, however, revealed that most students appreciated peer feedback because they could learn new perspectives and expressions. Students also felt less obliged to accept all of peers’ comments, compared to teachers’ feedback, leading them to critically evaluate their usefulness. Active verbal interactions and in-depth trainings were suggested to make both types of feedback more meaningful.

      • Computation of Volume of Molecular Surface Using β-Complex

        Molecular surface of a protein is one of the most important geometric structures of the protein. Given a molecular surface, various molecular properties such as the area, volume, and density of a protein can be defined. Especially, the volume among the molecular properties is one of the fundamental properties for studying protein docking and folding. This paper presents an efficient and precise algorithm to compute the volume bounded by the molecular surface. It is based on β-complex which is an efficient data structure reflected the size difference among atoms of the protein in Euclidean metric.

        Benefits of the Process Approach in L2 Writing: From the Prospective Teachers" Perspectives

        The study explored the pedagogical benefits of and students’ perceived usefulness toward the process approach in second language writing. Twenty university students-prospective teachers of English in Korea-participated in this study, sharing their thoughts on the process approach after one semester of academic writing. As data, a survey, pre/post essay tests, and written reflections were collected. The study found that one semester of the process approach including teacher and peer feedback was helpful for improving students’ writing development in various areas, ranging from content to mechanics. Although students evaluated teacher feedback to be more useful than peer feedback on the survey, they appreciated the opportunity of learning different perspectives, writing styles, and expressions during the peer review. In their written reflections, students further showed willingness to utilize the process approach in their own writing class in the future.
