The SAURON project – XIX. Optical and near‐infrared scaling relations of nearby elliptical, lenticular and Sa galaxies

        Falcó,n‐,Barroso, J.,van de Ven, G.,Peletier, R. F.,Bureau, M.,Jeong, H.,Bacon, R.,Cappellari, M.,Davies, R. L.,de Zeeuw, P. T.,Emsellem, E.,Krajnović,, D.,Kuntschner, H.,McDermid, R. Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2011 MONTHLY NOTICES- ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY Vol.417 No.3

<P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>We present ground‐based MDM Observatory <I>V</I>‐band and <I>Spitzer</I>/InfraRed Array Camera 3.6‐<IMG src='/wiley-blackwell_img/equation/MNR_19372_mu1.gif' alt ='inline image'/>m‐band photometric observations of the 72 representative galaxies of the SAURON survey. Galaxies in our sample probe the elliptical E, lenticular S0 and spiral Sa populations in the nearby Universe, both in field and cluster environments. We perform aperture photometry to derive homogeneous structural quantities. In combination with the SAURON stellar velocity dispersion measured within an effective radius (σe), this allows us to explore the location of our galaxies in the colour–magnitude, colour–σe, Kormendy, Faber–Jackson and Fundamental Plane scaling relations. We investigate the dependence of these relations on our recent kinematical classification of early‐type galaxies (i.e. slow/fast rotators) and the stellar populations. Slow rotator and fast rotator E/S0 galaxies do not populate distinct locations in the scaling relations, although slow rotators display a smaller intrinsic scatter. We find that Sa galaxies deviate from the colour–magnitude and colour–σe relations due to the presence of dust, while the E/S0 galaxies define tight relations. Surprisingly, extremely young objects do not display the bluest (<I>V</I>−[3.6]) colours in our sample, as is usually the case in optical colours. This can be understood in the context of the large contribution of thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars to the infrared, even for young populations, resulting in a very tight (<I>V</I>−[3.6])–σe relation that in turn allows us to define a strong correlation between metallicity and σe. Many Sa galaxies appear to follow the Fundamental Plane defined by E/S0 galaxies. Galaxies that appear offset from the relations correspond mostly to objects with extremely young populations, with signs of ongoing, extended star formation. We correct for this effect in the Fundamental Plane, by replacing luminosity with stellar mass using an estimate of the stellar mass‐to‐light ratio, so that all galaxies are part of a tight, single relation. The new estimated coefficients are consistent in both photometric bands and suggest that differences in stellar populations account for about half of the observed tilt with respect to the virial prediction. After these corrections, the slow rotator family shows almost no intrinsic scatter around the best‐fitting Fundamental Plane. The use of a velocity dispersion within a small aperture (e.g. <I>R</I>e/8) in the Fundamental Plane results in an increase of around 15 per cent in the intrinsic scatter and an average 10 per cent decrease in the tilt away from the virial relation.</P>

      • Cognitive-enhancing and antioxidant activities of iridoid glycosides from Scrophularia buergeriana in scopolamine-treated mice

        Jeong, E.J.,Lee, K.Y.,Kim, S.H.,Sung, S.H.,Kim, Y.C. North-Holland ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2008 european journal of pharmacology Vol.588 No.1

The cognitive-enhancing activities of E-harpagoside and 8-O-E-p-methoxycinnamoylharpagide (MCA-Hg) isolated from Scrophularia buergeriana were evaluated in scopolamine-induced amnesic mice by the Morris water maze and by passive avoidance tests. E-harpagoside and MCA-Hg significantly improved the impairment of reference memory induced by scopolamine in the Morris water maze test. The mean escape latency, the mean path length and swimming movement were also improved by both compounds. In passive avoidance test, E-harpagoside and MCA-Hg (2 mg/kg body weight, p.o.) significantly ameliorated scopolamine-induced amnesia by as much as 70% of the level found in normal control mice. Donepezil, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and the most widely used drug for AD treatment was employed as a positive control. The activity of acetylcholinesterase was inhibited significantly by E-harpagoside or MCA-Hg within the cortex and hippocampus to a level similar to that observed in mice treated with donepezil (2 mg/kg body weight, p.o.). Moreover, treatment with E-harpagoside or MCA-Hg to scopolamine-induced amnesic mice significantly decreased TBARS level which was accompanied by an increase in the activities or contents of glutathione reductase, SOD and reduced GSH. We believe these data demonstrate that E-harpagoside or MCA-Hg exerted potent cognitive-enhancing activity through both anti-acetylcholinesterase and antioxidant mechanisms.

      • Porphyromonas gingivalis HSP60 peptides have distinct roles in the development of atherosclerosis

        Jeong, E.,Kim, K.,Kim, J.H.,Cha, G.S.,Kim, S.J.,Kang, H.S.,Choi, J. Pergamon Press 2015 Molecular immunology Vol.63 No.2

Different epitope peptides of bacterial heat shock proteins may function as effector or regulatory molecules in autoimmune responses in infection-triggered atherosclerosis. We investigated the mechanisms for the distinct roles of two epitope peptides from Porphyromonas gingivalis heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) in atherogenesis with regard to peptide-specific T cell polarization relevant to (1) phenotype and cytokine profiles, (2) expression of transcription factors, and (3) role of antigen presenting dendritic cell subsets. Apolipoprotein E-knockout (ApoE KO) mice were immunized with peptide 14 or peptide 19 from P. gingivalis HSP60 prior to induction of atherosclerosis by infection with P. gingivalis plus a Western diet. Significant reductions in plaque/lipid droplet area and plasma cholesterol levels were observed in mice immunized with peptide 14, whereas the opposite phenomenon was evident in mice immunized with peptide 19. CD4+ T-cells polarized to the regulatory T-cell type in peptide 14-immunized group, whereas they polarized to the Th1 cells in peptide 19-immunized group; this observation was supported by the cytokine profiles characteristic to each T-cell phenotype. Significantly higher expression of Nr4a1 and Nr4a2 mRNA, transcriptional factors for regulatory T-cell type, were observed in peptide 14-immunized group. In contrast, the expression level of IFN-γ and T-bet mRNA, signaling molecules for Th1 cells, was higher in peptide 19-immunized group than in PBS-immunized group. In non-immunized wild mice, BMDC-derived CD11c+ dendritic cells have shown to stimulate Tregs significantly in antigen-nonspecific manner. However, each peptide antigen demonstrated a unique mode of preferential adoption of dendritic cell subsets. In conclusion, peptide 14 or peptide 19 from P. gingivalis HSP60, respectively, may play either an anti- or pro-atherogenic role in the ApoE KO mouse model of infection-triggered atherosclerosis through distinct mechanisms operating in the polarization of T cells.

The Effect Of Grain Size On The Mechanical Properties Of Aluminum

        Jeong, G.,Park, J.,Nam, S.,Shin, S.-E.,Shin, J.,Bae, D.,Choi, H. PAS 2015 ARCHIVES OF METALLURGY Vol.60 No.2

<B>Abstract</B><P>Although many studies have focused on the unique plastic deformation behavior of nanocrystalline aluminum (e.g., the positive deviation from Hall-Petch relation, the unusual yield-drop phenomenon in tensile mode, etc.), the data reported by different research groups are inconsistent with each other, possibly because of different fabrication processes. In this study, aluminum samples with a wide grain-size spectrum - from a few micrometers down to 100 nanometers - are manufactured by powder metallurgy. The grain size was measured by X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscope observation. Furthermore, the tensile behavior, which varied according to a grain size, is discussed with a comparison of the theoretical models.</P>

      • Anti-inflammatory effects of lindenenyl acetate via heme oxygenase-1 and AMPK in human periodontal ligament cells

        Jeong, G.S.,Lee, D.S.,Li, B.,Kim, J.J.,Kim, E.C.,Kim, Y.C. North-Holland ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2011 european journal of pharmacology Vol.670 No.1

The molecular basis for the anti-inflammatory effects of lindenenyl acetate (LA) was investigated in the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated human periodontal ligament (HPDL) cell model. LA concentration-dependently inhibited LPS-induced inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) derived nitric oxide (NO) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) derived prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production in HPDL cells. LA also attenuated the production of LPS-induced tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and IL-12. LA stimulated heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) protein expression and enzyme activity of HPDL cells in a dose-dependent manner. Pretreatment with the HO-1 inhibitor, tin protoporphyrin (SnPP), attenuated the inhibitory activities of LA on LPS-induced inflammatory NO, PGE2, IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-12 production. LA induced translocation of Nrf-2. Furthermore, an inhibitor of JNK MAPK abolished LA-induced HO-1 expression. LA exposure up-regulated the levels of phosphorylated adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and its upstream kinase activators, including LKB1 and Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase-II. Furthermore, compound C, a specific AMPK inhibitor, partially blocked the LA-induced anti-inflammatory effect. Taken together, these results indicate that LA has anti-inflammatory activity in HPDL cells that might be mediated by the HO-1, AMPK, JNK MAPK, and Nrf-2 pathways. Thus, LA may serve as a potential therapeutic agent in periodontal disease.

Englerin A-sensing charged residues for transient receptor potential canonical 5 channel activation

        Jeong, SeungJoo,Ko, Juyeon,Kim, Minji,Park, Ki Chul,Park, Eunice Yon June,Kim, Jinsung,Baik, Youngjoo,Wie, Jinhong,Cho, Art E.,Jeon, Ju-hong,So, Insuk The Korean Society of Pharmacology 2019 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.23 No.3

The transient receptor potential canonical (TRPC) 5 channel, known as a nonselective cation channel, has a crucial role in calcium influx. TRPC5 has been reported to be activated by muscarinic receptor activation and extracellular pH change and inhibited by the protein kinase C pathway. Recent studies have also suggested that TRPC5 is extracellularly activated by englerin A (EA), but the mechanism remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to identify the EA-interaction sites in TRPC5 and thereby clarify the mechanism of TRPC5 activation. TRPC5 channels are over-expressed in human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cells. TRPC5 mutants were generated by site-directed mutagenesis. The whole-cell patch-clamp configuration was used to record TRPC5 currents. Western analysis was also performed to observe the expression of TRPC5 mutants. To identify the EA-interaction site in TRPC5, we first generated pore mutants. When screening the mutants with EA, we observed the EA-induced current increases of TRPC5 abolished in K554N, H594N, and E598Q mutants. The current increases of other mutants were reduced in different levels. We also examined the functional intactness of the mutants that had no effect by EA with TRPC5 agonists, such as carbachol or $GTP{\gamma}S$. Our results suggest that the three residues, Lys-554, His-594, and Glu-598, in TRPC5 might be responsible for direct interaction with EA, inducing the channel activation. We also suggest that although other pore residues are not critical, they could partly contribute to the EA-induced channel activation.

      • Stent Thrombosis and Bleeding Complications After Implantation of Sirolimus-Eluting Coronary Stents in an Unselected Worldwide Population

        e-SELECT Investigators,Urban, P.,Abizaid, A.,Banning, A.,Bartorelli, A.L.,Baux, A.C.,Dzavik, V.,Ellis, S.,Gao, R.,Holmes, D.,Jeong, M.H.,Legrand, V.,Neumann, F.J.,Nyakern, M.,Spaulding, C.,Worthley, S Elsevier Biomedical 2011 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF CARDIOLOGY - Vol.57 No.13

Objectives: The aim of this study was to ascertain the 1-year incidence of stent thrombosis (ST) and major bleeding (MB) in a large, unselected population treated with sirolimus-eluting stents (SES). Background: Stent thrombosis and MB are major potential complications of drug-eluting stent implantation. Their relative incidence and predisposing factors among large populations treated worldwide are unclear. Methods: The SES were implanted in 15,147 patients who were entered in a multinational registry. We analyzed the incidence of: 1) definite and probable ST as defined by the Academic Research Consortium; and 2) MB, with the STEEPLE (Safety and efficacy of Enoxaparin in PCI) definition, together with their relation to dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) and to 1-year clinical outcomes. Results: The mean age of the sample was 62 +/- 11 years, 30.4% were diabetic, 10% had a Charlson comorbidity index ≥3, and 44% presented with acute coronary syndrome or myocardial infarction. At 1 year, the reported compliance with DAPT as recommended by the European Society of Cardiology guidelines was 86.3%. Adverse event rates were: ST 1.0%, MB 1.0%, mortality 1.7%, myocardial infarction 1.9%, and target lesion revascularization 2.3%. Multivariate analysis identified 9 correlates of ST and 4 correlates of MB. Advanced age and a high Charlson index were associated with an increased risk of both ST and MB. After ST, the 7-day and 1-year all-cause mortality was 30% and 35%, respectively, versus 1.5% and 10% after MB. Only 2 of 13,749 patients (0.015%) experienced both MB and ST during the entire 1-year follow-up period. Conclusions: In this worldwide population treated with ≥1 SES, the reported compliance with DAPT was good, and the incidence of ST and MB was low. Stent thrombosis and MB very rarely occurred in the same patient. (The e-SELECT Registry: a Multicenter Post-Market Surveillance; NCT00438919)

Amino acid residues in the Ler protein critical for derepression of the LEE5 promoter in enteropathogenic E. coli

        Su-Mi Choi,Jae-Ho Jeong,Hyon E. Choy,Minsang Shin 한국미생물학회 2016 The journal of microbiology Vol.54 No.8

Enteropathogenic E. coli causes attaching and effacing (A/E) intestinal lesions. The genes involved in the formation of A/E lesions are encoded within a chromosomal island comprising of five major operons, LEE1-5. The global regulator H-NS represses the expression of these operons. Ler, a H-NS homologue, counteracts the H-NS–mediated repression. Using a novel genetic approach, we identified the amino acid residues in Ler that are involved in the interaction with H-NS: I20 and L23 in the C-terminal portion of α-helix 3, and I42 in the following unstructured linker region.
