Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 244-254, 1999.-Obesity can be defined as a metabolic disease due to an increased state of fat tissues caused by an imbalance of calorie intake and use. Recently, in Korea by improvement and westernization of food intake, along with decrease in exercise activities, the prevalence of obesity has increased greatly. Our objectives were to study stability and effects of decrease in body fat by administering red ginseng compound preparation (known to have body fat decreasing effects in laboratory animals) to obesity patients on low calorie diets. Changes in weight and body fat were measured while carrying out calorie-restricted diets on patients for 4 weeks, then administering red ginseng compound preparation for another 4 weeks. The patients were 20 people whose BMI were 25kg/㎡ or over and whose percent body fat was also 30% or over when tested by bioelectrical conductivity. 1. Changes in weight were from 70.04kg(base line) to 67.43kg(after taking red ginseng compound preparation). 2. In similar sense, BMI decreased from 27.12kg/㎡(base line) to 26.56kg/㎡(after dieting), and further to 26.01kg/㎡ (after taking red ginseng compound preparation). The BMI seemed to decrease significantly compared to the baseline after the use of red ginseng compound. 3. Waist hip ratio was changed from 0.8858(base line) to 0.8728, but it was statistically insignificant. 4. The percent body fat was 35,16%(base line), 33.87%(after dieting), and 31.68%(after taking red ginseng compound preparation). 5. Complete blood cell count and blood chemisrty remained unaffected by the administration. 6. In concern to endocrinologic studies, T3 decreased from 118.7 to 98.2ng/dL, and T4 increased from 8.8 to 9.2㎕/ dL. Epinephrine showed a tendency to decreased from 0.27 to 0.25 ng/mL, and norepinephrine increased from 0.39 to 0.44ng/mL. 7. Leptin was not changed. 8. Some patients complained adverse effects; constipation(5 patients, may be due to diet therapy), fatigue (2 patients), pruritus(2 patients), flushing(s patients), dizziness(3 patients) and epigastric discomfort(2 patients). However their symptoms were mild, so medication did not stopped. In conclusion, loss of weight without significant side effects was observed during low calorie diet and red ginseng compound preparation administration. This is thought to be in relation to sympathetic nerve system rather than adrenal gland. Also, further long0term studies should be required, since the observed results were based on short-term changes in weight.
Synthesis and Characterization of Bandgap-modulated Organic Lead Halide Single Crystals

Single crystal of organic lead halide (CH3NH3PbX3; CH3NH+ 3 = methylammonium (MA) , X = Cl; Br; I) is the best candidate for material intrinsic property studies due to no grain boundary and high crystal quality than the film having a lot of grain boundary and surface defects. The representative crystallization methods are inverse temperature crystallization (ITC) and anti-solvent vapor assisted crystallization (AVC). Herein, we report bandgap modulated organic lead halide single crystals having a bandgap ranging from 2:1 eV to 3 eV with ITC and AVC methods. The bandgap modulation was achieved by controlling the solvents and chloride-to-bromide ratio. Structural, optical and compositional properties of prepared crystals were characterized. The results show that the crystals synthesized by the two crystallization methods have similar properties, but the halide ratios in the crystals synthesized by the AVC method are controlled more quantitatively than the crystals synthesized by ITC.

NAMPT regulates mitochondria biogenesis via NAD metabolism and calcium binding proteins during skeletal muscle contraction. JENB., Vol. 18, No. 3, pp.259-266, 2014 [Purpose]The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that muscle contraction induced NAD metabolism via NAMPT has on mitochondrial biogenesis. [Methods]Primary skeletal muscle cells were isolated from the gastrocnemius in C57BL/6 mice. The muscle cells were stimulated by electrical current at 1Hz for 3 minutes in conditions of normal or NAD metabolism related inhibitor treatment.NAD/NADH level, Sirt1 and mitochondria biogenesis related signal factor’s changes were examined in normal or NAD metabolism related inhibitor treated cells. [Results]Electrical stimulation (ES) induced muscle contractions significantly increased NAD/NADH levels, NAMPT inhibitor FK-866 inhibited ES-induced NAD formation, which caused SIRT1 expression and PGC-1α deacetylationto decrease. Moreover, NAMPT inhibition decreased mitochondrial biogenesis related mRNA, COX-1 and Tfam levels. Along with AMPK inhibitor, compound C decreases SIRT1 expression, PGC-1α deacetylation and muscle contraction induced mitochondrial biogenesis related mRNA increment. These results indicated that the AMPK-NAMPT signal is a key player for muscle contraction induced SIRT1 expression and PGC-1α deacetylation, which influences mitochondrial biogenesis. Inhibition of the AMPK upregulator, Camkkβ, STO-609 decreased AMPK phosphorylation and SIRT1 expression but did not decrease PGC-1α deacetylation. However, CAMKII inhibition via AIP decreased PGC-1α deacetylation. [Conclusion]In conclusion, the results indicate that NAMPT playsan important role in NAD metabolism and mitochondrial biogenesis. However, mitochondrial biogenesis is also controlled by different calcium binding protein signals including Camkkβ and CAMKII. The power conversion eciency of perovskite solar cells has reached 23.3%. Although significant developments have been made through intensive studies, the stability issue is still challenging. Passivation of perovskite solar cells with a transparent polymer provides better stability; however, there are a few disadvantages of organic polymer such as low thermal stability, weak adhesion and the lack of water retention ability. In this work, we prepared a dual Parylene-F/C layer with 3- methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, A-174, to combine the advantages of organic and inorganic materials. As a result, A-174 treated dual Parylene-F/C layer demonstrated improved passivation effects compared to a single Parylene layer due to the strong binding of Parylene and the water retention ability by SiO2 formed from A-174. This synergetic effects can be expanded to the combination of other organic materials and organosilane compounds.
Temperature Driven Phase Transition of Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskite Single Crystals

Organic-inorganic halide perovskite single crystals undergo phase transition of being cubic, tetrag- onal, or orthorhombic depending on the temperature. We investigated the CH3NH3PbBr3xIx sin- gle crystals grown by the inverse temperature crystallization method with temperature-dependent UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence. From the temperature-dependent absorption measure- ment, the optical band gap is extracted by derivation of absorption spectrum fitting and Tauc plot. In our results, CH3NH3PbBr3xIx single crystals show that an abrupt change in optical band gap, PL peak position and intensity appears around 120 K - 170 K regions, indicating the phase transition temperature.

Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of a hybrid prophylactic strategy to prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in pediatric liver transplantation (LT) patients. Methods: CMV DNAemia was regularly monitored by quantitative nucleic acid amplification test (QNAT) and was quantified in all children. CMV infection and disease were defined according to the International Consensus Guidelines. The hybrid strategy against CMV infection consisted of universal 3-week prophylaxis and preemptive treatment of intravenous ganciclovir regardless of the recipient's serostatus. Results: A total of 143 children who underwent living donor LT were managed using the hybrid strategy. The overall incidence of CMV infection by QNAT was 48.3% (n=69/143). The highest CMV DNAemia positivity was observed in 49.2% (n=60/122) of children in the D+/R+ group, followed by 46.7% (n=7/15) in the D+/R- group. CMV disease was noted in 26.1% (n=18/69) patients. Forty-three (62.3%) children had undergone preemptive therapy consisting of intravenous ganciclovir. No symptomatic patients developed tissue-invasive disease, resulting in no CMV-associated mortality. Conclusion: The incidence of CMV infection was high in pediatric LT patients despite the hybrid strategy. However, tissue-invasive disease in pediatric LT did not occur.
