Effects of reducing agents on the electrochemical properties of the prepared manganese oxide powders

        Chung-Hsien Wu,Jeng-Shin Ma,Chung-Hsin Lu 한국물리학회 2012 Current Applied Physics Vol.12 No.4

Manganese oxide powders with high specific capacitance were successfully fabricated via a simple redox reaction at room temperature. The reducing agents used for the redox reaction significantly affected the oxidation states and the electrochemical properties of the prepared manganese oxide powders. As C2H5OH was used as the reducing agent, high Mn3+ content and high amount of hydroxide were observed in the prepared manganese oxide powders. In addition, the molar ratios of KMnO4 and C2H5OH also influenced the electrochemical properties of the prepared manganese oxide powders. When the molar ratio of KMnO4 and C2H5OH was 1:40, the specific capacitance of the prepared manganese oxide was as high as 402 F/g. These results of the electrochemical analysis showed that, adjusting the molar ratios of KMnO4 and C2H5OH demonstrated to be an effective method for controlling the electrochemical characteristics of manganese oxide powders.

Synthesis and characterization of nickel–manganese oxide via the hydrothermal route for electrochemical capacitors

        Chung-Hsien Wu,Jeng-Shin Ma,Chung-Hsin Lu 한국물리학회 2012 Current Applied Physics Vol.12 No.4

Nano-sized and well dispersed manganese oxide and nickelemanganese oxide (NieMneO) powders are synthesized via the hydrothermal route. The addition of nickel ions significantly affects the morphology, particle size and the electrochemical properties of the obtained powders. Adding nickel ions results in a significant change in the shape of the powders from rod-like to plate-like. The electrochemical analysis of the electrode reveals that the specific capacitance of the synthesized powders is greatly increased with the addition of nickel ions. When the hydrothermal temperature is increased to 125 ℃, the specific capacitance also increases to 284 F/g and decreases by about 4% after 1500 cycles of charge and recharge. NieMneO is considered to be a promising material for the electrodes used in electrochemical capacitors. Improving the Sensitivity of a High-Tc SQUID Magnetometer with a Serial Array

        Chiu-Hsien Wu,Hong-Chang Yang,J. C. Chen,C. T. Chiang,C. Y. Chen,Herng-Er Horng,J. T. Jeng,K. L Chen,M. J. Chen 한국물리학회 2006 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.48 No.5I

To pursue a high-reproducibility and high-quality SQUID for high-Tc superconducting applications, we have designed and fabricated a flip-chip magnetometer as a sensor for measuring weak magnetic signals. The magnetometer consists of a serial SQUID magnetometer coupled to a flux focuser. The SQUIDs are connected in series, thereby increasing the peak-to-peak value of the voltage-flux transfer function, V. A flux focuser is employed to increase the effective area of the SQUID. The serial SQUID array has high-quality device characteristics. High-Tc SQUID magnetometers exhibiting a magnetic field sensitivity of 45 fT/Hz1/2 in the white region and 200 fT/Hz1/2 at 1 Hz have been demonstrated in this work. The flip-chip SQUID magnetometer shows a sufficiently high sensitivity to record magnetocardiograms.

A Mobile P2P Semantic Information Retrieval System with Effective Updates

        ( Chuan-ming Liu ),( Cheng-hsien Chen ),( Yen-lin Chen ),( Jeng-haur Wang ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2015 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.9 No.5

As the technologies advance, mobile peer-to-peer (MP2P) networks or systems become one of the major ways to share resources and information. On such a system, the information retrieval (IR), including the development of scalable infrastructures for indexing, becomes more complicated due to a huge increase on the amount of information and rapid information change. To keep the systems on MP2P networks more reliable and consistent, the index structures need to be updated frequently. For a semantic IR system, the index structure is even more complicated than a classic IR system and generally has higher update cost. The most well-known indexing technique used in semantic IR systems is Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI), of which the index structure is generated by singular value decomposition (SVD). Although LSI performs well, updating the index structure is not easy and time consuming. In an MP2P environment, which is fully distributed and dynamic, the update becomes more challenging. In this work, we consider how to update the sematic index generated by LSI and keep the index consistent in the whole MP2P network. The proposed Concept Space Update (CSU) protocol, based on distributed 2-Phase locking strategy, can effectively achieve the objectives in terms of two measurements: coverage speed and update cost. Using the proposed effective synchronization mechanism with the efficient updates on the SVD, re-computing the whole index on the P2P overlay can be avoided and the consistency can be achieved. Simulated experiments are also performed to validate our analysis on the proposed CSU protocol. The experimental results indicate that CSU is effective on updating the concept space with LSI/SVD index structure in MP2P semantic IR systems.

Studies on the Processing Properties and Interactions Between Porcine Blood Proteins and Waxy Rice Starch During Making Porcine Blood Cake

        Lin, Chin-Wen,Yang, Jeng-Huh,Chu, Hsien-Pin,Su, Ho-Ping,Chen, Hsiao-Ling,Huang, Chia-Cheong Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2001 Animal Bioscience Vol.14 No.3

The physiochemical properties and interactions between porcine blood and waxy rice were determined. Addition of calcium chloride (0.15%) improved acceptability of blood cake and increased the gelatinization degree of waxy rice. The water-holding capacity of porcine blood gel (blood/water=60/40, v/v), extent of absorption and gelatinization of waxy rice, and scanning electron microscopy showed that blood protein matrix and waxy rice are competitors for holding water in the cooking procedure. Non-haem iron content increased linearly (R=0.95) when heating temperature rose. The presence of blood proteins caused increasing of peak temperature (Tp) of gelatinization in differential scanning calorimetric thermal gram, The microstnlcture of plasma proteins and haemoglobin appeared continuous changes, and interacted with surface of waxy rice flour in terms of network and mosaic form, respectively. The electrophoretic patterns revealed an interaction between plasma proteins and waxy rice glutelin and haemoglobin when heated could be found at temperatures above $60^{\circ}C$.

Resonant-Frequency-Dependent Flux Noise of a High-TC rf SQUID Coupled to a Substrate Resonator

        Ji-Cheng Chen,Hong-Chang Yang,Chiu-Hsien Wu,Herng-Er Horng,Jen-Tzong Jeng,Kuen-Lin Chen 한국물리학회 2006 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.48 No.5I

In the recent development of a high-TC rf SQUID magnetometer, Zhang et al. used a SrTiO3 substrate resonator with a YBCO thin film flux concentrator on it. The effective area was improved by a flux concentrator. However, there was no study of the resonant frequency of the substrate resonator. In this work, the frequency-dependent flux noise of a high-TC rf SQUID coupled to a substrate resonator was investigated. The results were analyzed with the noise theory. The optimization of the SQUID with a substrate resonator and its flux noise are discussed.

Role of Salivary Immune Parameters in Patients With Primary Sjögren’s Syndrome

        Yu-Hung Hung,Yung-Hung Lee,Pei-Pei Chen,Yuan-Zhao Lin,Chia-Hui Lin,Jeng-Hsien Yen 대한진단검사의학회 2019 Annals of Laboratory Medicine Vol.39 No.1

Background: Several factors, including clinical manifestations and laboratory data, have been used to evaluate the disease activity of Sjögren’s syndrome (SS). We investigated saliva indicators of disease activity in primary SS patients. Methods: We enrolled 138 Taiwanese patients with primary SS and 100 Taiwanese normal controls. Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-17A, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and rheumatoid factor (RF)-IgA levels in saliva samples were measured using ELISA or fluorescent enzyme-linked immunoassay. Serum IgG, IgA, and IgM levels were measured by nephelometry. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) was measured with an automatic ESR analyzer. The t-test and Pearson correlation test were used. Results: IL-6 level was higher in primary SS patients than in normal controls (14.23±14.77 vs 9.87±7.32, P=0.012), but there were no significant differences in IL-17A, TNF-α, and RF-IgA levels. In primary SS patients, IL-6 level correlated weakly with ESR and IgG levels (r=0.252, P=0.015, and r=0.248, P=0.017, respectively), and TNF-α level correlated weakly with IgG level (r=0.231, P=0.024). Conclusions: IL-6 may play a role in SS pathogenesis. Saliva IL-6 might be an indicator of disease activity in primary SS patients.
