<P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>To determine whether curcumin induces expression of the defensive enzyme heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and protects cells against oxidative stress in cultured human retinal pigment epithelial cells.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Effective concentrations and toxicities of curcumin were determined after 3 h of curcumin treatment with the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Confluent human retinal pigment epithelium cell lines (ARPE-19) were preincubated with curcumin and oxidatively challenged with H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB>. HO-1 expression was determined with western blot analysis. To confirm the protective role of HO-1 in oxidative stress, small interfering RNA (siRNA) against HO-1 or inhibitor of HO-1 was treated with curcumin in retinal pigment epithelium cells. Intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were measured with flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. Apoptosis was evaluated with Annexin V-fluoroscein isothiocyanate staining.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Curcumin had little cytotoxicity at concentrations less than 30 μM, and HO-1 expression was the highest at the 15 μM concentration. At this concentration, curcumin also increased the cytoprotective effect against the oxidative stress of H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> through the reduction of ROS levels in human retinal pigment epithelial cells. Curcumin’s effect on the reduction of ROS was mediated by the increase in HO-1 expression.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Curcumin upregulated the oxidative stress defense enzyme HO-1 and may protect human retinal pigment epithelial cells against oxidative stress by reducing ROS levels.</P>

배경 : 국내에서 개발된 방사선 동위원소 Holmium-166 (166Ho)은 주로 베타선을 방출하며, 166Ho을 부착한 풍선도자를 이용하여 돼지 관상동맥 재협착 모형에서 풍선확장술 후 신생내막 증식을 전신적 부작용 없이 안전하고 효과적으로 억제하였음을 보고한 바 있다. 본 연구에서는 돼지 관상동맥 스텐트 재협착 모형에서 스텐트 시술 후 신생내막 증식에 의한 재협착 병변을 166Ho 부착 풍선도자를 이용하여 치료하여 그 효과를 관찰하고자 하였다. 방법

본 연구의 목적은 근관내 약제로 사용되는 수산화칼슘의 제거방법이 근관충전 후 치근단 미세누출에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위함이다. 70개의 발거된 단근치를 엔진구동형 ProFile로 근관형성한 후 수용성 수산화칼슘 제제를 1주일간 적용하고 두 군으로 나누어 각기 다른 방법으로 제거하였다. A군은 NaOCI로 근관세정만을 시행하였으며, B군은 근관형성 시 사용된 file보다 한 단계 큰 크기의 ProFile을 사용하여 근관을 재형성한 후 NaOCI로 세척하였다. 근관충전 후 전기화학적 방법으로 24일 동안 치근단 누출을 측정, 비교하였다. 본 연구의 결과 수산화 칼슘 제거를 위한 두가지 방법은 근관충전후 치근단 미세누출에 있어서 차이가 없음을 알 수 있었다. This study evaluated the effect of two different calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)_(2)) paste removal techniques on the apical leakage of canals obturated with gutta percha cones and sealer after removing a Ca(OH)_(2) dressing using an electrochemical method. Seventy extracted single-rooted teeth were instrumented on with Profile rotary files under NaOCI irrigation. Fifty-eight canals were filled with calcium hydroxide paste, which was then removed using one of the following two techniques. In group A, calcium hydroxide was removed using only NaOCI irrigation, and in group B, the canals were re-prepared with a Profile rotary files-one size larger than the previous instrument and were irrigated with NaOCI. In both groups, the root surfaces were coated twice with nail varnish from CEJ to an area 4㎜ away from the apex after canal obturation. Apical leakage was measured using an electrochemical method for 24 days. All the specimens showed leakddffqage that increased markedly in the first three days. There was no significant difference between the two groups (p > 0.05). The effect of two calcium hydroxide paste removal techniques on the apical leakage was not different during a short period.

In this study, Mild slope equation, which has a good ability to calculate the wave transformation is extended to the rapidly varying topography and nonlinear water waves using Hamilton's principle. And these extended equations are solved numerically using the finite-difference method. It is verified, compared to the result of hydraulic experiment. A good agreement between the numerical results and the hydraulic experiments is shown.

Cardiac tumors, especially the primary tumors involving any part of the heart are extremely rare and its relative incidence has been reported to be approximately 0.02%. We report a patient with huge cardiac hemangioma who complained of shortness of breath, general weakness, and dizziness, Imaging study by echocardiography and computed tomography of thorax revealed a huge lobulating mass like a bunch of grapes in the right chamber of heart. The surgical exploration of thorax was performed and a histological diagnosis of spindle cell hemangioma was obtained by microscopy. The patient was treated by surgical resection of the tumor and doing well after surgery. Our experience indicated that prompt diagnosis and treatment of cardiac hemangioma is imperative for patients' prognosis.
진폐증 환자에서 발생한 폐렴에서의 정주용 인 면역글로불린의 투여 효과

목 적 : 진폐중환자에서 대식세포의 기능저하, 폐섬유화로 병소로의 약물 침투의 저조, 면역계의 변화가 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 이로 인하여 폐렴치료의 어려움이 있어 중증 감염증에 효과가 있는 것으로 알려져 있는 IgG를 진폐증 환자에서 동반된 폐렴의 치료로 항생제와 함께 투여하였을 때 효과를 보고자 하였다. 방 법 : 항생제와 IgG를 함께 투여하는 투여군과 항생제만 단독 투여하는 대조군을 무작위로 선정하였다. 약물 투여전과 투여후 2·4·6·8일에 객담검사, 체온, 동맥혈산소분압, 말초혈액 백혈구와 간상중성구를 검사하여 1점부터 4점까지 점수를 부여하여 두 군간에 비교하였다. 결 과 : 투여군은 27명있었고, 대조군은 18명이었다. 두 군간에 나이, 진폐병형, 심폐기능장해도, 객담에서의 균배양여부가 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 1. 이들 인자들을 고려하지 않았을 때, 투여군에서 대조군보다 임상평가 점수가 낮아지는 경향을 보였다. (p=0.083). 2. 나이가 60세 미만인 경우에는 투여군이 대조군보다 임상평가점수가 유의하게 적었다(p<0.01). 3. 단순진폐증인 대상자인 경우에는 투여군에서 대조군보다 임상평가점수가 낮아지는 경향을 보였다(p=0.077). 4. 심폐기능장해도에 따라 두 군간에 임상평가점수의 유의한 차이는 없었다. 5. 객담배양검사의 결과에 따라 두 군간에 임상평가점수의 유의한 차이는 없었다. 결 론 : 나이가 60세 미만으로 상대적으로 젊고, 단순진폐증인 경우에는 진폐증환자에서 병발한 폐렴의 치료에 항생제와 병용한 IgG의 효과가 있을 것으로 예상된다. Objectives : It is well known that pneumoconiotic patients experience impairments of macrophage function, as well as poor penetration of drugs into the fibrotic nodules and the immune system. Resultantly, pneumonia is frequently involved in pneumoconiotic patients and its treatment is not easy. Therefore, we conducted a clinical evaluation of immunoglobulin G which is known to be effective in severe infectious diseases. Methods : We randomly selected 45 pneumoconiotic patients with pneumonia and classified them into 2 groups. The experimental group (IgG group) was scheduled to receive antibiotics and igG (5 g I.V./day for 7 days). The control group was treated with antibiotics alone. Sputum gram stain (counts of WBCs and microorganisms), body temperature, arterial oxygen tension, and counts of peripheral venous blood leukocytes and band neutrophils were used as markers to assess the response effect therapy at time periods of 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 days after completion of therapy. We compared the clinical scores between the two groups. Results : The experimental IgG treated group was composed of 27 patients, and the control group comprised 18 patients. There was no statistical differences between two groups in terms of age, pneumoconiotic profusion, impairment degree of pulmonary function, or frequency of pathogen isolation in the sputum before medication. The experimental IgG treated group showed lower clinical scores as compared with the control group (p=0.083). Conclusions : These results suggest that IgG infusion with antibiotics will have an effect on pneumonia therapy in pneumoconiosis patients that are under 60 years and exhibit simple pneumonoconiois.
