Involvement of reactive oxygen species in cocaine-taking behaviors in rats.

<P>Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in the development of behavioral sensitization following repeated cocaine exposure. We hypothesized that increased ROS following cocaine exposure would act as signaling molecules in the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system, which might play an important role in mediating the reinforcing effects of cocaine. The aim of this study was to evaluate cocaine enhancement of brain metabolic activity and the effects of ROS scavengers on cocaine self-administration behavior, cocaine-induced ROS production in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and cocaine enhancement of DA release in the NAc. Metabolic neural activity monitored by temperature and oxidative stress were increased in NAc following cocaine exposure. Systemic administration of the ROS scavenger N-tert-butyl-α-phenylnitrone (PBN) or 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPOL), either pre- or post-treatment, significantly decreased cocaine self-administration without affecting food intake. Infusion of TEMPOL into the NAc inhibited cocaine self-administration. Increased oxidative stress was found mainly on neurons, but not astrocytes, microglia or oligodendrocytes, in NAc of rats self-administering cocaine. TEMPOL significantly attenuated cocaine-induced enhancement of DA release in the NAc, compared to saline controls. TEMPOL had no effect on the enhancement of DA release produced by the DA transporter inhibitor GBR12909. Taken together, these findings suggest that enhancement of ROS production in NAc neurons contributes to the reinforcing effect of cocaine.</P>

Reference The incidence of cleft lip and palate is quite high, complete unilateral cleft lip and palate accounting for about 30% of these births. Perhaps because of this high incidence, the craniofacial impact of cleft lip and palate has been studied extensively. One of the clinical features of cleft lip and palate is residual alveolar defect. Bone grafting has become a common procedure in the treatment of cleft lip and palate patients. According to its time of occurrence, the bone graft may be considered as primary, secondary, or tertiary bone graft. Some authors state that primary bone graft during early childhood can cause impairment of maxillary growth. Because of its controversal and counter-productive aspects, secondary bone grafting for cleft palate patients atfer the secondary dentition has erupted is now a widely accepted procedure. In this study, we discuss the effect of timing on alveolar cleft bone grafts, sequencing of arch expansion, grafting materials, and report cases that included bone grafting before and after canine eruption.

<P>Titanium dioxide (TiO<SUB>2</SUB>) films are produced by inductively coupled plasma-assisted (ICP) CVD at various H<SUB>2</SUB> flow rates. Anatase and rutile TiO<SUB>2</SUB> films are obtained without any external heating. The surface morphologies, structures, and deposition rates of the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> films are strongly affected by the H<SUB>2</SUB> flow rate. By plasma diagnostics, using a single Langmuir probe (SLP) and optical emission spectroscopy (OES), it is found that the amount of H<SUB>2</SUB> plays a dominant role in determining the deposition rate of the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> films, while the substrate temperature or plasma density do not appreciably affect the deposition rate.</P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>The influence of hydrogen flow rate on TiO<SUB>2</SUB> thin films deposited using inductively coupled plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD) was discussed. Anatase and rutile TiO<SUB>2</SUB> films were obtained without any external heating. Plasma diagnostics (OES, SLP) were performed, and several properties of the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> films were characterized.</P>
Identification of Quantitative Trait Loci for Fatty Acid Content in Brown Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

The rice bran oil contained in brown rice is composed of highly valued ingredient. Improving the content of unsaturated fatty acids in rice seed, such as oleic acid, linoleic acid, and α-linolenic acid, would provide more benefit to human health. Fatty acid content is quantitative trait controlled by multiple genes. We have utilized high-density SNP data from highly advanced breeding populations to identify QTLs for fatty acid contents in brown rice. Here, we identified 51 major QTLs (M-QTLs) and 25 epistatic QTLs (EpQTLs) related to eleven fatty acid contents. Eight and four M-QTLs were pleiotropically associated with the content of different fatty acids in MT-RILs and DT-RILs, respectively. Total effect of M-QTLs for palmitic acid (16:0), oleic acid (18:1), and linoleic acid (18:2), could explain phenotypic variations of 36.7%, 63.7%, and 41% in MT-RILs, respectively. Alpha-linolenic acid which is important for a human’s health could be explained phenotypic variation of 15.7% by six M-QTLs. These QTLs identified in this study can be used to improve nutritious content in rice breeding programs.
First Imported Case of Zika Virus Infection into Korea

<P>Since Zika virus has been spreading rapidly in the Americas from 2015, the outbreak of Zika virus infection becomes a global health emergency because it can cause neurological complications and adverse fetal outcome including microcephaly. Here, we report clinical manifestations and virus isolation findings from a case of Zika virus infection imported from Brazil. The patient, 43-year-old Korean man, developed fever, myalgia, eyeball pain, and maculopapular rash, but not neurological manifestations. Zika virus was isolated from his semen, and reverse-transcriptase PCR was positive for the virus in the blood, urine, and saliva on the 7th day of the illness but was negative on the 21st day. He recovered spontaneously without any neurological complications. He is the first case of Zika virus infection in Korea imported from Brazil.</P>
