      • Social Networking Sites among Edtech Students of Philippine Normal University Visayas

        Janette Canizares-Magalona,Young-hwan Kim APEC국제교육협력원 2019 Asia-Pacific Cybereducation Journal Vol.15 No.2

The study aims to assess the use of social networking sites among Educational Technology (Edtech) students of Philippine Normal University Visayas. Descriptive method was used. A total of 95 respondents participated, 27 were males and 68 were females. The statistics used were: frequency, percentage weighted mean, and rank. The top three uses of social networking in the personal life of the respondents according to rank are: 1) to connect with people, 2) to do research, and 3) to e-mail people. With regard to its use in their academic life, the top three are: 1) to do research, 2) to e-mail, and 3) to connect with people. The social networking sites which ranked number one as being used by the respondents are Google for research, Yahoo for e-mail, Facebook for connecting with people and OLX for purchasing. The study disclosed that the respondents “agree” with the benefits of social networking. It was concluded based on the findings of the study that there are social networking sites used to a high extent by the respondents. However, they are limited only to Facebook, Google and Yahoo. The foremost use of social networking is for researching, chatting and messaging and uploading and downloading. Furthermore, it was concluded that the respondents are aware that social networking has both benefits and risks. The researcher recommends the following: the students should be given trainings and workshops on the effective use of social networking; the teachers should monitor the social networking done by their students for purposes of proper guidance and information.

Designing and Implementing a Resource-Based Learning Environment

Janette Hill 중앙대학교 한국인적자원개발전략연구소 2009 역량개발학습연구 Vol.4 No.1

Resource based learning involves the use or reuse of multiple resources to support learning. Unfortunately when the idea was proposed in the 1970s, we did not have ready access to digital resources nor did we have the ability to reuse these resources easily. Many factors now make the creation of resource-based learning environments (RBLEs) feasible and desirable, yet they still have not fulfilled their promise for learning. With the continued growth and increasing reliance on the Web, organizations have sought ways to increase access to information. One way in which some organizations have attempted to reach out to employees to give access to multiple resources is through the creation of a knowledge management system (KMS). The promise of KMSs have been widely lauded, yet, despite these promises, KMSs, like RBLEs, have faced challenges in implementation and sustainability. Indeed, many of the visions related to the promise of what could be for RBLEs and KMSs remain unfulfilled to date. The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework for thinking about the design and development of a KMS based on the principles of an RBLE.

The Effect of Age on T-Regulatory Cell Number and Function in Patients With Asthma

        Birmingham Janette M.,Chesnova Bogdana,Wisnivesky Juan P.,Calatroni Agustin,Federman Jessie,Bunyavanich Supinda,Busse Paula J. 대한천식알레르기학회 2021 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.13 No.4

T-regulatory cells (Tregs) play a key role in suppressing effector cells and maintaining self-tolerance. Studies of younger adults and children suggest that insufficient differentiation and functional defects of Tregs may contribute to the development of asthma; however, data from older patients with asthma are limited. To address the effects of aging on the relationship of Treg frequency and function with clinical outcomes, we collected induced sputum (differential cell count and Treg frequency) and peripheral blood (Treg function and frequency) from aged (> 60 years of age) and younger (20–40 years old) patients with asthma. In younger patients, low Treg suppression was associated with significantly higher mean numbers of emergency department (ED) (1.8 vs. 0.17, P = 0.02) and urgent care visits (2.3 vs. 0.17, P = 0.01) for asthma, and decreased asthma control (mean Asthma Control Test [ACT] score, 17 vs. 21.3, P = 0.01) compared to those with high Treg suppression. In older patients, however, a lower Treg function was not significantly associated with ACT scores (18.2 vs. 13.4, P = 0.10), or the number of ED (P = 0.9) or urgent care visits (P = 0.2). Our data suggest that Tregs have a weak relationship with asthma control and clinical asthma outcomes in older patients and differ from findings in younger patients, where Tregs are more likely to play a protective role.

      • 해외 칼럼 - 원자력의 디지털화

        Marx, Janette,Peet, Hannah 한국원자력산업회의 2018 원자력산업 Vol.38 No.4

      • Schools as Integrated Service Hubs for Young Children and Families : Policy Implications of the Toronto First Duty Project

Carl Corter,Janette Pelletier 육아정책연구소 2010 International Journal of Child Care and Education Vol.4 No.2

In many parts of the world early childhood services are disconnected in ways that reduce their effectiveness in supporting family life, healthy child development, and the transition to school. Furthermore, access to these services is often limited, particularly for marginalized families. There is increasing policy interest around the world in building early childhood service systems that are universal and integrated, as a way of strengthening the effectiveness and equity of early childhood services. Although there is a growing push to unify child care and education in a universal system, both in Canada and elsewhere, a fully integrated system would bring together additional services for family support, health and community programs. The Toronto First Duty demonstration project was designed to test the feasibility and effects of a universal model for integrating child care, kindergarten, family support and other services in school-based community hubs. The intent of the project partners- a charitable foundation, municipal government, and school board- was to mobilize knowledge to improve early childhood programs and policy at both the local and provincial levels. A university-based research team has worked over the last decade to evaluate the implementation process and outcomes of the project, and has contributed to the knowledge mobilization for practice and policy change. The research found positive evidence on the feasibility of implementing the model, as well as evidence about the processes that work through program and family pathways to enhance child development and parenting. Findings from the project have helped to move provincial policy in Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. Although fixed models may not apply to new contexts, some of the evidence-informed design principles from this project converge with findings from other jurisdictions and have broad implications for policies promoting universal, integrated service systems for early childhood.

A Higher Manometric Esophageal Length to Height Ratio in Achalasia Explains the Lower Prevalence of Hiatal Hernia

        Enrique Coss-Adame,Janette Furuzawa-Carballeda,Andric C Perez-Ortiz,Ana López-Ruiz,Miguel A Valdovinos,Josué Sánchez-Gómez,José Peralta-Figueroa,Héctor Olvera-Prado,Fidel López-Verdugo,Sofía Narváez-C 대한소화기 기능성질환∙운동학회 2023 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.29 No.4

Background/AimsThe evidence suggests that a shorter esophageal length (EL) in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients is associated with the presence of hiatal hernia (HH). However, there are no reports of this association in patients with achalasia. The aim is to (1) determine the prevalence of hiatal hernia in achalasia patients, (2) compare achalasia EL with GERD patients and healthy volunteers (HV), (3) measure achalasia manometric esophageal length to height (MELH) ratio, and (4) determine if there are differences in symptoms between patients with and without hiatal hernia. MethodsThis retrospective and cross-sectional study consist of 87 pre-surgical achalasia patients, 22 GERD patients, and 30 HV. High-resolution manometry (HRM), barium swallow, and upper endoscopy were performed to diagnose HH. The EL and MELH ratio were measured by HRM. Symptoms were assessed with Eckardt, Eating Assessment Tool, and GERD–health-related quality of life questionnaires. ResultsThe HH in GERD’s prevalence was 73% vs 3% in achalasia patients (P < 0.001). Achalasia patients had a longer esophagus and a higher MELH ratio than HV and GERD patients (P < 0.001). GERD patients had a lower MELH ratio than HV (P < 0.05). EAT-10 (P < 0.0001) and Eckardt (P < 0.05) scores were higher in achalasia without HH vs HH. ConclusionsThe prevalence of HH in achalasia is significantly lower than in GERD. The longer EL and the higher MELH ratio in achalasia could explain the lower prevalence of HH. Despite the low prevalence of HH in achalasia patients, the surgeon should be encouraged not to rule out HH since the risk of postoperative reflux may increase if this condition is not identified and corrected.

      • Understanding oligonucleotide-templated nanocrystals: growth mechanisms and surface properties.

        Cha, Tae-Gon,Baker, Benjamin A,Salgado, Janette,Bates, Christopher J,Chen, Kok Hao,Chang, Alice C,Akatay, M Cem,Han, Jae-Hee,Strano, Michael S,Choi, Jong Hyun American Chemical Society 2012 ACS NANO Vol.6 No.9

<P>We describe studies of nanoparticle synthesis using oligonucleotides as capping ligands. The oligonucleotides nucleate, grow, and stabilize near-infrared fluorescent, approximately uniform PbS nanocrystals in an aqueous environment. The properties of the resulting particles strongly depend upon the sequences as well as synthesis conditions. Fourier Transform infrared measurements suggest that functional groups on the nucleobases such as carbonyl and amine moieties are responsible for surface passivation, while the phosphate backbone is strained to accommodate nucleobase bonding, preventing irreversible aggregation and thereby stabilizing the colloids. Our theoretical model indicates that oligonucleotide-mediated particle growth relies on the chemical reactivity of the oligonucleotide ligands that saturate dangling bonds of growing clusters, and favorable sequences are those that have the highest surface reactivity with growing particles. The oligonucleotide template approach is facile and versatile, offering a route to produce a range of material compositions for other chalcogenide semiconductor quantum dots and metal oxide nanoparticles.</P>

Inhomogeneity of CoCrW powder products manufactured by SLM technology

        Anna Guzanová,Dagmar Draganovská,Gabriela Ižaríková,Janette Brezinová,Viktória Rajťúková,Jozef Živčák,Radovan Hudák,Erik Janoško,Róbert Moro 대한기계학회 2021 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.35 No.10

The article deals with selective laser melting process using CoCrW powder. Our aim was to identify the influence of product position on the building platform and the re-use of powder on roughness, hardness, porosity and corrosion properties of materials, made under uniform process parameters. Roughness was tested with a stylus profilometer, corrosion resistance by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and linear polarization. Porosity was assessed by image analysis on metallographic sections taken in two mutually perpendicular directions. The same metallographic sections were used to measure microhardness. The results confirmed a statistically significant dependence of the surface roughness with the position on the platform as well as with the recycling of the powder used. The corrosion resistance of the materials was excellent. Increased porosity values and lower hardness occurred in the middle of the building platform. The reason for the variation of the properties within the building platform can be seen in the unequal laser input energy in the individual positions of the plate.
