Room temperature ferroelectric effect and enhanced dielectric permittivity in Rochelle salt/PVA percolative composite films

        Jamal Uddin,T.R. Middya,B.K. Chaudhuri 한국물리학회 2013 Current Applied Physics Vol.13 No.3

Rochelle salt (RS) filled polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite films have been prepared via a simple solution casting technique. The transport, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the samples have been studied. The dielectric permittivity decreases slowly with increasing frequency and rise gradually with increasing temperature and RS contents in the composites. As the volume fraction of the RS reaches to percolation threshold (fc w0.0538), an abrupt increase in the dielectric permittivity (w403 almost 80 times higher compared to pure PVA with low loss w0.18 at 1 kHz and room temperature) occurs in the RS/PVA composite film, which is attributed to the formation of the conductive network in the matrix. Ferroelectric loops up to room temperature (300 K) and the slight increase in Curie temperature from 297 to 300 K have also been observed for percolative composite film. The developed composite material with low loss high dielectric permittivity and room temperature ferroelectric behaviors might be applied in the technological fields.

Saka and the Abject: Masculine Dominance, the Mother and Contemporary Malay Horror Films

2014 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.10 No.1

Malay horror films have made a comeback since the government of Malaysia in 2004 gradually relaxed the ban. Since then, Malaysian cinema has been flooded with horror films, and this causes concern among politicians as they argue that horror films can impede the growth of the mind, as the values perpetuated by horror films are seen to go against the government’s effort to promote scientific and critical thinking among Malaysians. We argue that understanding the current view that consigns this film genre to the feminine side of the binary system, hence, the irrational as opposed to the rational or masculine, is one of the reasons for such concern. Employing Julia Kristeva’s concept of abjection in the tradition of feminist psychoanalysis as the theoretical framework, this paper looks at the mother character and her relationship with Saka in a contemporary Malay horror film to reveal the ideological work of such masculine ideology. Saka is a mystical figure that is “invited” into a family and is passed down through the matrilineal line from one generation to the next. We argue that even though Saka is used as an entrapment for female liberatory possibilities, it ironically mirrors the destabilization of masculine dominance. We do this by illustrating how female characters in the genre are typecast and Saka functions as a masculine substitute that reinforces this idea, which ultimately is used to investigate female sexuality; hence, playing the typical role of masculine ideological dominance.

Vol.18 No.3

In this study, we made UV cured acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive containing silicone-urethaneacrylate (SUA) oligomer for a coating on protective film and investigated the effect of SUA oligomer content and UV-dose on adhesion properties. The results illustrated that peel strength decreases with increasing oligomer content and UV-dose, while holding power increases. The gel fractions sharply increased after UV irradiation and then remain constant with prolonged UV exposure. From peel-off test, sample S70 (70% oligomer content) shows the best peelability and removability without remaining any mark or adhesive material on the test substrate than S50 (50% oligomer content) and S60 (60% oligomer content). Sample S70 also showed a surface energy lower than 26mJ/㎡ and a transmittance higher than 95% at UV-dose 1857 and 2270 mJ/㎠ which met the required properties for protective film application.

Quantum Deep Unfolding Based Resource Allocation Optimization for Future Wireless Networks

Vol.48 No.8

This paper introduces Quantum Deep Unfolding (QDU), a technique for optimizing power allocation and transmit precoding in multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) systems. Solving the optimization problem in such systems poses a significant challenge due to its high computational complexity and non-convex nature, which increases the risk of being stuck at a local minimum. In order to address this issue, QDU leverages an iterative algorithm and analytical derivation to enhance the sum rate performance and training processes by optimizing power allocation and transmit precoding. The proposed approach integrates a Quantum Neural Network (QNN) induced by an iterative deep unfolding algorithm with a learning solution inspired by the training process. At each QDU layer, the iterative optimization involving the Projected Gradient Descent (PGD) operator is unfolded to learn the crucial parameters. The objective of QDU is to maximize the achievable sum rate while simultaneously reducing computational complexity.

Investigating the Missing "I" in Zubaidah... My Story : A Dialogic Consideration

2011 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.17 No.4

This paper starts with the question: What drives/motivates someone to write about his or her own life? This question is ubiquitous and has been one of the major concerns in the study of autobiographical writings. It has been argued that such writings, though personal, are seen as a way of liberating women from the shackle of male oppression. Autobiography allows women to have a voice, and to have it heard too. In effect, women find agency in their writing, allowing them to be and feel like subjects. The development of critical theory such as postmodernism further complicates the relationship between writing and female subjectivity as it foregrounds the irrevocable fragmentation of the subject. Employing Lynne Pearce’s feminist reading of Bakthin’s dialogics as theoretical framework, this paper suggests an alternative reading to Zubaidah... My Story, arguing that what critics of autobiography can do is to re-engage with and then re-evaluate the poetics of perception, foregrounding the urgency of reconstructing female reality. Hinging on my role as a reader, I argue that one way to re-engage and re-evaluate the constituents of the writer’s subjectivity is to dialogically approach the text as it is within this reconstruction that her story is elevated from mere historical account to culturally relevant communication of the female self.
