A Lossless Embedded Compression Using Significant Bit Truncation for HD Video Coding

<P>Increasing the image size of a video sequence aggravates the memory bandwidth problem of a video coding system. Despite many embedded compression (EC) algorithms proposed to overcome this problem, no lossless EC algorithm able to handle high-definition (HD) size video sequences has been proposed thus far. In this paper, a lossless EC algorithm for HD video sequences and related hardware architecture is proposed. The proposed algorithm consists of two steps. The first is a hierarchical prediction method based on pixel averaging and copying. The second step involves significant bit truncation (SBT) which encodes prediction errors in a group with the same number of bits so that the multiple prediction errors are decoded in a clock cycle. The theoretical lower bound of the compression ratio of the SBT coding was also derived. Experimental results have shown a 60% reduction of memory bandwidth on average. Hardware implementation results have shown that a throughput of 14.2 pixels/cycle can be achieved with 36 K gates, which is sufficient to handle HD-size video sequences in real time.</P>

Background: Ultrafiltration (UF) would enhance coagulation profiles by concentrating coagulation elements during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) for cardiac surgery. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed electronic medical records of 75 patients who had undergone cardiac surgery with rotational thromboelastometry-based coagulation management in a university hospital and analyzed the UF-induced changes in the maximum clot firmness (MCF) of extrinsically activated test with tissue factor (EXTEM) during CPB in 30 patients. Results: The median volume of filtered-free water was 1,350 ml, and median hematocrit was significantly increased from 22.5% to 25.5%. As the primary measure, UF significantly increased the median MCF-EXTEM from 48.0 mm to 50.5 mm (P = 0.015, effect size r = 0.44). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve pre-UF MCF-EXTEM for discrimination of any increase of MCF-EXTEM after applying UF was 0.89 (95% CI [0.77, 1.00], P < 0.001), and its cut-off value was 50.5 mm (specificity of 81.8% and sensitivity of 84.2% in Youden’s J statistic). In the secondary analyses using the cut-off value, UF significantly increased the median MCF-EXTEM from 40.5 mm to 42.5 mm in 18 patients with pre-UF MCF-EXTEM ≤ 50.5 mm. However, it did not increase MCF-EXTEM in 12 patients with pre-UF MCF-EXTEM > 50.5 mm. There was a significant interaction between pre-UF MCF-EXTEM values and applying UF (P < 0.001 for the subgroup, P = 0.046 for UF, P = 0.003 for interaction).Conclusions: Applying UF improved clot firmness, and the improvement was more pronounced when pre-UF MCF-EXTEM had been reduced during CPB.
Overmodulation Strategy of NPC Type 3-Level Inverter for Traction Drives

This paper proposes an overmodulation method for improving the voltage utilization of NPC type 3-level inverter for traction drives. The conventional railway vehicle has used a vector control to MI=0.907 and a slip-frequency control from MI=0.907 to the six-step mode. The slip-frequency control has less output torque dynamics than the vector control. In this paper, the linear region of NPC type 3-level inverter output voltage is extended to the six-step mode by using overmodulation strategy. As a result, vector control can be adapted in the whole regions and it leads to better output torque dynamics comparing with the conventional slip frequency control in overmodulation region. The overmodulation range is divided into two modes depending on the modulation index (MI), In the overmodulation region Ⅰ, the reference angles are derived from the Fourier series expansion of the reference voltage corresponds to the MI. In the overmodulation region Ⅱ, the holding angles are also derived in the same way. Therefore, it is possible to obtain the linear control and the maximized utilization of PWM inverter output voltage.

This paper describes a system for human-robot interaction which is one of the biggest issues recently. We approach the interaction using sound source localization, mapping data and voice recognition. The aim of the system for human-robot interaction is that the robot finds a person speaking in an area and goes to the speaker while the robot avoids obstacles using mapping data obtained before. In addition, the system can get an order such as going to a place through a simple conversation with a person.
A Review on Object Manipulation Techniques in Virtual Environments and their Performance Metrics

Objective: The aim of this paper is to classify and characterize the existing interaction methods regarding object manipulation in virtual reality environment. Background: Over the past few decades, the field of virtual reality has gone through rapid advances and various virtual object manipulation techniques have been developed. However, an established classification of the existing object manipulation techniques does not seem available at this point. A systematic review of the advances during the past three decades and a classification of the existing object manipulation techniques based on it would help researchers prospect the future of human-machine interaction in virtual environments and further formulate future research directions for virtual object manipulation. Method: We collected and examined studies that are related to virtual reality and virtual object manipulation. The collected studies were reviewed in chronological order, and virtual object manipulation techniques were identified. Then, the existing virtual object manipulation techniques were sorted into categories according to similarities and each category was characterized. Additionally, this study reviewed the existing performance metrics for evaluating virtual object manipulation techniques. Application: This paper will aid in ameliorating the understanding of the existing virtual object manipulation techniques, and furthermore, offer directions to the future researchers in this field.

Ferroelectric Bi3:25La0:75Ti3O12 (BLT) thin lms were prepared on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates by the pulsed-laser deposition method. ITO electrodes have previously been used as bottom electrodes for studies in optical phenomenon, or in oating gate capacitors. From this fact, the ITO layer was used as the bottom electrode and gold dots with an area of 1:77 10..4 cm2 was deposited for use as the top electrode in the thin lm capacitor. The BLT lms were deposited at 400 C for 5 minutes and annealed at 650 C for 1 hour. The remnant polarization (Pr) and coercive eld (Ec) values at an applied voltage of 5 V were measured to be in the range of 14-16 C/cm2 and 90-100 kV/cm, respectively. Measurements of the fatigue test was carried out until 1 1011 cycles at an applied frequency of 500 kHz. Polarization decrease for lms on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) was not observed but for the ITO coated glass substrates, however, a slight decrease was observed at about 1109 cycles. The P-E hysteresis loops before and after the fatigue test showed a slight degradation of remnant polarization.
