This paper reviews Korea-US relations concerning the suspension of trade with Japan by Rhee’s Government in 1959. In 1959, Korea-Japan relations were the worst since the beginning of negotiationsto establishnational friendship in 1951. The reason was the Japanese Government’s permission for the repatriation of Koreans in Japan to North Korea. Rhee’s Government suspended trade with Japan to stop the repatriation process. Although this was a problem between Korea and Japan, the USA played an important role in the matter. A large part of trade with Japan was through the USA aid fund of the International Cooperation Administration(ICA). Korea requested a waiver of ICA Regulation1 which stipulated the“procure’ rule” as the lowest price possible in order to stop imports from Japan. The USA rejected this request as an inappropriate use of aid funds and because they thought that any decision by them on the matter would be regarded as favoring one country over the other. Relations between Korea-USA-Japan were complexly entwined through the structure of ICA aid. The trade conict between Korea and Japan in 1959 was not the problem of two nations but of three; theUSA maintained ‘neutrality’. Unfortunately, Korea interpreted this neutrality as support for Japan or their ‘acquiescence’ for the repatriation of Koreans from Japan. is was the ‘parallax’ of Korea-USA relations caused by ICA aid and it provides a ‘vision’ for understanding Korea-USA-Japan relations.

This article examines the emergence of Korea-Japan(K-J) economic cooperation(EC) negotiations prior to the normalization of diplomatic relations(NDR), the K government’s policy on this issue, and the two governments’ discussions after the agreement of Kim and Ohira. As K-J EC became a hot topic, there was a growing concern in the Korean society. The K government has claimed that EC should be promoted after the NDR. However, because of the huge amount of money needed to carry out the economic development plan, it began to examine the possibility of EC early onwards. Since 1963, EC was discussed at the level of both governments. Initially, transactions of capital goods on a deferred payment basis were discussed, and emergency aid was discussed after mid-1964. The process was distinct from the one-on-one talks, but in reality, the two sides seemed to be interconnected and sluggish. However, the real economic relations have been made through this process in a situation where the execution of PC is delayed. In short, the process of discussing EC during this period was the starting point of the K-J economic relationship, which began in earnest after the NDR.

This paper examined the Korea-Japan negotiations on the issue of Japanese Ashes in Seoul(Korea), domestic public opinion, and its historical meanings. Previous studies have focused on the fact that this issue is closely related to the issue of Korean remains(ashes) in Korea-Japan relations. While accepting these achievements, this paper tried to move on to a more advanced discussion at the following two points. First, by actively utilizing government documents, this paper tried to examine the excavation of the remains of Dongguk University and Hongje-dong, and the process of negotiations with Japan more delicately. Second, Paying attention to this issue, especially the accident on damage to the memorial tower in the charnel house, this paper tried to reveal what kind of reaction it caused and what it meant. e issue of Japanese Ashes at this time was a measure of Korean society’s feelings toward Japan. It was also a barometer to examine how “normalized” relations between Korea and Japan.

<P>Edible coating solutions, containing antioxidant and antimicrobial agents, were developed from mixture of apple peel powder and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC). Microfluidization, a high pressure homogenization technique, was used to reduce the particle size for the development of a highly dispersed apple peel powder solution. Tartaric acid was incorporated into apple peel powder/CMC solution, as an antimicrobial for active coating solution. The developed coating solution was applied to fresh beef patties, which were analyzed for antioxidant effects against lipid oxidation and antimicrobial activity against mesophilic aerobic bacteria, molds and yeasts, and Salmonella enterica. The sensory attributes were evaluated by 40 panelists. Results showed that active coating treatment completely inhibited lipid oxidation, and efficiently suppressed the growth of microbial on raw beef patties. The active coating formulation did not affect the sensory characteristics of raw and cooked beef patties. Therefore, apple peel-based edible coating treatment could be applied to meat products to protect the quality and prevent deterioration. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.</P>

<P><B>Summary</B></P><P><I>Acinetobacter oleivorans </I>DR1 can utilize C12–C30 alkanes as a sole carbon source but not short‐chain alkanes (C6, C10). Two copies of each <I>alkB</I>‐, <I>almA</I>‐ and <I>ladA</I>‐type alkane hydroxylase (AH) are present in the genome of DR1 cells. Expression and mutational analyses of AHs showed that <I>alkB1</I> and <I>alkB2</I> are the major AH‐encoding genes under C12–C30, and the roles of other <I>almA</I>‐ and <I>ladA</I> genes are negligible. Our data suggested that AlkB1 is responsible for long‐chain alkane utilization (C24–C26), and AlkB2 is important for medium‐chain alkane (C12–C16) metabolism. Phylogenetic analyses revealed large incongruities between phylogenies of 16S rRNA and each AH gene, which implies that <I>A. oleivorans </I>DR1 has acquired multiple alkane hydroxylases through horizontal gene transfer. Transcriptomic and qRT‐PCR analyses suggested that genes participating in the synthesis of siderophore, trehalose and poly 3‐hydroxybutyrate (PHB) were expressed at much higher levels when cells used C30 than when used succinate as a carbon source. The following biochemical assays supported our gene expression analyses: (i) quantification of siderophore, (ii) measurement of trehalose and (iii) observation of PHB storage. Interestingly, highly induced both <I>ackA</I> gene encoding an acetate kinase A and <I>pta</I> gene encoding a phosphotransacetylase suggested unusual ATP synthesis during C30 alkane degradation, which was demonstrated by ATP measurement using the <I>ΔackA</I> mutant. Impaired growth of the <I>ΔaceA</I> mutant indicated that the glyoxylate shunt pathway is important when C30 alkane is utilized. Our data provide insight into long‐chain alkane degradation in soil microorganisms.</P>
