Lustre is a scalable, distributed file system, which is popular in the field of high-performance computing. Recently, the advent of SSD has enabled high-performance storage hardware, but software development requires further improvement. In this paper, we analyzed performance of the Lustre system using SSD via extensive experimentation. We compared performance of Lustre on SSDs and HDDs in terms of file read/write throughputs and metadata access latencies. Our experimental results showed that 1) SSDs improve metadata access performance due to fast random read/write access of SSD characteristics, and 2) SSD are benefited to a greater extent under multiple threads and large numbers of small sized files.

In this study, we examine the availability of a cooling patch to enhance the output power of a hybrid energy device (HED) comprising a photovoltaic cell (PVC) and a thermoelectric generator (TEG). The cooling patch attached on the back of the TEG drops the temperature of the PVC via the TEG and makes a large thermal gradient across the TEG under irradiances in a range of 200 to 1000 W/㎡. The cooling patch is more effective for the output power of the HED as the irradiance increases, and it enhances the maximum output power of the HED to 42.1 ㎽ at an irradiance of 1000 W/㎡. The increment in the maximum output power reaches 27% owing to the attachment of the cooling patch that does not consume any power.
Vol.40 No.4
This study examined the effects of cooking temperature and onion (Allium cepa L.) tissue concentrate on heterocyclic amine (HCA) formation in fried ground beef patties. Various amounts of onion tissue (2.0, 5.0, and 10.0%, w/w) were added to the ground beef patties, which were then fried at two different temperatures (190 and 225℃) for 10 min/side. The ground beef patties fried at 190℃ and containing 10.0% (w/w) onion showed a 51% decrease in mutagenicity, and formation of 2-amino-3,8-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f ]quinoxaline (MeIQx) and 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]-pyridine (PhIP) was reduced by 58% and 63%, respectively. For the patties fried at 225℃, total mutagenicity decreased by 35% and 48% with the additions of 5.0 and 10.0% (w/w) onion, respectively, and PhIP formation was reduced 50, 60, and 71% with the additions of 2.0, 5.0, and 10.0% (w/w) onion, respectively.
