• Trends in green governance -Embedding environmental concerns into decision-making in Local government in Australia

Jade Herriman 한국정부학회 2010 한국정부학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.2010 No.12

Local Government has an important role to play in responding to environmental risks and challenges. As well as continuing to deliver a range of environmental policies and programs, across topics such as waste, water transport, biodiversity and natural resource management energy conservation, and community engagement with sustainability issues, local government in Australia has also begun to question how sustainability concerns can become an integral dimension of decision making at the municipal level. This paper describes recent changes across four dimensions of council corporate practice in New South Wales as they relate to sustainability outcomes-long term visioning, considering the ``triple bottom line`` at key decision points, tracking and monitoring, considering the ``triple bottom line`` at key decision points, tracking and monitoring outcomes, and public participation and partnership for change. It highlights challenges to the traditional notion of local government at the centre of policy, and raises questions about extending these practices across the sector for environmental outcomes.

COVID-19 herd immunity in the absence of a vaccine: an irresponsible approach

Jade Khalife1,Derrick VanGennep 한국역학회 2021 Epidemiology and Health Vol.43 No.-

As severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to spread rapidly throughout the human population, the concept of “herd immunity” has attracted the attention of both decision-makers and the general public. In the absence of a vaccine, this entails that a large proportion of the population will be infected to develop immunity that would limit the severity and/or extent of subsequent outbreaks. We argue that adopting such an approach should be avoided for several reasons. There are significant uncertainties about whether achieving herd immunity is possible. If possible, achieving herd immunity would impose a large burden on society. There are gaps in protection, making it difficult to shield the vulnerable. It would defeat the purpose of avoiding harm caused by the virus. Lastly, dozens of countries are showing that containment is possible.

        Generalized Dowling-Degos Disease: Case Reports

Jade Wititsuwannakul,Nopadon Noppakun 대한피부과학회 2013 Annals of Dermatology Vol.25 No.3

Dowling-Degos disease (DDD) is a rare autosomal dominant trait characterized by numerous, symmetrical, progressive and pigmented macules over the axillae, groins, face, neck, arms and trunk as well as scattered comedo-like lesions (dark dot, follicles) and pitted acneiform scars. Histopathology is diagnostic testing using a distinctive form of acanthosis, characterized by an irregular elongation of thin branching rete ridges, with a concentration of melanin at the tips. We report cases of generalized DDD in a single family with autosomal dominant penetrance. DDD can be presented in a generalized form with hypopigmented lesions instead of reticulate hyperpigmentation confined to the flexor areas. This form can be differentiated from DUH by histopathology.

Polymerization of heterophasic propylene copolymer with Me2Si(2-Me-4-PhInd)2ZrCl2 supported on SiO2 and SiO2-MgCl2 carriers

Jade Dhalle Encarnacion,박상준,고영수 한국화학공학회 2020 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.37 No.2

Me2Si(2-Me-4-phInd)2ZrCl2 supported on SiO2/MgCl2 binary support was prepared for the preparation of heterophasic copolymer of polypropylene. The bi-support underwent surface treatment with various alkyl aluminum compounds such as trimethylaluminum (TMA), triethylaluminum (TEAL), and triisobutylaluminum (TIBA) before supporting the metallocene catalyst for 3 or 24 hours and were used for homopolymerization. It was notable that the generated SiO2/MgCl2 bi-support had lower surface area, pore volume and size as compared to the conventional SiO2. Impact polypropylene copolymers (IPCs) were obtained using two-step polymerization in one reactor with the presence of metallocene catalyst supported on SiO2. Propylene was polymerized in the reactor to produce the iPP matrix followed by polymerization of ethylene resulting to heterophasic material. It is apparent that the molecular weight of the polymer increased with longer PE polymerization time and as the polymerization time was more than 40 min, PP peak appeared near 147.9-149.2 oC, and a new peak emerged at 116.9-119.9 oC which could be attributed to the melting temperature of iPP crystallites and a less intense peak to either chains of ethylene-propylene copolymers. SEM images also confirmed that spherical PE particles were deeply embedded in the crystalline PP matrix and a large amount was produced as the polymerization time of the second stage ethylene polymerization was increased.

Rosacea and Use of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Mask for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Report of Five Cases

        ( Jade G. M. Logger ),( Malou Peppelman ),( Roel Van Vugt ),( Rieke J. B. Driessen ) 대한피부과학회 2020 Annals of Dermatology Vol.32 No.3

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of unknown etiology. We noticed a series of patients who were diagnosed with rosacea as well as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), for which they used a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) mask. This case series aims to give insight in the possible relationship between rosacea and the use of a CPAP mask for OSAS. We present five patients with OSAS who developed or worsened rosacea symptoms after use of a CPAP mask covering nose and mouth. Two patients showed centrofacial symptoms consistent with the shape of the CPAP mask; three patients had nasal cutaneous symptoms. It is postulated that the occlusive effect of the CPAP mask, increasing skin humidity and temperature, can induce primary symptoms in patients with an underlying sensibility for rosacea. This could have implications for choice of CPAP mask type and topical therapeutic options for rosacea. (Ann Dermatol 32(3) 247∼250, 2020)

      • Does Acupuncture Protect Dopamine Neurons in Parkinson's Disease Rodent Model?: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

        Ko, Jade Heejae,Lee, Hyangsook,Kim, Seung-Nam,Park, Hi-Joon Frontiers Media S.A. 2019 FRONTIERS IN AGING NEUROSCIENCE Vol.11 No.-

Background: Acupuncture has been reported to have significant effects, not only in alleviating impaired motor function, but also rescuing dopaminergic neuron deficits in rodent models of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, a systemic analysis of these beneficial effects has yet to be performed.

Objective: To evaluate the neuroprotective effect of acupuncture in animal models of PD.

Methods: A literature search of the PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Research Information Service System, and Japan Society of Acupuncture and Moxibustion databases was performed to retrieve studies that investigated the effects of acupuncture on PD. The quality of each included study was evaluated using the 10-item checklist modified from the Collaborative Approach to Meta-Analysis and Review of Animal Data from Experimental Studies. RevMan version 5.3 (Foundation for Statistical Computing, Vienna, Austria) was used for meta-analysis.

Results: The 42 studies included scored between 2 and 7 points, with a mean score of 4.6. Outcome measures included tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) level and dopamine content. Meta-analysis results revealed statistically significant effects of acupuncture for increasing both TH levels (33.97 [95% CI 33.15–34.79]; p < 0.00001) and dopamine content (4.23 [95% CI 3.53–4.92]; p < 0.00001) compared with that observed in PD control groups. In addition, motor dysfunctions exhibited by model PD animals were also mitigated by acupuncture treatment.

Conclusions: Although there were limitations in the number and quality of the included studies, results of this analysis suggest that acupuncture exerts a protective effect on dopaminergic neurons in rodent models of PD.
