        Magnetic properties of one-dimensional embedded nickel nanostructures in gold nanowires

        Magnetic nanostructures of nickel embedded in gold were successfully fabricated by electrochemical deposition in porous alumina templates. Structural characterization of the samples confirmed the formation of pure phase, crystalline multi-segmented Au-Ni-Au nanowires. Magnetic characterization of the wires reveals that ferromagnetism arises as a result of Ni embedded in Au segments. An interesting behavior of coercivity was observed that showed a rapid decrease of coercivity for smaller Ni segments while a monotonic decrease was found for the larger segments. Finally, the saturation magnetization of the wires exhibited a slower increase for smaller Ni segments while a sharp increase was observed for larger Ni segments.

        Coumarins from Angelica decursiva inhibit lipopolysaccharideinduced nitrite oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells

        Angelica decursiva has long been used in Korean traditional medicine as an antitussive, analgesic, antipyretic, and cough remedy. In this study, the anti-inflammatory activity of 9 coumarin derivatives isolated from a 90 % methanol fraction was evaluated via inhibition of production of nitric oxide (NO) and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a), as well as the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX- 2) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Among the tested compounds, edulisin II (1) exhibited the most potent NO production inhibitory activity, followed by decursidin (2), Pd–C-III (3), 4-hydroxy Pd–CIII (4), Pd–C-I (5), and Pd–C-II (6). In contrast, (?)-transdecursidinol (7) did not exhibit NO suppressive effects on LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Structure-activity relationships revealed that esterification of the hydroxyl at C-30 or C-40 of 7 with an angeloyl/senecioyl/acetyl group is essential for its inhibitory activity against NO production, while the number of angeloyl or senecioyl groups, and their positions greatly affect the potency of these coumarins. Coumarins 1-6 also inhibited TNF-a production and iNOS protein expression, while compounds 1-4 inhibited COX-2 protein expression in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. These results suggest that coumarins isolated from A. decursiva might be used as potential leads for the development of therapeutic agents for inflammation-associated disorders.

      • Huntington’s disease: Neural dysfunction linked to inositol polyphosphate multikinase

        <P><B>Significance</B></P><P>Huntington’s disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting the striatum. The striatal-enriched transcription factor COUP-TF-interacting protein 2 (Ctip2) is depleted in HD and has been identified as a putative transcription factor for the enzyme inositol polyphosphate multikinase (IPMK). IPMK displays soluble inositol phosphate kinase activity, lipid kinase activity, and several noncatalytic activities including its role as a transcriptional coactivator. We describe severe depletion in IPMK protein in HD patients and several animal and cell models of the disease. IPMK overexpression rescues the metabolic impairments in a cell model of HD. Furthermore, delivery of IPMK in a transgenic HD model improves pathological changes and motor performance. The Ctip2–IPMK–Akt signaling pathway provides a previously unidentified therapeutic target for HD.</P><P>Huntington’s disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease caused by a glutamine repeat expansion in mutant huntingtin (mHtt). Despite the known genetic cause of HD, the pathophysiology of this disease remains to be elucidated. Inositol polyphosphate multikinase (IPMK) is an enzyme that displays soluble inositol phosphate kinase activity, lipid kinase activity, and various noncatalytic interactions. We report a severe loss of IPMK in the striatum of HD patients and in several cellular and animal models of the disease. This depletion reflects mHtt-induced impairment of COUP-TF-interacting protein 2 (Ctip2), a striatal-enriched transcription factor for IPMK, as well as alterations in IPMK protein stability. IPMK overexpression reverses the metabolic activity deficit in a cell model of HD. IPMK depletion appears to mediate neural dysfunction, because intrastriatal delivery of IPMK abates the progression of motor abnormalities and rescues striatal pathology in transgenic murine models of HD.</P>

        Preparation, characterization and study of nanofiltration composite membrane: Electrochemical and optical properties

        The polystyrene based molybdate composite membranes were prepared by the sol–gel method by applying different pressures. XRD data shows that formation of nanocomposite and exhibit no other impurity phase. The membrane potential is found to be effected by both pressure and ion concentration. The effective charge density of these membranes was determined by TMS method and reveal dependence of membrane potential on physicochemical properties. The change in membrane capacitance and resistance values with the change in electrolyte concentration and applied frequency had been interpreted in terms of the charges produced in the electrical double layer at the membrane solution interface.

      • Comparison of treatment options in meniere's disease

        Meniere's disease (MD) is a disease that affects the inner ear. It is formed as a result of endolymphatic hydrops. Hearing loss and vertigo are important in the diagnosis of MD. There is fluctuating and progressive hearing loss. Vertigo attacks cause severe dizziness in the patient. There are many treatment options in MD. These are hearing aid, diet, medication and surgery. In this study, we will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the different treatment options. Treatment options have been compared to find out what the appropriate treatment is. Another concern is the importance of surgery in MD. This study is combination of qualitative and quantitative studies. Much focus will be on vertigo, and appropriate treatment options of MD will be mentioned also the importance of surgery. The main question in this study is the necessity of surgery. Surgical procedures are the most doubtful treatment option because of their indications and contraindications. In this study, it has been noticed that surgical operation should be delayed as much as possible. Priority is to try other treatment options. Surgery can be considered as a last resort. When we look at the operations performed, operations are mostly done in advanced Meniere cases.

        Thıamıne Defıcıency and Wernıcke-Korsakoff Syndrome Effects on Vestıbular System

        Wernicke korsakoff syndrome is caused by thiamine deficiency in the body. Thiamine not available in the body, is a substance to be taken from outside with foods. There are some conditions that reduce the metabolism of thiamine taken from the body and cause a vital risk. The most important factor is alcoholism. Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome produces both neurological and vestibular symptoms. At the same time, the damage of these symptoms to the patient psychology cannot be ignored. The aim of this study is to investigate the damage and mechanism of the syndrome in the vestibular system. In this study, we investigated vestibular symptoms of Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome due to thiamine deficiency, differences of vestibular system according to individuals and mechanism of damage caused by syndrome in vestibular system. Thiamine deficiency is caused by Wernicke Karsokoff syndrome with some external factors. This syndrome shows the most important effects of alcoholism. It causes neurological, vestibular and psychological symptoms. In this context, we can say that thiamine deficiency is a disease that causes damage in the vestibular system due to nystagmus formation and imbalance. The most important detail in the treatment stage is the detailed evaluation of symptoms associated with each other.

        The Impact of Voluntary Disclosure on Firm’s Value

        Financial reporting includes disclosures as prescribed by regulators, but few companies go beyond mandatory requirements and provide additional information voluntarily. This study evaluates the potential impact of voluntary information disclosure on the value of firms listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange for the period 2017–2019. The study applies GLS and system-GMM (Two-stage) estimation for detecting the magnitude of voluntary disclosure information on the firms’ value. Study findings reveal a positive and significant relationship between voluntary disclosure relating to financial statistics, social responsibility information, corporate governance, and the firms’ value as measured by Tobin’s Q. However, there is a negative and significant relationship between company information, accounting policies, and the firms’ value as measured by Tobin’s Q. Study findings suggest that the impact of voluntary disclosure on the value of the firms varies with the appropriate selection of proxy measures. Nonetheless, it is believed that voluntary disclosure plays a major role in projecting a clean image in the market and in attracting potential investors with a positive note about the company’s prospects.
