      • Molecular Characterization of FLT3 Mutations in Acute Leukemia Patients

        Ishfaq, Mariam,Malik, Arif,Faiz, Mariam,Sheikh, Ishfaq Ahmad,Asif, Muhammad,Khan, Muhammad Nasrullah,Qureshi, Muhammad Saeed,Zahid, Sara,Manan, Abdul,Arooj, Mahwish,Qazi, Mahmood Husain,Chaudhary, Ade Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.9

Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) performs a vital role in the pathogenesis of hematopoietic malignancies. Therefore in recent times, the focus of several studies was on use of FLT3 as a prognostic marker. The present study investigated the molecular characterization and incidence of FLT3 mutations in acute leukemia patients in Pakistan. A total of 55 patients were studied, of which 25 were suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and 30 were suffering from acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The polymerase chain reaction demonstrated FLT3/ITD mutations in 1 (4%) of 25 ALL patients, a male with the L2 subtype. In AML cases the rate was 4 (13.3%) of 30, three males and one female. The AML-M4 subtype was found in three and the AML M2 subtype in the other. In the AML cases, a statistically significant (p=0.009) relationship was found between WBC (109/L) and FLT3/ITD positivity. However, no significant relationship was found with other clinical parameters (p>0.05). In acute myeloid leukemia (AML) $FLT3/ITD^+$ mutation was more prevalent in elderly patients 31-40 age groups, 21-30 and 51-60 age groups respectively. In acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) statistically no significant relationship was found between clinical features and FLT3/ITD positivity (p>0.05). However, in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) $FLT3/ITD^+$ mutation was more commonly found in age groups of 21-30.

Surface sediment geochemistry for understanding the recent sedimentary environment in northwestern Karnataka, south India

        Ishfaq Ahmad Mir,Aijaz A. Bhat,M. Sreeprabash,V. Sridhar,K.V. Maruthi 한국지질과학협의회 2022 Geosciences Journal Vol.26 No.6

Geochemical study of 195 stream sediment samples (in less than 75 μm grain size) distributed in parts of Belgaum, Dharwad, and Uttar Kanada districts (bounded by latitudes from15°15'00'' to 15°30'00'' and longitudes from 74°30'00'' to 74°45'00'') were studied for the major oxide, trace and rare earth element content. The objective of this study is to understand the recent sedimentary environment by establishing the generalized climatic conditions, chemical weathering, sediment sorting and recycling, sediment sources, and the tectonic setting of the study area. Geochemical signatures of the sediments indicate a semi-arid to the moist climate in the study area. Geochemical proxies show that annual rainfall in the study area varies from 378 to 692 mm, higher in the western part compared to that in the eastern side. The chemical index of alteration (67.70–94.01) and chemical index of weathering (76.24–97.37) collectively suggest moderate to high chemical weathering. Studied samples show a wide variation in major oxides and trace elements. Fe2O3, MnO, K2O, P2O5, Rb, Zr, and Sc display a positive correlation with Al2O3 confirming their possible hydraulic fractionation. Zr/Sc vs. Th/Sc plot and correlation between CIA vs. Al2O3 indicate strong sediment recycling and sorting. Bulk geochemistry data suggests the involvement of granite and other felsic rocks, intermediate and mafic rocks as the sources of surface sediments. Our observations are very well matching with the geology of the area. Major and trace element set of discrimination diagrams demarcates the passive margin settings for the studied samples, except for a few samples plotting into an active continental margin tectonic settings.

On Sendov's conjecture about critical points of a polynomial

        Ishfaq Nazir,Mohammad Ibrahim Mir,Irfan Ahmad Wani 강원경기수학회 2021 한국수학논문집 Vol.29 No.4

The derivative of a polynomial $p(z)$ of degree $n$, with respect to point $\alpha$ is defined by $D_{\alpha}p(z)=np(z)+(\alpha-z)p'(z)$. Let $p(z)$ be a polynomial having all its zeros in the unit disk $|z| \leq 1$. The Sendov conjecture asserts that if all the zeros of a polynomial $p(z)$ lie in the closed unit disk, then there must be a zero of $p'(z)$ within unit distance of each zero. In this paper, we obtain certain results concerning the location of the zeros of $D_{\alpha}p(z)$ with respect to a specific zero of $p(z)$ and a stronger result than Sendov conjecture is obtained. Further, a result is obtained for zeros of higher derivatives of polynomials having multiple roots.

The Analgesic, Anti-inflammatory and Calcium Antagonist Potential of Tanacetum artemisioides

        Bukhari, Ishfaq Ali,Gilani, Anwar-Ul Hassan,Shah, Abdul Jabbar,Hussain, Javid,Khan, Rafeeq Alam 대한약학회 2007 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.30 No.3

Several species of the genus Tanacetum are traditionally used in a variety of health conditions including pain, inflammation, respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders. In the current investigation, we evaluated the plant extract of T atemisioides and some of its pure compounds (flavonoids) for analgesic, anti-inflammatory and calcium antagonist effects in various in-vivo and in vitro studies. Using the actetic acid induced writhing test, intraperitoneal (i.p) administration of the plant extract (25-50 mg/kg) and its flavonoid compounds TA-1 and TA-2 (1-5 mg/kg) exhibited significant analgesic activity. The maximum analgesic effect observed with the crude extract of the plant was 71% at 50 mg/kg, while that of compounds TA-1 and TA-2 (5mg/kg i.p)was 75 and 47%, respectively. The plant extract and its pure compounds caused inhibition of formalin induced paw licking in mice predominatly in the second phase of the test. Diclofenac sodium, a standard reference compound, showed a similar effect in these chemical induced pain models. In the carrgeenan induced rat paw edema assay, the plant extract (50-200 mg/kg i.p) demonstrated significant (P<0.01) anti-inflmmatory activity which was comparable to that obtained with diclofenac sodium and indomethacin. In isolated rabbit jejunum preprations the piant extract showed an atropine sensitive dose-dependant (0.10-1.0 mg/mL) spasmogenic activity followed by a spasmolytic effect at the next higher doses (3-5 mg/mL). The crude extract of the plant also inhibited the high K$^+$-induced contractions, indicating a calcium channel blocking (CCB) activity, which was further confirmed when the plant extract caused a right-ward shift in the Ca$^{++}$ concentration response curves in the isolated rabbit jejunum preparations, similar to that seen with verapamil. The flavonoid compounds isolated from the plant were devoid of any activity in the isolated tissue preparations. These results indicate that the plant extract of T. artemisioides possesses analgesic, anti-inflammatory and CCB activities. The flavonoid compounds of the plant may have a role in its observed analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities, while the CCB activity of the plant may be attributed to some other chemical constituents present. Moreover the findings support the traditional reputation of the genus Tanacetum for its therapeutic benefits in pain and inflammatory conditions.

How Effectively Safety Incentives Work? A Randomized Experimental Investigation

Ahmed, Ishfaq,Faheem, Asim Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute 2021 Safety and health at work Vol.12 No.1

Background: Incentive and penalty (I/P) programs are commonly used to increase employees' safety outcomes, but its influence on employees' safety outcomes is under-investigated. Moreover, under developed economies lack safety culture and there is dearth of literature focusing on empirical studies over there [1]. Based on these gaps, this study attempts to see the impact of I/P programs on safety outcomes in a developing country. Methods: The study was carried out in three stages, where Stage I revealed that selected 45 organizations were deficit of safety culture and practices, while only three firms were found good at safety practices. At Stage II, these three firms were divided in two clusters (groups), and were probed further at Stage III. At this stage group, one was manipulated by providing incentives (experimental group) and employees' responses in terms of safety motivation and performance were noticed. Results: It was observed that the experimental group's safety motivation and performance had improved (both for immediate and 1-month later performance). The results were further probed at Phase 3 (after 3 months), where it was found that the benefits of I/P programs were not long lasting and started replenishing. Conclusion: Findings of the study helped researchers conclude that safety incentives have only short-term influence on safety outcomes, while a long-term and permanent solution should be found.

Investigation of dimensional deviation in biodegradable dielectric-based powder-mixed electric discharge machining of Ni-based superalloy

Kashif Ishfaq,Mudassar Rehman,Yanen Wang 대한기계학회 2022 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.36 No.8

Innovations in the manufacturing industries assist to improve machinability of difficult to cut materials, such as nickel superalloys. Critical applications of these materials require improved dimensional accuracy. These requirements justify the use of electric discharge machining (EDM); however, conventional dielectric poses various health concerns, such as breathing issues. Therefore, the potential of powder mixed biodegradable dielectric is comprehensively investigated herein to improve the geometric accuracy of the machined cavity because it is still plagued by overcut/undercut problems. In this work, the performance of four electrode types (ET), namely aluminum, brass, copper, and graphite along with varying powder concentrations (Cp) was deeply examined under canola oil biodegradable dielectric in the context of axial/lateral overcuts (AOC, LOC). The experimentation resulted in minimum AOC (0.279 mm) and LOC (0.276 mm) at [Cp (0.0 g/100 ml), ET1 (Al)], and [Cp (1.0 g/100 ml), ET4 (Cu)]. The composite desirability-based optimized settings including graphite at higher Cp (1.0, 1.5) caused a percent reduction of 9.10 % and 6.89 % for AOC and LOC, respectively.

      • Reducing Routing Overhead of AODV Protocol in Multi-hop Tactical Airborne Networks

Modassir Ishfaq,Muhammad Hasan Wajahat,Hyung Seok Kim 제어로봇시스템학회 2015 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2015 No.10

Routing protocols of Mobile Ad hoc networks have long been considered as a viable solution in tactical networks as they provide relatively more robust communication mechanism. AODV’s capability of saturating the whole network with Route Request messages has been a topic of debate for quite some time and scientists have proposed various mechanisms to overcome this issue. In this paper, authors have proposed and evaluated an optimized version of AODV protocol. Performance of this methodology has been evaluated for its efficient applicability in tactical networks. OP-AODV effectively reduces routing overhead associated with AODV protocol. For evaluation of OP-AODV, authors consider the number of Route Request Messages, average end-to-end delay, route discovery time and routing traffic as vital performance metrics.
