Integrated Model of Power Electronics, Electric Motor, and Gearbox for a Light EV

This study presents a model of a drivetrain for an integrated design of a light electric vehicle (EV). For the drivetrain of each front wheel of the single-person, battery-powered EV tricycle consists of a battery, an inverter, and an outer rotor permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), which is connected to an in-wheel gearbox. The efficiency of the inverter, motor, and gearbox is analyzed over the New European Driving Cycle. To calculate the losses and efficiency of the PMSM, the power electronics in the inverter and gearbox are used. The analytical models provide a fast, but less accurate result, useful for optimization purposes. To accurately predict the efficiency of the PMSM, a finite element model is used. The models are validated by test setups. Correspondingly, a good agreement between the measurements and the calculated results is achieved. A parameter study is performed to investigate the influence of the detailed component parameters (i.e., outer rotor radius, gear ratio, and number of pole pairs and stator slots) on the average efficiency of the drivetrain.

Economic Growth: The Case of Irreversibility of Investment with Bargaining Power of Workers

In this paper, we develop a model of endogenous growth with search frictions in the labor market. We show that the growth rate of the economy may be durably altered in a case of investment irreversibility and bargaining power of workers. Labor market conditions mitigate this rent-seeking effect of workers.

Long-Term Follow-Up Study of Young Adults Treated for Unilateral Complete Cleft Lip, Alveolus, and Palate by a Treatment Protocol Including Two- Stage Palatoplasty: Speech Outcomes

Background No consensus exists on the optimal treatment protocol for orofacial clefts or the optimal timing of cleft palate closure. This study investigated factors influencing speech outcomes after two-stage palate repair in adults with a non-syndromal complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). Methods This was a retrospective analysis of adult patients with a UCLP who underwent two-stage palate closure and were treated at our tertiary cleft centre. Patients ≥17 years of age were invited for a final speech assessment. Their medical history was obtained from their medical files, and speech outcomes were assessed by a speech pathologist during the followup consultation. Results Forty-eight patients were included in the analysis, with a mean age of 21 years (standard deviation, 3.4 years). Their mean age at the time of hard and soft palate closure was 3 years and 8.0 months, respectively. In 40% of the patients, a pharyngoplasty was performed. On a 5-point intelligibility scale, 84.4% received a score of 1 or 2; meaning that their speech was intelligible. We observed a significant correlation between intelligibility scores and the incidence of articulation errors (P<0.001). In total, 36% showed mild to moderate hypernasality during the speech assessment, and 11%–17% of the patients exhibited increased nasalance scores, assessed through nasometry. Conclusions The present study describes long-term speech outcomes after two-stage palatoplasty with hard palate closure at a mean age of 3 years old. We observed moderate long-term intelligibility scores, a relatively high incidence of persistent hypernasality, and a high pharyngoplasty incidence.

The under-translation and self-censorship in English-Chinese subtitling

When the strong and sensitive elements in the source text are toned down or downgraded, the translating effect of under-translation is achieved. In subtitling translation, any translating strategy leading to under-translation is considered as the more insensible and imperceptible form of linguistic manipulation. Based on textual analyses to English-Chinese subtitles of selected films, this study finds out that sensitive elements in the original dialogues being modified over under-translation are mostly related to sexual sensitive elements, profanes, and swearing words and most observed strategies employed are using Chinese idiomatic expressions, register moving, and euphemism. It is arguably possible that the motivation behind under-translation is translator’s self-censorship, drawing on the paradox Chinese translators are facing: rigorous official censoring process, the absence of movie content classification systems, and Chinese audiences’ growing awareness of possible (self)censorship. Comparing with other effects of translation, under-translation invisibly intervenes Chinese film viewers’ watching experience and reinforces the power imbalance between them and institutional and individual censors.

Case Studies of Chiropractic Care of Sports-Related Concussion in Two Adolescent Taekwondo Athletes

The purpose of this research was to present a case study in which two adolescent Taekwondo athletes received chiropractic care for the resolution of post-concussion headaches, neck pain, and dizziness. Both athletes sustained head injuries while participating in activities that happened less than 10 days prior to their first visit to a sports chiropractor. The patients were treated over three- and eight-week periods, respectively. The plan of management included rest and removal from sport, spinal manipulation, vibration soft-tissue therapy, acupuncture, patient education, home exercises, and advice on increasing dietary carbohydrates. At discharge, the first athlete fully re-turned to Taekwondo competition, whereas the second athlete decided for personal reasons to retire from Taekwondo despite being cleared to practice. The chiropractic treatments provided in this case study may to be an option to Taekwondo athletes who sustain in-competition sports-related concussion.

Large Scale Finite Element Thermal Analysis of the Bolts of a French PWR Core Internal Baffle Structure

The internal core baffle structure of a French Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) consists of a collection of baffles and formers that are attached to the barrel. The connections are done thanks to a large number of bolts (about 1500). After inspection, some of the bolts have been found cracked. This has been attributed to the Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking (IASCC). The Electricité De France (EDF) has set up a research program to gain better knowledge of the temperature distribution, which may affect the bolts and the whole structure. The temperature distribution in the structure was calculated thanks to the thermal code SYRTHES that used a finite element approach. The heat transfer between the by-pass flow inside the cavities of the core baffle and the structure was accounted for thanks to a strong thermal coupling between the thermal code SYRTHES and the CFD code named Code_Saturne. The results for the CP0 plant design show that both the high temperature and strong temperature gradients could potentially induce mechanical stresses. The CPY design, where each bolt is individually cooled, had led to a reduction of temperatures inside the structures. A new parallel version of SYRTHES, for calculations on very large meshes and based on MPI, has been developed. A demonstration test on the complete structure that has led to about 1.1 billion linear tetraedra has been calculated on 2048 processors of the EDF Blue Gene computer.

The Use of Gui-Pi-Tang in Small Animals with Immune-Mediated Blood Disorders

Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is one of the most common causes of anemia in small animals and immune-mediate thrombocytopenia (IMT) is also an immune mediated disease that affects small animals. The initial treatment for IMHA and IMT is medical suppression of the immune system with glucocorticoids and other immunosuppressive drugs. However, even with appropriate treatments, some animals are not responsive to the treatment and may need further immunosuppressive therapies or some alternative medicines. An eight-year-old spayed female Siamese cat with IMHA and an eight-year-old castrated male King Charles Spaniel dog with IMT were referred to the traditional medical service of the veterinary medical center. Both animals were unresponsive to steroids or other immunosuppressive treatments. Gui-Pi-Tang, one of the traditional herbal medicines, was administered to the animals. After 1-month of Gui-Pi-Tang administration, the packed cell volume (PCV) of the cat and platelets count of the dog had showed remarkable improvement. After four months of follow up in the cat, and 18 months of follow up in the dog, the improved PCV and platelet counts of the animals were maintained normally. Therefore, Gui-Pi-Tang might be considered as an alternative treatment in small animals with immune-mediated blood disorders.

Dubbing from English into Chinese: A case study on translation of spoken language

Researches on how spoken English is dubbed into other languages in films and TV series have been on the rise over the past 30 years. But they are concerned mainly with the translation of English into European languages and there is scarce mention of any study of Chinese dubbing of spoken English. In this context, this paper investigates how spoken English is dubbed into Chinese with one American film The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and one British film Atonement (2007). By analyzing the dubbed scripts against the scripts of original films, it is found that the dubbed scripts fall short of preserving the overall original orality, for lacking the major spoken features that should be present in the target texts, though one feature, i.e., “the use of incomplete sentences”, is overrepresented. Further studies are needed.

Evaluation of endoscopically obtained duodenal biopsy samples from cats and dogs in an adapter-modified Ussing chamber

This study was conducted to evaluate an adapter-modifiedUssing chamber for assessment of transport physiology inendoscopically obtained duodenal biopsies from healthy catsand dogs, as well as dogs with chronic enteropathies. 17duodenal biopsies from five cats and 51 duodenal biopsiesfrom 13 dogs were obtained. Samples were transferred intoan adapter-modified Ussing chamber and sequentiallyexposed to various absorbagogues and secretagogues. Overall, 78.6% of duodenal samples obtained from catsresponded to at least one compound. In duodenal biopsiesobtained from dogs, the rate of overall response ranged from87.5% (healthy individuals; n = 8), to 63.6% (animalsexhibiting clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease andhistopathological unremarkable duodenum; n = 15), and32.1% (animals exhibiting clinical signs of gastrointestinaldiseases and moderate to severe histopathological lesions; n =28). Detailed information regarding the magnitude andduration of the response are provided. The adapter-modifiedUssing chamber enables investigation of the absorptive andsecretory capacity of endoscopically obtained duodenalbiopsies from cats and dogs and has the potential to become avaluable research tool. The response of samples was correlated with histopathological findings.
