        Differentiation Capacity of Monocyte-Derived Multipotential Cells on Nanocomposite Poly(e-caprolactone)-Based Thin Films

        BACKGROUND: Lonocyte-derived multipotential cells (MOMCs) include progenitors capable of differentiation into multiple cell lineages and thus represent an ideal autologous transplantable cell source for regenerative medicine. In this study, we cultured MOMCs, generated from mononuclear cells of peripheral blood, on the surface of nanocomposite thin films. METHODS: For this purpose, nanocomposite Poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL)-based thin films containing either 2.5 wt% silica nanotubes (SiO2ntbs) or strontium hydroxyapatite nanorods (SrHAnrds), were prepared using the spin-coating method. The induced differentiation capacity of MOMCs, towards bone and endothelium, was estimated using flow cytometry, real-time polymerase chain reaction, scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy after cells’ genetic modification using the Sleeping Beauty Transposon System aiming their observation onto the scaffolds. Moreover, Wharton’s Jelly Mesenchymal Stromal Cells were cultivated as a control cell line, while Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells were used to strengthen and accelerate the differentiation procedure in semi-permeable culture systems. Finally, the cytotoxicity of the studied materials was checked with MTT assay. RESULTS: The highest differentiation capacity of MOMCs was observed on PCL/SiO2ntbs 2.5 wt% nanocomposite film, as they progressively lost their native markers and gained endothelial lineage, in both protein and transcriptional level. In addition, the presence of SrHAnrds in the PCL matrix triggered processes related to osteoblast bone formation. CONCLUSION: To conclude, the differentiation of MOMCs was selectively guided by incorporating SiO2ntbs or SrHAnrds into a polymeric matrix, for the first time.

        Promising nature-based activated carbon derived from flowers of Borassus flabellifer for supercapacitor applications

        Recently, activated carbon derived from diferent agricultural by-products or bio-waste is receiving a great deal of attention due to its low or zero cost and environmental friendliness. In this work, fowers obtained from Borassus fabellifer (BFL) is used as a carbon source and potassium hydroxide (KOH) as activation precursor to produce activated carbon with high specifc surface area and predominant micropore. The obtained carbon material was activated at 650 °C. The as-prepared sample had a specifc surface area of 930.3 m2 /g and pore size distribution of 1.96 nm. The carbon material exhibited high electrochemical performance with a specifc capacitance of 247 F/g at 0.5 A/g in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte and an excellent cycling stability of 94% after 2500 cycles. A specifc energy of 101.1 Wh/kg and a specifc power of 4500 kW/kg were obtained. Based on the electrochemical properties exhibited by BFL, it could be used as an excellent electrode material for supercapacitor applications.

        From Alms to Arms: The Almajiri Phenomenon and Internal Security in Northern Nigeria

        State and multinational efforts aimed at containing jihadist terrorismin northern Nigeria have only yielded modest results despite the repressivenature of these efforts. The ranks of the foot soldiers of Boko Haram and Ansarufundamentalist Islamic sects continue to swell even in the face of the ferociousonslaught on their membership by state troops. In contrast to mainstream analysesthat highlight the salience of radical Islamism in coming to terms with insurgentproliferation, this article demonstrates that jihadist insurgency in northern Nigeriais better understood as a consequence of youth bulge syndrome, particularly thelow-cost availability of foot soldiers from the almajiri demographic cohort. Abandoned by parents and the state, the itinerant Quranic pupils resort to street,begging for alms and survival. And “street life” exposes the urchins to abuse,criminalization and subsequent mobilization for violent causes including terrorism. It is argued that until the practices of rampant child abuse and state neglect of thealmajirai and other vulnerable groups are addressed through better education,employment opportunities and poverty reduction, northern Nigeria is likely toremain a breeding ground of violent conflicts.

      • 차세대 지능망에서 개인통신 서비스를 위한 호 설정 시간 분석

        개인통신서비스는 언제, 어디서나 누구와도 통신을 보장하는 서비스이다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 개인통신서비스를 위한 망의 기반구조를 차세대 지능망으로 구현을 하였으며 호 설정을 위한 정보흐름을 보였다. 개인통신서비스는 기존의 서비스망에 비하여 구성이 복잡하기 때문에 성능에 대한 목표치를 어떻게 두느냐가 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 호 설정 시간을 망 성능의 중요한 요소로 보고 호 발신과 호 착신의 두 가지 경우에 대하여 SSP의 관점에서 호 설정 시간을 계산해보았다. 본 논문의 결과는 실제로 망을 구성할 때 각 콤포넌트에 따른 성능에 대한 목표치를 설정할 때 참고할수 있을 것이다.

      • Odd-Even sorting network을 사용한 non-blocking ATM switch

        광대역 통신망의 발달로 ATM switch의 중요성은 점차 증가되고 있으며 이에 대한 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. ATM switch는 크게 blocking, non-blocking으로 분류된다. 이 중 우리가 관심을 갖는 non-blocking switch는 내부에 buffer를 두거나 Sort-Banyan network을 사용해서 구현된다. 본 논문에서는 Odd-Even Sort를 Sort-Banyan network의 전위 network으로 갖는 ATM switch를 제안한다. 이러한 switch는 기존의 Sort-Banyan switch에 비해서 비교기의 숫자를 감소시킬 수 있어 VLSI구현시 큰 장점을 갖는다.

        Evaluation of 131I (monoiodide) BSP for Clinical Studies

        "In 1925 Rosenthal and White introduced a bromosulfophthalein (BSP) dye retention test as a sensitive indicator of liver function. Even now it is regared as one of the most sensitive agents for the detection of non-icteric liver disease (liver cirrhosis, early stage of acute-hepatitis and hepatic tumor). BSP accumulates in the liver cells, conjugates with glutathione and is excreted into the bile. Therefore, a disorder in its excretion is due to a disturbance of one of these processes. Since bilirubin and BSP compete for uptake by the liver and increased serum bilirubin interferes with the colorimetric determination of BSP, it has been considered that BSP test is inappropriate for the differential diagnosis of jaundice conditions. It has been generally said that when jaundice is present, the BSP test is useless and should not be performed. In 1955, Taplin et al. labeled rose bengal, a dye similarly metabolized in the liver as BSP, with 131I and measured the hepatic excretion of this dye by external monitoring. Laster, Blahd et al. applied this method to the determination of the peripheral pool, succeeding in the diagnosis of chronic and subacute hepatic diseases without colorimetry. In 1968, Yamada, Taplin et al. suggested the possibility of differentiating so-called medical jaundice from surgical jaundice by scanning the subjects during 24 to 48 hours following intravenous injection of 131I-labeled rose bengal. As mentioned before, many authorities hold the opinion that BSP is not proper for the differential diagnosis of jaundice states. Some have tried to diagnose biliary tract obstruction by a malignant tumor by measuring BSP excretion into duodenal fluid and others by quantitating changes in serum levels of conjugated and free BSP. Furthermore, Burton et al. reported that in patients with extrahepatic obstructive jaundice, BSP retention was observed for 24 days after its administration. From a consideration of all these finding we came to a conclusion that the differential diagnosis of various jaundice states, (medical, surgical and constitutional) is possible by sequential scanning with radioisotope-labeled BSP, as with rose bengal, in accordance with procedures described by Yamada, Taplin et al. The evidence suggested that labeled BSP might make a more important contribution than rose bengal. "

        Image Re-branding in a Fragile State: The Case of Nigeria

        In today’s globalized world, nations are increasingly concerned about how they are perceived by their publics, often carefully planning and executing policies to maintain a positive identity or shed a negative image. While some countries are able to execute nation branding, others are not. Using the Nigerian experience as a case study, this article shows how the character of a state can undermine its capacity for successful nation branding. We argue that countries are judged not just by what they say but also by what they do, and that inherent contradictions such as sectarian violence, ethnic tension, and corruption underline Nigeria’s underdevelopment and its reputation at home and abroad. We assess this trajectory in the context of state fragility and “prebendalization” politics in a country with a powerful colonial legacy, and suggest a duality of order and disorder involving formal and informal structures of governance that impinge significantly on re-branding efforts.

      • B-ISDN을 위한 트랜스포트 프로토콜에 대한 연구

        종래의 트랜스포트 프로토콜은 네트워크 계층에서 제공되는 서비스를 바탕으로 상위 계층에게 신뢰성 있고, 효율적인 서비스 제공을 목적으로 하였다. 하지만 B-ISDN은 다양한 형태의 서비스를 고속으로 사용자에게 제공하기 위해 설계되고 있다. 이러한 B-ISDN을 서브넷으로 사용하고, 다양한 서비스 요구를 만족시키기 위해서는 B-ISDN을 위한 트랜스포트 프로토콜이 필수적이다. 본 논문에서는 서비스 특성에 따라 트랜스포트 서비스를 분류 해보고 향후 B-ISDN 트랜스포트 프로토콜이 가져야하는 기능에 대해 제안하고자 한다.
