Boundary and Finite-size Effects in the Competition between Indirect Magnetic Exchange and Kondo Screening

Irakli Titvinidze,Michael Potthoff 한국물리학회 2013 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.62 No.10

A system of conduction electrons can mediate an indirect magnetic exchange between magnetic impurites. The nonlocal exchange typically competes with the local Kondo screening of the impurity magnetic moments. In case of magnetic adatoms on non-magnetic surfaces this competition is expected to be affected by different confinement effects. Here we study this situation in the regime of intermediate hybridization strengths by means of real-space dynamical mean-field theory for a one-dimensional two-impurity Anderson model. Depending on the presence of a boundary and depending on the system size, a crossover between nonlocal and local singlet formation is observed in corresponding magnetic susceptibilities. The crossover is driven by the strong sensitivity of the Kondo temperature on the local density of states.

Metastatic leiomyosarcoma of the intrapancreatic bile duct

        Iraklis Perysinakis,Aggeliki Katopodi,Spyridon Avlonitis,Despoina Georgiadou,Theodosia Choreftaki,George Christopoulos,Ilias Margaris 대한외과학회 2013 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.84 No.1

We report the case of a patient with a history of surgically treated pulmonary leiomyosarcoma, presenting with recurrent acute cholangitis and metastatic leiomyosarcoma of the common bile duct. Preoperative examinations had revealed a high grade malignant neoplasm and bilateral lung metastases. The patient underwent pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy and survived for 5.5 years after the first diagnosis.

Investigation of the Protective Effect of Kefir against Isoproterenol Induced Myocardial Infarctionin Rats

        Handan Mert,Hikmet Yılmaz,Kıvanc Irak,Serkan Yıldırım,Nihat Mert 한국축산식품학회 2018 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.38 No.2

Thisstudy aims to investigate the protective effects of kefir against myocardial infarction induced by isoproterenol (ISO). The rats were randomly divided into 4 groups, each group consisting of 8 rats. The control group, the kefir group (5 mL/kg/d kefir administered to rats as intra-gastric gavage for 60 d), the ISO group (100 mg/kg ISO was administered to rats, s.c. on 61. and 62. d), and kefir+ISO group (5 mL/kg/d kefir was administered to rats intra gastric gavage for 60 days prior to ISO, 100 mg/kg in twodoses on day 61 and 62). 12 h after the last ISO dose, all rats were decapitated and their blood samples were collected. Cardiac tissue was reserved for histopathological examination. creatine kinase (CK), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), triglycerides, total cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL) and glucose were measured by autoanalyzer, whole blood malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) and plasma advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) levels were measured spectrophotometrically. It was determined that in the group of kefir+ISO, the levels of AST (p

Biocompatible Ti3Au–Ag/Cu thin film coatings with enhanced hardness and antimicrobial functionality

        Cecil Cherian Lukose,Ioannis Anestopoulos,Iraklis‑Stavros Panagiotidis,Guillaume Zoppi,Anna M. Black,Lynn G. Dover,Leon Bowen,Ángel Serrano‑Aroca,Terence Xiaoteng Liu,Lorenzo Mendola,Davide Morrone,Mi 한국생체재료학회 2023 생체재료학회지 Vol.27 No.00

Background Biofilm formation on medical device surfaces is a persistent problem that shelters bacteria and encourages infections and implant rejection. One promising approach to tackle this problem is to coat the medical device with an antimicrobial material. In this work, for the first time, we impart antimicrobial functionality to Ti3Au intermetallic alloy thin film coatings, while maintaining their superior mechanical hardness and biocompatibility. Methods A mosaic Ti sputtering target is developed to dope controlled amounts of antimicrobial elements of Ag and Cu into a Ti3Au coating matrix by precise control of individual target power levels. The resulting Ti3Au- Ag/Cu thin film coatings are then systematically characterised for their structural, chemical, morphological, mechanical, corrosion, biocompatibility-cytotoxicity and antimicrobial properties. Results X-ray diffraction patterns reveal the formation of a super hard β-Ti3Au phase, but the thin films undergo a transition in crystal orientation from (200) to (211) with increasing Ag concentration, whereas introduction of Cu brings no observable changes in crystal orientation. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy analysis show the polyhedral shape of the Ti3Au crystal but agglomeration of Ag particles between crystal grains begins at 1.2 at% Ag and develops into large granules with increasing Ag concentration up to 4.1 at%. The smallest doping concentration of 0.2 at% Ag raises the hardness of the thin film to 14.7 GPa, a 360% improvement compared to the ∼4 GPa hardness of the standard Ti6Al4V base alloy. On the other hand, addition of Cu brings a 315—330% improvement in mechanical hardness of films throughout the entire concentration range of 0.5—7.1 at%. The thin films also show good electrochemical corrosion resistance and a > tenfold reduction in wear rate compared to Ti6Al4V alloy. All thin film samples exhibit very safe cytotoxic profiles towards L929 mouse fibroblast cells when analysed with Alamar blue assay, with ion leaching concentrations lower than 0.2 ppm for Ag and 0.08 ppm for Cu and conductivity tests reveal the positive effect of increased conductivity on myogenic differentiation. Antimicrobial tests show a drastic reduction in microbial survival over a short test period of < 20 min for Ti3Au films doped with Ag or Cu concentrations as low as 0.2—0.5 at%. Conclusion Therefore, according to these results, this work presents a new antimicrobial Ti3Au- Ag/Cu coating material with excellent mechanical performance with the potential to develop wear resistant medical implant devices with resistance to biofilm formation and bacterial infection.

A Simultaneous Analytical Method for Duplex Identification of Porcine and Horse in the Meat Products by EvaGreen based Real-time PCR

        Ergun Sakalar,Seyma Özçirak Ergün,Emine Akar 한국축산식품학회 2015 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.35 No.3

A duplex real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based assay for the detection of porcine and horse meat in sausages was designed by using EvaGreen fluorescent dye. Primers were selected from mitochondrial 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA genes which are powerful regions for identification of horse and porcine meat. DNA from reference samples and industrial products was successfully extracted using the GIDAGEN® Multi-Fast DNA Isolation Kit. Genomes were identified based on their specific melting peaks (Mp) which are 82.5°C and 78°C for horse and porcine, respectively. The assay used in this study allowed the detection of as little as 0.0001% level of horse meat and 0.001% level of porcine meat in the experimental admixtures. These findings indicate that EvaGreen based duplex real- time PCR is a potentially sensitive, reliable, rapid and accurate assay for the detection of meat species adulterated with porcine and horse meats.
