Purpose: This study investigated the possible radioprotective effect of Costus afer extract (CAE) on hematological and histopathological parameters of mice. Materials and Methods: Fifty-four male mice with mass between 37–43 g, 11–13 weeks old were used for this study. We divided the mice into six different groups containing nine animals, which were then further sub-divided into irradiated groups and un-irradiated groups. Animals received 250 mg/kg body weight extract of CAE by oral gavage for 6 days in addition to feeding and water ad libitum. Animals in the irradiated group were exposed to radiation at the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology, Grey’s Hospital using a linear accelerator. Blood samples were collected at 48-hour post-irradiation for the hematology test followed by histopathology examination of kidney and liver. Results: Our findings revealed that 3 Gy and 6 Gy dose of X-ray radiation caused a significant reduction in the white blood cell, packed cell volume, hemoglobin, neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, and platelet counts compared with the control group. However, the administration of CAE before irradiation significantly increased the mentioned parameters. There was no increase in red blood cell and monocyte among treated groups compared with the control. Histopathological changes in the kidney and liver sections revealed that no visible lesion in the pretreated mice. Hepatocytes seem to be within normal histological limits. Conclusions: This study concludes that CAE offered some protection against radiation-induced hematological alterations, but there was no significant improvement in the histopathological parameters. Thus, further studies are needed to validate its radioprotective effect on histopathological variables.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FAILED ELECTION IN 1993 FOR NIGERIA’S DEMOCRATIC DEVELOPMENT
Idowu Johnson 한국외국어대학교 아프리카연구소 2017 Asian Journal of African Studies Vol.- No.42
Election plays a vital role in a system of representative democracy. In Nigeria, the history of elections has been a chequered one. From 1964, 1979 to 1983 elections in Nigeria, experience shows that the country failed to conduct credible elections which will move the country to a higher rung on the democratization ladder. Thus, successive elections in Nigeria lacked the essential ingredients of democratic electoral processes. However, the June 12 1993 Presidential election remains a watershed in the history of elections in the country. The election was adjudged the most peaceful, and the freest in Nigeria’s post-independence political history. The results of the election were not released by the military government with no justifiable reason. All domestic pressures to make the military allow the winner, M.K.O. Abiola assumed presidential office proved abortive. The 1993 presidential election explains the important roles of individuals, civil society organizations, opposition parties, and foreign countries in terminating authoritarian regime in Nigeria. The paper posits that the June 12 1993 presidential election was very significant for three obvious reasons. First, it allowed Nigeria to slightly conform to the global norm of democracy. Secondly, Nigeria became an encouragement for other countries in Africa in returning to democratic rule. Thirdly, Nigerians were more enlightened to reject any government coming to power through military coup. Arising from the foregoing, the paper concludes with some recommendations on how to consolidate democracy in Nigeria.
POLITICAL PARTIES AND CONFLICT MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA’S FOURTH REPUBLIC
Idowu Johnson 한국외국어대학교 아프리카연구소 2020 Asian Journal of African Studies Vol.- No.49
A critical assessment of the performance of Nigerian political parties since 1999 reveals that they actually raise more questions than answers to the problems of the country, especially the challenge of maintaining political stability as a result of their inability to manage conflicts as they arise in the polity. This scenario, no doubt, threatens the future stability and representativeness of contemporary democratic system in Nigeria. The inherent weaknesses of political parties to enforce rule-based politics both within the party and the larger governance context therefore lends credence to the need for alternative form of conflict management since, as it were, sporadic hostilities in Nigerian politics seem to be one of the factors responsible for the waning interest in politics. This is where conflict management styles become imperative. This paper utilized Rahim’s meta model of handling inter-personal conflict useful in interpreting political party conflicts in Nigeria and how to enhance political stability through better management practices. The paper concludes by adopting Rahim’s integrating style as the best mechanism worthwhile in managing intra and inter-party conflicts in Nigeria for enhanced virile party politicking contingent on the fact that it is an important conflict-prevention, conflict resolution and confidence-building mechanism for bringing about cross-party co-operation for the consolidation and sustainability of democracy and development. This has obvious implications for policy makers and managers of our electoral process.
Giant Solitary Anterior Cervical Canal Neurofibroma: Case Report and Surgical Technique
Olufemi Emmanuel Idowu,Kazeem M. Atobatele,Sunday O. Soyemi 대한척추외과학회 2015 Asian Spine Journal Vol.9 No.4
Giant solitary anterior cervical canal neurofibroma (GSACCN) is rarely reported in the literature. When the large lesion is ventrally located to the spinal cord, an anterolateral approach may not be ideal due to various technical challenges. In this report, we describe a case of intradural extramedullary GSACCN located at the cervical region extending from the axis to the sixth cervical vertebrae. Here we also describe a posterior technique successfully used to resect the tumour. Therefore, the posterior approach by en bloc decompressive laminectomy and laminoplasty might be used to adequately treat the lesion.
Doppler sonography of perifibroid and intrafibroid arteries of uterine leiomyomas
( Bukunmi Michael Idowu ),( Bolanle Olubunmi Ibitoye ) 대한산부인과학회 2018 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.61 No.3
Objective To sonographically evaluate the dominant fibroid nodule vascularity and flow velocity pattern of perifibroid and intrafibroid arteries. Methods We recruited 140 women with uterine fibroids. Their uteri were scanned to determine the vascularity of fibroid nodules and the Doppler indices of the fibroid arteries. Results The median volume of the dominant leiomyoma nodule was 133 ㎤ (range=1.5-2,575 ㎤). Eighty-three subjects (59.3%) had a dominant leiomyoma nodule volume of ≤200.0 ㎤ while the volume of the dominant leiomyoma nodule was >200.0 ㎤ in 57 (40.7%) subjects. The dominant fibroid nodule was vascular in 137 (97.9%) subjects and avascular in 3 (2.1%). All the perifibroid artery indices (except the end-diastolic velocity [EDV] and diastolic average ratio [DAR]) are significantly higher than those of the intrafibroid artery. The mean Doppler indices of perifibroid vs. intrafibroid arteries as follows: peak systolic velocity (PSV; 52.1 vs. 45.4 cm/s); EDV (21.1 vs. 22.4 cm/s); time-averaged maximum velocity (TAMX; 31.5 vs. 30.4 cm/s); time-averaged mean velocity (Tmean; 14.3 vs. 13.8 cm/s); pulsatility index (PI; 1.1 vs. 0.8); resistive index (RI; 0.6 vs. 0.5); systolic-diastolic ratio (SDR; 2.7 vs. 2.1); impedance index (ImI; 2.7 vs. 2.1); and DAR (0.66 vs. 0.74); P<0.001 for all indices. Conclusion The predominant pattern of fibroid vascularity is peripheral vascularity and the perifibroid artery indices (except EDV and DAR) are significantly higher than those of the intrafibroid artery. Recurrent fibroids in women with previous myomectomy had significantly higher intrafibroid PI, RI, SDR, and ImI than those without previous myomectomy.
A New IoT Architecture for a Sustainable IoT Adoption into the Society
Lukman Lamid Idowu(루크만라미드이도우),Soo-Hyun Park(박수현),In-Kyu Kim(김인규) 대한전자공학회 2016 대한전자공학회 학술대회 Vol.2016 No.6
Internet of Things is currently changing the world, its applications cut across all human endeavors. The challenges are: how can Internet of Things become a successful and sustainable technology in the nearest future just like its mother the "internet" and any other successful technologies? How can IoT successfully be an integral part of our daily lives in a sustainable manner? This paper proposes new IoT architecture with design styles at each layer of the architecture. The architecture is proposed with the aim to facilitate sustainable adoption of IoT applications in our society. It looks more into bridging the gap between IoT demands and supplies by connecting public and business values of IoT on one hand and technologies and applications of IoT on the other hand. Recommending architecture design styles at each layer will ensure rapid development and reuse of IoT solutions and the platform layer where IoT is offered as service will encourage more access to and development of IoT applications and services. It takes care of security and privacy issues at every layer of the architecture. The main motivation of this paper is to propose a new architecture and architectural design styles to ensure increased and sustainable adoption, rapid development and reuse of IoT systems and applications.
