        Prosody, Syntax, and Discourse

        Hyuanh Ahn(안현아) 한국언어학회 2018 언어 Vol.43 No.1

This paper aims to examine the recent proposal that a syntactic/semantic ambiguity of a sentence like “Cengyenika twulyewun ka pwayo” (Cengyeni must be scared vs. scary) can be prosodically disambiguated. Ahn (2017) argued that the size of a prosodic break between the NP (Cengyenika) and the VP (twulyewun ka pwayo) can influence listeners’ interpretation of the sentence. Her findings, however, were based on an experiment that had the interpretations and discourse structures confounded and did not consider the full scale of Korean prosody. The present study used a production task to probe the three-way relationship between the structure of the discourse, the thematic role interpretation of the overt NP, and prosodic features. The results indicate that the prosodic disambiguation of the syntactic/semantic ambiguity is viable, albeit not via the mere difference of the size of prosodic junctures, unlike what was argued by Ahn (2017). The results are discussed in terms of how discourse structures can mediate the relationship between syntax and prosody and how the three-way relationship fits in with exemplar-based models of language processing.
